Right it's not a bad thing to have motivation. So why make it a time limit and have it feel like he will die if he doesn't "level up". Obviously he isn't going to die and if he does he will come back some way. Which is why I said it's a cop out, avoiding giving a legitimate reason for motivation. His motivation currently is to ring the cancer bell... ok. It could have been that he wanted to protect his lab rat buddies, but he doesn't seem to care about which is fine. It could have been that he wanted a family or something similar, but he doesn't seem to care about interacting with his daddies currently which is fine. It could have quite frankly been "I want to be Marvel Jesus"
