it was early on, but then it become the default "vanilla" trope so now a bunch of novels seem to be avoiding it. it's not as though it leads to a bad novel, but it leads to a bunch of Han Solo copies or some variation on Mando MC, not much else.

So I'm sure it's probably been changed or elabortated on as time has past, but the current "canon" is that most magical families of the sacred 28, including the Malfoys, came over under the service of William the Conqueror (from Normandy) who ruled England from 1066 onward until his death. that being said, this was definitely a later retcon type lore expansion from Rowling so I wouldn't read too much into it.
