The only thing I can think to counter with, as far as I know, is that every sentient race in marvel has some version of cancer. So if he got cancer and it became asgardian cancer, then he fudged.
It was just cancer, after all. With so much already happening to him, a little more wouldn't hurt. At most, it would be a minor inconvenience—nothing too serious.
