61.38% VOWS OF BETRAYAL / Chapter 62: The Cost of Trust

บท 62: The Cost of Trust

The drive back to the estate was steeped in silence, the weight of the ambush hanging heavy in the air. Dante sat beside me, his jaw clenched and his eyes staring straight ahead. Blood stained his hands—not his own, but the work of the chaos we'd just escaped.

I wanted to say something, to ease the tension, but I didn't know where to start. Every word felt meaningless in the aftermath of what had just happened. Instead, I focused on the ache in my shoulder, a sharp reminder that survival had come at a cost.

The estate gates swung open as the convoy rolled in, what remained of our forces pulling into the safety of the compound. Dante stepped out first, barking orders to the men as I followed behind him.

"Matteo!" Dante's voice carried authority, sharp and biting. "I want a full report on who leaked this. I want names by the end of the night."

Matteo nodded, his expression grim. "I've already started digging. Whoever sold us out will regret it."

They exchanged a look—one that spoke volumes about the ruthlessness required to rule this world. Betrayal was unforgivable, and the consequences would be brutal.

"Elizabeth," Dante said, turning to me. His voice softened slightly, though his eyes still held that steely edge. "Come with me."

I followed him inside, the echoes of our footsteps bouncing off the marble floors as we made our way to his private study. The heavy doors closed behind us, sealing us in.

Dante didn't sit. He paced, his movements restless, like a predator circling its cage.

"She played us," he said, his voice low and lethal. "Maria knew exactly how we'd respond, and she used it against us."

"She wanted to draw blood," I said, crossing my arms. "And she did. But what's her endgame?"

He stopped, turning to face me. "Power. Control. She wants to tear down everything I've built and take it for herself."

The fire in his eyes was unmistakable—rage tempered by a dangerous, calculated mind. Dante Stormborn wasn't a man who took losses lightly, and Maria had just made herself his primary target.

---

A Revelation

Before Dante could respond, a knock sounded at the door. Matteo stepped in, a grim expression on his face.

"We found something," he said, holding up a file. "One of the men who set the explosives. He's alive—barely."

Dante's eyes narrowed. "Where is he?"

"The interrogation room."

A chill ran down my spine. Dante's interrogation methods were infamous, and I knew this man wouldn't leave the room the same—if he left at all.

"I want answers," Dante said, his tone cold. "Everything he knows. Who he's working for, how they got their information, and why they thought they could get away with this."

Matteo nodded and disappeared down the hall, leaving Dante and me alone again.

"Do you trust Matteo?" I asked after a moment.

Dante's gaze snapped to mine. "Why do you ask?"

I hesitated. "Because if there's a mole in your organization, it could be anyone."

"Not Matteo," he said firmly. "He's been with me since the beginning. He'd die before betraying me."

I wanted to believe him, but the seed of doubt had been planted.

---

The Interrogation

I stayed behind while Dante went to oversee the interrogation. I wasn't sure I wanted to see what he was capable of in that room—it wasn't a side of him I was ready to face.

Instead, I wandered the halls of the estate, trying to process everything that had happened. My mind kept replaying the ambush, the explosions, the chaos. But more than that, I kept thinking about Maria.

She wasn't just ruthless; she was clever. Every move she made was calculated, designed to exploit weaknesses and sow discord. And the more I thought about it, the more I realized we were missing something.

Maria's attacks were escalating, but there was a pattern—a rhythm to her chaos. If I could figure it out, maybe we could predict her next move.

I found myself in the library, surrounded by shelves of books and the faint scent of old paper. Sitting down at the desk, I pulled out my notebook and started writing, sketching out every attack she'd orchestrated and every counter we'd attempted.

There had to be a connection. Something we were missing.

---

Confrontation

Hours passed before Dante returned. His shirt was stained with blood, and his expression was darker than I'd ever seen.

"He talked," he said simply, pouring himself a glass of whiskey.

"And?" I prompted, setting my pen down.

"He confirmed what we suspected—Maria has someone inside the organization. Someone feeding her information."

The room seemed to grow colder at his words.

"Did he say who?"

Dante shook his head. "No. But he gave us a lead. A meeting place where her informant is supposed to report back in two days."

Two days. It wasn't much time to prepare, but it was better than nothing.

"Do you think it's enough?" I asked, standing to face him.

"It has to be," he said, his voice like steel.

His gaze softened slightly as he looked at me. "Elizabeth... I need you to stay close. Until we figure out who we can trust, I can't take any risks."

I nodded, understanding the unspoken fear beneath his words. Dante was many things, but he wasn't invincible. And neither was I.

---

A Dangerous Alliance

That night, as I lay in bed, sleep refused to come. My mind was a whirlwind of doubts and fears, each one more suffocating than the last.

Maria's shadow loomed over everything, her influence growing with every move she made. But more than that, the thought of a traitor within Dante's ranks kept gnawing at me.

What if it wasn't just one person? What if her web of influence was deeper than we realized?

I sat up, staring out the window at the moonlit grounds below. The estate felt like a fortress, but even fortresses could fall from within.

Dante's life, his empire, and everything he'd built were on the line. And whether I liked it or not, so was mine.
