If the soul does act as a feul source, then this would explain why the soul doesn't escape hell. It would also help limit the needed speed of expansion of hell, which would, in turn, make it possible for hell to continue burning for as long as the soul intake is higher than the usage for the flames. that is just my thought process, lol. cool question and nice answer.
