Chương 4: 4
"It's kind of sad, don't you think?" I said.
"Excuse me?"
"The world wishes to evolve faster, become greater. People fight to the extreme so long as their beliefs pushes them towards it. But at what cost? The lives of the innocent, poor and struggling? The environment that was once enough to carry the generations of people and animals? You can never understand the human mind. You may gain a a small understanding of the way the general populace behaves, but never really be able to fully delve into it. I think that we won't live to see the next 3 or 4 decades."
"Aren't there any efforts done to fix what you've said?"
"Efforts? Yes, there are. But the scale of destruction is already to large for their miniscule attempts. At most, they may be able to at least prolong it, of course, if there are also more who are willing to help, that would increase. Sadly, destruction also seems to increase."
I looked at the field in front of me, it was quiet, save for a few birds chirping on the ground. I sighed slightly before continuing.
"We blame others for something we ourselves seemed to have also forgotten to act on. Take me for example, I have a great dislike for the current situation in our country, but as someone who is viewed as too young to know anything, I can never do much despite my wish to do so. And at the same time, I am also too lazy to make the effort. I think they call it the 'bystander effect', in a large group of people, they tend to avoid helping with the thought that since there are so many others, what's the point of doing so? They believe that someone else within the population would do something, which leads to nothing being done.
Humans, nowadays, have higher innate selfishness. They would rather choose something for their own benefit rather than for the whole community. They would choose to sacrifice others for their own greed. Even if it's from the smallest of things. Remember, everything that starts out small become larger as time passes.
I wish I was more of an active personality, someone that would act more for the betterment of society. My generation's people want to change the system and fix it. But, I fear that once they've reached the age that they're able to do so, they long lost the desire. As once sees a situation that slowly goes from bad to worse, the desire to also amend it diminishes. They slowly lose hope that the situation can be changed, that it can be fixed. And that's what I find as something stupid now.
I used to think the same, but a wise classmate of mine once said: You shouldn't lose hope in our country, because if you do, people that have the ability to change it would lessen. That would mean our chances of actually making that change would also decrease. We're the next people to cone into society, if we give up immediately, aren't we just pushing our place into an even bigger pit?
I for one, realized my own defects after that. Because at the end of the day, he's right. If everyone gives up on changing the world, then we would all be dooming ourselves. And I believe that one day, when he stands on the platform that he's always believed could change our country, many would support him. I'm sure I will." I chuckled to myself. I knew I really would. Remembering all he's done so far, I was lucky that I met him. My train of thought was interrupted when the person next to me spoke again.
"Then why say all the negative stuff at first? Wouldn't it be better to say the last part instead to convince me? Why did you even talk to me in the first place? We don't know each other."
I shook my head at the question. Standing up from the bench, I dusted off nonexistent dust and turned to face the person.
"I'll leave that up to you. I think you'd realize everything I meant one day. If you don't, that's ok, if you do, that's great. But, to fully understand oneself, contemplation from time to time is quite good. I hear it's good for the mind." I started walking away, leaving the pondering individual.

Kace_K_ The classmate advice is true though. It might not be exact since it's been a few weeks since I heard it. And it was also in our mother tongue, so I guess mine was a very rough translation.
