I would have done it so differently. First of all I would kill kaoru right in front of the old man after she told him who they were. Then I would tell the old man that because of his attack I would kill every last one of his clan, leaving none of that clan alive. Then I would take everything they had (money, magic books, etc.) then I would send a message to the other clans that if this happened again I would kill everyone else until there was no one left. After that I'm sure they would understand the message.
