98.93% Wretch: Exception To The Rule / Chapter 185: Long Day

บท 185: Long Day

Superstes remained unmoving as the influx of experience she earned from slaying Axiolypito rushed into her, restoring her golden energy and its healing factor at the same time.

She didn't even noticed her wounds or arm growing back, she didn't pay attention to the nasty scars left behind, she used to retain her child-like face but it was completely gone now, replaced by a visage of complete apathy.

Looking back on her journey, what had been the whole point?

Avenge her parents? Simply kill Axio for her own wishes? Something else she had missed entirely?

If either of the first two was the truth- Then why was she feeling like this?

'...'

She looked at the simple mantle left behind by her archnemesis, torn and tattered, also weird.

He had been wearing other articles of clothing, why did this one not burn away life the rest alongside his corpse?

Ignited by curiosity, her eyes finally took notice of the messages the system had bombarded her with.

*Congratulations! You have slayed a divine being*

*Congratulations! You have slayed the abyssal king*

*Congratulations! You have slayed the monster king*

*Congratulations! You have slayed an apostle of Mov*

*Your name has been etched in the Blind One's memory*

*You are a legend, stand proud*

She blinked a few times, finally noticing at the same time that she had recovered her missing eye.

The system had spouted its usual load of nonsense no one cared about, but it also said some pretty strange things.

Most curious of all however.

It had praised her, since when did the system bother to be amiable?

Grabbing the small mantle, she noticed nothing strange about it, though any residual presence of the wretch seemed to have disappeared alongside himself, as though Superstes had erased every trace of him.

'What about the other?' she thought with a disturbing calm, making her way toward the edge of the elevated pillar, it was high but she could still see what was happening on the ground clearly.

The monsters, all corrupted by Axio's Abyss, were dying, turning into nothing but disgusting piles of gore as their minds broke.

Not a single monster that had been affected by the dark light would survive, they were condemned to follow their king into death.

Using her golden wings, Superstes made her way toward ground level, already aware of the results the battle had had on her allies.

"Superstes... You did it?" hearing a voice calling out to her, the heroine retracted her gaze from what laid on the ground and instead faced Blouvier.

The life mage didn't seem in her best shape, her white and golden robe had turned into a dark shade, not a single trace of the gold remained visible.

Part of her unnaturally youthful face was dried up and ressembled that a mummy, the drawback of the way she and Reduvia had used to break free from their underground coffin, death force had degraded her body.

Though it was nothing she wouldn't eventually recover from.

"Yes..." Superstes didn't know what to say.

Blouvier was the only one still standing and in shape of conversing with her.

Everyone else... Was in poor shape to say the least.

"I would have been able to get them back up in no time normally, but... The Abyss infesting the monsters spread to them too, I can't manipulate their life force or intervene with life magic" Blouvier could only barely maintain them alive, only they could combat the Abyss trying to corrupted their bodies.

The life mage looked to the side with a forlorn expression, there laid Mart, his stagnation spell was the only reason not all of them were dead, but it had limits, he wasn't able to maintain it for everyone and he chose someone else than himself to shield.

Half of his face had melted off into a dark goo, his expression wasn't sad or bitter, he seemed quite content with himself.

Superstes's was instead focusing on another of the bodies, she walked through them all, confirming that Mart must had actually died from expending his own life force to maintain his spell active on the others.

Only he and one other had fallen to the relentless horde.

She knelt next to her master's corpse, feeling completely distant for the whole scene, as though her soul had left her body and was watching from afar.

Solitar, Sir Solitar had of course fought at the forefront, facing the unrelenting tide head-on.

But he had succumbed to them and she knew exactly why it was so, at one point, he had thrown his blade away, probably on pure instinct, simply knowing that his blade would do good elsewhere, in someone else's hands.

He had discarded his sword and forced himself to fight monsters which bodies and blood was toxic even to him.

Despite being showered in Abyss, his remains were free of any abject mutation or destruction, he stayed proud and noble even in death.

Superstes gritted her teeth as she failed to feel sadness for his loss, covering her face with one hand, she didn't want anyone to see how little she cared.

"We should get them away from here" she suggested without turning to look at Blouvier, still fixated on the unmoving figure of her mentor.

A hand found its way on her back, it felt reassuring.

"No need to hide, you don't have to beat yourself over the head for it, if you can't feel sad, then there is no need for you to be, however..." Blouvier moved up next to Superstes.

Calmly moving the blonde girl's hand away from her face.

"You and I both know that you don't truly feel nothing about this" Blouvier tapped Superstes's shoulder before using a simple spell to lift everyone from the ground seamlessly.

The heroine looked up into the distance, her eyes dull.

The dark blue moon was disappearing, allowing for the sun to shine once more, its radiance was a familiar gold for a few moments before returning to normal.

Day had succesfully chased the night away, the majority of monsters inhabiting Lordlorn had died.

The future had never been brighter.
