Chương 3: Chapter 3 : The Red

Those eyes were indeed breathtaking. Her little boy. Her Kenji. Aya gazed into his eyes with fear. Those eyes she knew quite well. A retired Ninja of twenty years could never forget. The monstrous eyes of 'those people'. The Uchiha. She snapped back to reality as her son looked up to her with boiling tears trailing down his cheeks. She look upon this moment everyday with dread. The dread of telling Kenji why almost every village will strive to kill him in the future. Why everyone would try to use him for selfish gain, and why she was not his real mother. Aya discarded her fear and contempt for Kenji's eyes. He was, after all, her son. If he succumbed to the curse of those eyes, she was prepared to blame herself for all of it. Aya took full responsibility. Even in constant fear, Kenji still remained curious towards his newly evolved eyes. Without satisfying his curiosity, Aya enveloped him in a hug, assuring him everything is fine. I love you. Silently, Aya began crying. Not from fear, but from the heartache that she knew would find Kenji some way or another.

After Kenji awakened his sharingan, Aya bombarded Kenji with questions. The most important dealing with the emotional trauma that is essential for the sharingan awakening. It started with Kenji playing outside. He noticed a fly caught in a spider web several feet off the ground. Kenji being Kenji, he tried to climb the tree harboring the web to get a closer look. After several minutes, Kenji reached the web only to see the fly getting ravaged by the spider. His eyes began to hurt like a wave of fire passed through the depths of his eye sockets. When Aya heard this, she smiled. She had basic knowledge of the Uchiha, but she doubted a sharingan has been awakened from the trauma of bugs before. Her drive to protect Kenji and this unnaturally innocent heart of his skyrocketed. Kenji asked Aya what his eyes were but she didn't want to reveal everything until he was older. She explained that they were a special Kekkei Genkai passed down from his father, which technically wasn't wrong. Kenji frowned at hearing the word 'father'. Kenji wanted to ask him why he left him and his mother.

Aya explained the utmost importance to not show anyone his 'other eyes' which only sparked more questions trying to bubble out of Kenji's mouth at rapid speed. Aya angrily closed his mouth.

Just do as I say please. Promise me?" Aya held Kenji's hand with worried ruffled eyebrows and a crinkled forehead.

Kenji croaked out an "Ok". He lightly smiled towards Aya as she hugged him. Kenji could feel the extra pressure derived from the hug and wheezed slightly. Aya couldn't help it. She hugged him as if he would drift off and fly away when she released him. That night, Aya couldn't help it. She ghosted into Kenji's room and watched him while he slept. Thankful for the son she never knew she wanted. The next day, Aya picked Kenji up while he was still sleeping and quietly made her way to the backyard. Only ten feet from the water, she reinforced her arms and legs with chakra. WOOSH! Kenji flew thirty feet into the air. Kenji thought he must have left a window open until he opened his eyes at the peak of his height and struck the water with a splash.

Kenji surfaced when Aya yelled, "You say you want to be a ninja with THAT awareness?" She chuckled and began a trek towards the house. Kenji couldn't help but get riled up. He wanted to prove to Aya more than anything what he was capable of. He knew she loved him dearly, but often times, she played tricks on him. Aya could feel Kenji's chakra flaring and smirked while walking. She could motivate this kid yet. She needed to. And he needed to learn, for his sake.

3 Months later...

Kenji and Aya strolled out the front door of their house fairly quickly. Kenji was beginning his first day at the secretly infamous academy. His jet-black hair ruffled in the wind exposing his tanned forehead as he tried to drag Aya along. Patience is a virtue. He heard this many times from Aya, and to be honest, he was tired of hearing it. Aya shocked him from his wonderland to tightly grasp his wrist and frown.

She leaned down to Kenji's ear. "Stop right now or I will beat your ass!" Aya whispered through the grain in her teeth.

Kenji didn't say anything. He sheepishly looked down and nodded. Aya gave a light smile. She knew how to be a mother. Her mother basically beat her if she made a small mistake, so Aya tried to raise Kenji with double the love. If he did something she didn't like though, Kenji would be the first to know.

Kenji looked around the Hidden Mist. He only came into town a few times with Aya because he wouldn't quit asking her to go. He wondered why civilians eyed him up and down like he wasn't supposed to be here. Even though Aya tried to play it safe and not take the main roads, people still wondered about Kenji. Kenji, however, kept his thoughts to himself since Aya was already mad. When they came to the academy, many parents surrounded the outside of the entrance trying to make sure their kid was registered. Aya proceeded with caution as she found an empty bench and started filling out information. Kenji hopped up onto the seat and swayed his feet back and forth while smiling his face off.

It didn't take that long. A few minutes later, Aya gained her composure and stood, prompting Kenji to do the same. Kenji's mother forced a smile and lowered to one knee.

While fighting back the urge to snatch Kenji up and high tail it home. She knew he needed this. Kenji had to be strong for everyone's sake. She just prayed he doesn't lose his way in the process. Like any mother would do she started kissing all over Kenji's face and neck.

"Mom stop!" Kenji muttered in embarrassment.

"Be good, Ok?" Aya said lovingly.

"Yes Ma'am!" Kenji stood at attention with nothing but serious on his face.

Aya laughed. "Here take that to your teacher." She handed him the information packet. "I'll be back to get you when school ends." She smiled and began to disappear. Kenji waved at the dot in the distance and could faintly see her wave back.

He turned and faced the academy. This is it, he thought. The first adventure without good ole mom. Gotta start somewhere.
