Their eyes locked for a full five seconds before Liam finally tried to break the tension.
"Uh… you better not stop halfway. You're making this really uncomfortable for me."
Hearing Liam's words, Sophia snapped back to reality and quickly focused on the task at hand. A faint blush spread across her cheeks, feeling warm and flushed. She kept her head down, not wanting Liam to see her face turning red. A surge of emotion had taken over earlier, creating a particularly ambiguous and awkward atmosphere. Thankfully, this was a battlefield, with corpses scattered around, preventing the mood from becoming overly romantic.
But thinking about this, Sophia felt a bit annoyed by Liam's straightforward comment. How could he not react at all?
Just as she was thinking this, a few divine servants burst in through the doorway.
"Get out!" Without even turning around, Sophia flicked her right hand backward. A surge of frost erupted, and the intruding divine servants didn't even have a chance to speak before being reduced to icy shards.
Sophia, newly ascended to the Sixth Realm, had reached a new level of power. Now, facing these Third and Fourth Realm opponents, she could dispatch them with ease.
Seeing this, Liam was at a loss for words. He had managed to hold the line for three hours, not allowing anyone to cross, but it had been a tough battle. It certainly wasn't this easy.
Thunk!
With a dull sound, the spearhead was finally pulled from Liam's chest. It was as if all his strength had been drained with it. His legs buckled, and he found himself starting to fall. Three hours without getting killed, but he was almost dead from exhaustion.
The next moment, he realized he had fallen into a soft embrace, Sophia's slightly anxious voice sounding in his ear.
"Didn't you say you could heal yourself?! What's wrong?"
As she spoke, Sophia knelt down on one knee, letting Liam rest against her thigh, his head on her abdomen. Seeing the terrifying wound on his chest healing at an incredible rate, Sophia finally sighed with relief.
"No... I'm just exhausted. I feel like my health bar hasn't changed, but my energy bar is completely empty."
"I'm totally out of juice..."
Liam joked, moving his head slightly, suddenly feeling something soft and round.
"Hmm… what's this?..."
Smack!
Sophia slapped Liam's head, her face slightly red as she said,
"Don't move!"
At that moment, a few injured superhumans rushed in through the doorway, their footsteps hurried and urgent. Sophia whipped her head around and, seeing that they were allies, lowered her hand that had been ready to attack.
"Why are you here? What's happening? Is the situation outside under control?"
The superhumans stopped quickly and said,
"The situation is mostly stable now. Thanks to you successfully slaying a god earlier, their morale has taken a huge hit!"
"But..."
As he spoke, his gaze suddenly paused, his eyes widening in disbelief at the scene before him.
Why was a man lying in the Frost War Goddess's arms? And his head was…
"But what? Continue." Sophia frowned, "This is Liam. He's been guarding this place for three hours and got injured."
One of the superhumans almost blurted out, "I'm injured too," but thought better of it. He quickly continued,
"However, we need to start evacuating people immediately. All the divine fetuses have been destroyed. Earlier, there was another divine projection, but it was slain by the War God Qingtian and Deputy Dean Zhong Jing working together."
"But now, a 'Fury'-level god has descended. Even though it's a projection, this one is extremely realistic!"
Sophia's expression immediately turned serious.
"'Fury' level? Are you sure?!"
"Dean Mo said so."
"Alright, go to the underground area and start evacuating the students!"
The group nodded and quickly headed toward the underground area.
"'Fury' level—what kind of level is that? Sounds like another term I've never heard of," Liam asked.
"It's a classification system created by the Father of Superhumans for gods: Malice, Ferocity, Fury, Catastrophe, and Annihilation."
"Oh… so gods have levels too. But Fury is only the third level? Is it easy to deal with?"
"Not at all. The power of gods is not like what you'd imagine. If it were their true form descending, even a Fury-level would be a global disaster."
"Thankfully, it's just a projection. With Dean Mo here, it shouldn't be a big problem."
After a brief explanation and seeing that Liam's wound had healed, Sophia helped him to his feet. He glanced around, satisfied with his results. His steps were a bit unsteady as he said,
"Take me outside, Sophia. I want to see for myself."
"Back in my hometown, gods were intangible, unseen beings."
"Now that I'm here… I want to see what a real god looks like."
"Okay." Sophia didn't refuse. She naturally took Liam's arm. "I'll take you. You might not be in the best shape right now." With that, she moved, lifting off the ground, carrying Liam with her.
It didn't take long before Liam was captivated by the sight before him. The entire sky was golden! This wasn't an exaggeration or some literary device—the whole sky was genuinely golden!
In the sky, Cain hovered silently, his clothes fluttering without wind, as if he were immersed in a sea of gold. Before him was a golden light mass, shapeless but radiant.
On the ground, superhumans stood scattered, all with their heads lowered, quickly moving away from the golden light.
—This was divine might!
Where the god appeared, all others retreated!
"So this… is a god?" Liam murmured, somewhat dazed as he stared at the golden light.
Before he could finish speaking, everything went black as a hand covered his eyes.
"You can't look directly at a god, especially not for your first time! It could cause mental trauma!" Sophia warned in his ear.
"Does it affect you? If not, take me closer. I'll be fine; my healing ability can handle this." Liam insisted.
Sophia: ?
Ultimately, she couldn't refuse him. She took him closer to the battle, keeping her hand ready to cover his eyes if necessary. But now, Sophia turned her head, curiously observing Liam's expression.
For many superhumans, seeing a god for the first time was a major hurdle. The intense mental contamination could easily shatter their invincible spirit, leaving them with a lifelong shadow, unable to reach their full potential. Even the most determined geniuses often experienced some trembling their first time.
In short, reactions of steadfastness, fear, anger, or even despair were considered normal.
But Liam showed none of these.
In his eyes, reflecting the golden light, there was a calm excitement. Like a fish swimming against the current, full of defiance, his gaze seemed to say:
—I can't look at a god? Well, I want to look!
