Her 1st thought of failure is when she lost Sunny…
"I failed to keep you by my side in the Dark City, didn't I? I failed to take control of the Bright Castle, too… I wanted to usurp Gunlaug's throne a few days after killing him. I had everything prepared, but in the end, it took many weeks of bloody struggle to achieve the goal. Each additional day that passed, each Sleeper that died fighting fellow humans… were my failures. It wasn't easy to come to terms with."

No, he had a duel with the man’s son. It was when he 1st started seeing Nephis again. Right before the popcorn reveal.
Sunny had also discussed the upcoming battle with the Saints assigned to his war party. There were eight of them, all hailing from the vassal clans of Valor. He had no prior impression of most of them, except for Saint Rivalen of Aegis Rose — who was the father of the young Master Tristan, whom Sunny had beaten in a duel once.

Husky doesn’t = male. I have young friend that never did any of that. Her voice is a bit deeper then her sisters, but still feminine.
She gazed at the champions of the Song Army, remained silent for a while, and then spoke in her subtle, husky voice:

He is habitual checking her runes as well. But it’s just a habit… 😉 It’s implied that he does this a lot, even though g3 doesn’t mention it.
Sunny had actually not expected to receive an answer so soon, but there it was. He habitually summoned the runes to check on Neph, and then blinked a couple of times, noticing that the list of her Memories seemed much longer than it had been before.

When Nephis was traveling across the dream realm, she used boredom as an excuse to keep checking his runes and thinking about him. So, what what is her excuse now? She has to be busy with Valor stuff, but she is obviously still checking a lot. 💕 1 day to check, and 1 day to acquire the memories.
…Two days after he had sent his message, Nephis finally responded.

It’s possible she started to remember something from the past. And this is the side effect kicking in, where they lose line of thought.
With that, she seemed to forget about his existence and looked at Nephis.

I just realized that when Sunny 1st got the Sin of Solace, he described its whisper as a rustle. He could not understand it at the time. I suspect, that this has something to do with Rains aspect or flaw. It’s starting to form.
'What... what was that rustle?'

Rain: dearest Brother, please tell me how amazing you are so I can brag to my classmates. Sunny:
"Sunny: Hey. An officer? Gods, who do you think I am… of course I am! Let me tell you, I am a captain of the most elite unit in the whole army. I have a bunch of powerful Awakened under me, and a reputation so fearsome that other Masters want to be my friends. The Devil of Antarctica, that's what they call me… well, I'm sure someone does… maybe. Just yesterday, an actual Saint personally expressed gratitude to me. I will probably get a medal soon, too. Oh, I am also in charge of a cutting-edge armored personnel carrier called the Rhino. You won't believe how amazing it is. Let me describe it! First of all..."

Sunny - “I had dreams of fighting stuff my own rank, once upon a time.” Fate - “wheezing laughter in background”
Awakened were supposed to fight Nightmare Creatures of their own Rank. Facing a Fallen abomination was usually a recipe for disaster, and only a small amount of human warriors could be confident in defeating an overbearing foe like that. Killing a creature of a higher Rank was a rare enough accomplishment that it could substantially change one's reputation.
