"Am I a third person?" Rie turns to Kiyohira beside her, slightly leaning on him and raising her chin toward him. He puts his arm around her waist to support her. She's doing her best to stop her body from trembling in fear, but Kiyohira can feel it. Tensed and sweaty, Rie smiles at him. "Kiyohira, when did you fall for me?"
He didn't expect that she would ask that question. When did he fall for her? All the moments between them have been intense and heart shaking. When did his heart move for the first time?
"The moment I heard you cursing my father and my stepmother at their funeral." His voice is neither low nor high. Rie gapes at him dumbly. Chisa also furrows her brows. The guests don't know what to make of it. Both husband and wife are abnormal. Takeshi rubs his forehead and walks to the side. His brother couldn't think of a more romantic moment to speak on the day of the wedding. Seriously who talks about a funeral at the wedding? Kamiyama Kiyohira does.
But Kiyohira is being honest. That was the first time. He had never seen a daring woman like her. She said what was in her mind. There was no doubt that she was wronged. She didn't have fear. She complained to the people who owed her. Though she did infuriate him that day, he is glad that her curse was pretty ineffective. He is Kamiyama Shintaro's son after all.
"That was before the engagement." Rie maintains her calm with difficulty. "I guess that this idiot man still got engaged to you. Still, I will let you have your way to offer some peace for your wronged heart. I am the third person. Your fiance abandoned you and came to me. By the way, if you were capable of moving his heart, he wouldn't have looked for the third person."
Chisa releases a breath, looking at her with a dangerous glint in her eyes. Rie is shamelessly accepting her blames, but turning it around in a way that she's the one who is affected. Now, people are looking at them both, thinking there must be a reason if Kiyohira left her for Rie. Who would leave Chisa if there was no flaw in her? She's still an abandoned woman.
"Rie Chan, you are right. Men easily fall for other women. The loser is the woman who loves him genuinely." Chisa smiles at her contemptuously. "I heard that you lost your child in that accident when he was still engaged to me. I pray that something like that does not happen to you again."
Kiyohira and Rie didn't think that she would mention it blatantly on their wedding. Rie's body turns cold as the memories from that night resurface in her mind. Seeing her face turn ghastly pale, he supports her, helping her stay still. Rie clenches her teeth to not give in to her fears. He looks at Chisa with a dark gaze, ready to burn her alive right at that moment. If Rie hasn't been leaning on him for support, he would have shown her hell right away.
"Hashimoto Chisa."
Seeing the promises that he made to her when their eyes meet, Chisa smirks at him. There is no reason to pretend. She knows that her facade is long broken in front of him. He will never look at her the same.
"Once again, I congratulate you for the union of your love. May you find happiness in your future."
She walks out of the wedding hall proudly, excited after seeing Rie's reaction. His little toy is not completely gone. There is still some hope. She will play with both of them gladly and see what they can do. It's a declaration of war.
After she is gone, Rie closes her eyes. She fists her hands. Her father rushes to her. "This is not good. We have to take her out of here."
Kiyohira ignores the eyes of everyone and carries her out of the place. Her father also gets on the car. Her father injects her with medication. Rie falls into a deeper sleep. Her breathing and temperature become even.
"Nobody knew about the loss of the child other than us." Her father stares at Kiyohira, "Is that the woman who hurt my daughter?"
Kiyohira doesn't answer him. He watches Rie's face. There are creases on her forehead. He smoothens them out one by one. "Will she ever get over this?"
Her father sighs tiredly. "Only if she wants to."
Only if she wants to. When one is too used to suffering, they won't hold the light even if they are offered. The last two years without memories cannot take away 26 years of solitude and pain. She has been through too much. What does she want to do now? What should he do to offer peace to her heart? She's his priority. Nothing else matters when it comes to her.
The young girl is around eight. She has a big smile on her face. Her clothes aren't dirty. She has chubby cheeks and clean skin. The girl is cheerful and bright, untouched by what is going to happen to her in a few days.
"Why I am seeing you?"
It's my house. I can't call it my house anymore. I am not a Takeuchi.
The girl tilts her head. "Why do you think?"
Kamiyama Hitomi comes to the girl's side. She's looking at her with profound love in her eyes. On the left side of the girl, Takeuchi Seiji reaches for her hand to hold it. They look like a perfect family of three - mother, father, and daughter.
They are as perfect as the castle of cards, easily broken by a breeze.
What a beautiful illusion!
Suddenly, the girl is alone. There is no Kamiyama Hitomi or Takeuchi Seiji by her side. The girl can't understand what is going on. The faceless people point at her.
"Daughter of a dirty woman!"
"I heard that her mother was pregnant with her child."
"Her father left her. Maybe, she's not his daughter either."
"Wild species! She will grow up and seduce men just like her mother."
The girl bows down her head and hears it. It's not that they can't see her tears. It's not that they can't hear her sobs. They choose to ignore. The pain of a child without a father and a mother is none of their business. What matters is that they can gossip and point fingers at someone who is present in front of their eyes.
"What did I do wrong?" She turns around and asks me. Her quiet sorrow is haunting to me. "Why did I suffer?"
I don't know how to answer her.
She sighs. I see her rapidly changing. There are bruises on her. Her clothes are no longer clean. The smile has disappeared. She's surrounded by kids her age, pointing and laughing. Her mouth is stuffed with dirt. She throws up in front of everyone, entertaining them. Some have already left, disgusted. Nobody comes to help her.
Sitting in front of her grandparents, the girl can barely look at the food. She can't forget what they made her eat. She is disgusted by herself.
"Rie Chan, I made your favorite food." Her grandmother pushes it to her. To make her grandmother happy, she tries to eat. She can't swallow it down. The food tastes like trash that they made her eat. She throws up and hears kids laughing around her.
"What happened to you?" Her grandmother holds her before she clutches her stomach and faints.
One by one, the memories are repeating. The girl becomes a teenager. She finds solace in gaming. Still, she has to go to school to experience nightmares.
"Can you still not answer why it happened to me?" The girl looks at her without any emotion. "You still don't know. Nothing has changed then."
"Why do you ask?" I question her. "I never did any wrong. Then, why did this happen to me? I have always been a..."
"A pitiful person?" The girl laughs at me.
"I am not...," I shout at her. "Don't call me that."
"I will tell you why." The girl morphs into Hashimoto Chisa. "It's because you deserved it. Rie Chan, you can try acting brave. You will remain the same. You are too weak to fight me. You can't even face yourself."
She steps toward me. I realize that I am frozen on my feet. I can't see anyone other than her. I see a small child is running toward me. Chisa also notices it. A cold smile appears on her lips.
"Don't come," I scream at the child. "Go away... Don't come."
The child doesn't stop. He runs toward me while laughing. His eyes are sparkling with happiness. Before he can reach me, Chisa grabs him by his neck. I scream at her to stop. "Chisa, stop right now."
"Come and stop me then." She smirks at me. "Can you? I doubt it. You are the same Rie. You can't even protect yourself. Can you protect your loved ones?"
Sound of bone snapping. The child's neck is twisted abnormally. He melts in her hands. She stands up and walks to me. Her bloody hand touches my cheek. "Why do you try when you have no strength to fight? You should hide again to survive this pain."
The sound of the sharp ringing of the phone wakes me up. I don't know how long I stared at the ceiling. My body is covered with a cold sweat. How many times will I see this? The ringing doesn't stop. I get out of the bed. My head is aching. I reach for the glass of water.
It falls from my hand when the damn phone starts ringing again.
Who is trying to kill me this early in the morning? I don't have the energy to talk to anyone.
