"Hey, what are you doing?" I shout at him and other people. "This is my house. Is there any law in this nation or not? Can anyone break my house like this?"
"40 seconds." He looks at his watch.
"Answer me." I glare at him. "Are you not afraid of the law? I will send you to prison for this."
"35 Seconds." He has a smile on his bastard face. "Kamiyama family will take responsibility."
"What?" He is saying those same words again. "Are you ready to go to prison?"
"We will pay for the rebuilding this house and any other damage that the Kamiyama family has caused to the victim." His eyes are fixed on his watch. "25 seconds."
"The FUCK!" I hear some gasps from the crowd. Why? Never heard of a woman cuss before?
"We will give you a well-paying job suitable for the victim and a temporary place to stay until the house is rebuilt." He raises his other hand in the air. "15 seconds."
Shit. He is serious. I can't take the risk. I run inside the house and grab my laptop and phone. What else? I look around. Argh!
"3." I hear him yell. "2.1."
The wrecking wall rocks the wall. I lie down on the floor again. These walls are already old. What if my house collapses on me? When it swings back out, I run with all my might. I guess I won't die today.
"Finish this quickly," He tells them.
I call the cops.
Me: "Hello, someone is breaking my house."
Cop: "You mean, someone is breaking into your house?"
Me: "No, someone is BREAKING my house. Please come quickly. I only have one place to live in this entire world."
Cop: "Okay, we are coming as fast as we can. Can you tell us your address?"
Me: "Third house on N Street, District A."
His face doesn't show any change when he hears me talking to the cop. He is calmly looking at the destruction. My heart is breaking. My safe haven. My childhood. My home. My grandparents' house. What is wrong with this man? When did I wrong him? The cops are taking time. If he continues, there will be nothing left.
"Stop this." I grab his arm. "What do you want from me?"
He signals them to stop the demolition. "If you sign this paper, I will stop it."
He gives me a paper. I start to read them. The legal language seems like voodoo to me. I frown at the words. I know the programming languages, but I can't understand these words well. I have a weak vocabulary. These words are too complicated. I need to download a dictionary. I look for my phone.
"I don't think that you have the time." He gives me a pen. "If you don't sign them in the next five seconds, I will completely demolish your house."
"What is written on these papers?" I ask him.
"You are formally cutting all the ties with the Kamiyama family," He answers me curtly.
That's what I want. I look at the half-broken house and sign the paper.
"Thank you." He takes them back. The cops arrive at that exact time and look at the broken house. Is this a coincidence?
"Who called us?"
"Me." I raise my arm. "This man broke my house."
The young cop studies me. Then, he looks at Kamiyama. "Is she speaking the truth?"
"Yes." He gives them the paper. "She asked me to break it."
Wait, what? Fuck!
"I.DID.NOT." I shout at them.
The cop reads the paper to confirm. "Miss, it is written here that you agree with the terms of the Kamiyama Group. You will let them rebuild this house because of the psychological damage that they have caused you. You are also joining their main company as an errand girl in the fashion department. Until your house is rebuilt, you agree to stay at Kamiyama main house."
What the actual fuck!
"I don't want anything from them." I understand my predicament now. A lost moment cannot come back. The ink can't be erased from that paper. "I take it back. I don't want to get involved with them. I don't want them to take any responsibility."
The cop looks at me like I have gone mad. "If you refuse the contract now, you have to go to prison. You will lose this house to the Kamiyama group."
I open my mouth wide, unable to speak.
"Yes." The cop shows me the sentence. "You didn't read this when you signed this?"
I didn't read any of this. I try to read the words. Ah! Am I an illiterate? Why can't I read it properly? I can't even pronounce these words.
"What is this language?"
"Miss, did you go to school?" He asks me doubtfully. "It is the same language that you are speaking. I agree that these words are tough and formal. You need a good lawyer to tackle this."
"..."
I stare at Kamiyama Kiyohira. He doesn't have any expression. But, in his eyes, I can see that he is complacent about it. Do you feel happy to fool a high school graduate?
I turn to the cop. "Is prison a bad place to live?"
"Miss, it is better if you agree with them." He rereads the papers.
"You will get a rebuilt house with the best material. You will get a high paying job with promised promotions in every three years. You will also get free holiday trips until you retire. Kamiyama family is also taking responsibility for your wedding, your future's children's educations, and jobs, and they will even help you find a groom."
"This is slavery." I grab my hair. "This is what hell feels like."
"Miss, life is not good in prison." The cop gives me back the papers. "You will get a lifetime record. You will lose this house to the Kamiyama groups. You will never get hired at any place for the rest of your life. That is the true hell."
Prison or Hell? Prison or Hell? Prison or Hell?
"Hell, it is." I pick up my laptop and hug it. "I will do what they want. I don't want to go to prison."
"Good choice." The cop smiles at me. "We are happy to resolve misunderstandings."
After the cops leave, Kiyohira looks at me. "Let's go."
"Where?" I have no energy left. He grabs my arm and drags me along with him. He opens the car door and pushes me inside. I see them demolishing my house.
My safe haven... is disappearing.
The driver starts the car. I keep my eyes on my house until it disappears from the view. My poor house.
"Until the news dies down, you have to stay at our house and pretend that you are going along with our family." I hear him say, "You have to dress nicely and act like a sister to my younger brother and a granddaughter to my grandmother. You must use a clean and polite language. After a while, I will send you to stay at the other place until your house is rebuilt."
"Huh?" I look at him. "You will let me go back?"
"Yes." He checks his phone. "You have to go to work daily on time and work seriously. For other people, our family is seriously taking care of you. So, I hope that you work there diligently. I don't have many expectations of you. Someone who can't even read a legal document properly can't be worth much."
"Hey, it was really hard," I yell at him. "You deliberately made it hard."
"Still, you should have studied hard in high school." He leans back. "After everything becomes the same way again, you can leave the company and go back to the way you lived before. The Kamiyama family will not have any connection with you."
I take a deep breath and stares out of the window. Anything is better than nothing right now.
***
Kiyohira watches her. She's asleep with a pleasant smile, drooling from the corners of her lips. He brings out his handkerchief and reaches to wipe away her drools. He stops midway and frowns. What is he doing?
He recalls all the words that she has spoken to him and how she even slapped with that small hand of her. Why is she still alive? He needs her to be alive to mend this situation.
Until this news fades away and everything becomes the way it was, he would not let her live. It would be inconvenient if she runs around with that wild mouth of hers.
After the news dies down, he will make sure that she takes each word back.
After the news dies down, he will make sure that she disappears from this country.
After the news dies down, he will make sure...
The list is long.
"Kiyo..." She mumbles in her sleep. Kiyohira looks at her. Is she dreaming about him?
"You bastard!" She curses him in her sleep. "Die! You bastard."
Kiyohira grabs her shoulder and tries to jerk her awake.
"Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!" She lifts her head. Strands of her hair fall on her face with patches of dried drools on her chin.
"Who are you?"
He flicks her forehead. "Who I am?"
She laughs. "You are that Kamiyama's bastard."
