So, if this is not the symbol of the dark element, and dual element mages don't exist, maybe your first hypothesis shouldn't be that it's the darkness element. Sure it's right because the author said so, but if maya were to cut the back of her right had without noticing, and found out later the red shape that appeared out of nowhere, I doubt her first idea would be "holy shit I'm a water fire mage"

It really is painfully stupid, someone like the head priest probably has enemies, head of competing or oposing groups are the firsts that come to mind (the group of dark mages would probably want the most talented light mage to die an early death, and if there is a royal family or something like that, a governement that does not depends on mages for thei authority, they'd probably also want him dead just to prevent the church from growing it's influence further), but inside enemies, priest that competed with him for the spot of head priest, and internal group with different philosophies could also want him dead just to undermine the authority of the head priest. To reach such a high position, the head priest is probably a smart man, he would have thought of that, so it is mind boggling that no steps were taken to prenvent the mc's death

yeah this kind of character fives a good idea of what to expect from the novel, take your brains off everyone, we won't be needing these anymore! On a serious note, please make your antagonists make sense, suspension of incredulity only works is the world the author exposes is believable within it's ruleset, and dumb shit like that is not. Their plan and how they executed it make no sense, how did they hide on a roof, what do they expect from killing a member of one of the most influential organisations in the world, how come no protection was given to the youth that was supposed to be the most talented light mage to ever exist. Nothing makes sense and it's painful to read, novel were never carfully crafted masterpieces, but they still had some self respect at some point, now new novels feel like fast food reading, produced as fast as possible and with duch little quality that it is hard to actually read through it.
