i think since there was a lot of plot holes, the lack of information was used to cover them often. its a fanfic, just say AU, and go on, have fun with the book. many times authors over complicate stuff and get burned out

Male is Valeriy, short Valera. And female is Valeriya or Valeria with short being Lera usually. There is a meme where a funny drug addict calls his revolver Valera, and tells everyone that Valera will fix all his problems. goes something like "Valera, your time has come" and pulls it from a glovebox. Every time i read this name i imagine that youtube character :D
