Elvira noticed her husband's face fall. The man who had tried his best to make her sisters feel welcome had his eyes dropped to the ground in discomfiture. Valaine's statement was humiliating. She had no right to accuse him of that. Why couldn't they accept the truth? Why did they have to blame Wivior for everything?
"I thought you were here with an open mind," Elvira spoke to Valaine.
"Of course I am. Your brother-in-law gets under my skin and forces the worst out of my throat. Besides, I have the right to be concerned about my and Leona's safety. We had only met him a few hours ago," Valaine defended herself. Cockiness had left her vibration as she now feared confrontation.
