บท 18: Chapter 18 new sorceress, heart sinking moment?
"Mister are you a Sorcerer?"
Cu contemplated whether he should answer truthfully or not as in this world many towns or even cities would welcome a sorcerer but upon seeing her curious eyes, he released a sigh before replying.
"that i am, yes."
there was a brief silence between the two as the silent atmosphere was slowly tearing at his peace of mind as Reonika managed to become something that he cared for something that Geoff longed for when he thought of the possibilities if Sortiara was still around.
Reonika managed to gain his goodwill despite her antics, family or companionship was something that sorcerers would crave for eventually with their long life and the memories of Geoff's long life of solitude, suffering and constant hunting made Cu unconsciously attach himself to the child.
Should this child push him away...? it would hurt almost as much as when he lost Sortiara if not more which is why this brief silence felt like a few decades before her young voice finally broke that looming fear.
"Can I become one too?"
it took him some time to process what she just said before he blurted it out.
"Wut?"
don't get him wrong, it is just that with the bad reputation of many sorcerers he assumed that she'd share the same amount of fear, disgust, or loathing towards sorcerers rather than asking if she could become one.
So the excited child asked again sounding off each syllable in her sentence with vigor.
"Can-I-be-come-one-too?"
Cu nodded before doing a facepalm as he was now sitting on the ground, assuming for the worse only to forget that this girl caught his attention due to her insatiable curiosity be it good or bad.
So he asked her a question that led to something for her to think about.
"if you became a sorcerer would save, sacrifice or leave your fallen enemy to fate?"
she was about to answer rather quickly but Cu cut her off.
"Think about your answer carefully as that will help me decide whether to teach you our ways or not. meet me at my inn room when you are sure of your answer as hopefully, I wish to still remain in this town for a bit longer"
Reonika sensed the hidden message under his words as she realized that her careless question may have led to her losing another person that she considered a friend...
Cu then disappeared like a mist before her very eyes leaving the child to her thoughts.
He arrived at his room before just collapsing on to it his words were more of getting Reonika to think thoroughly about her answer as he wanted her to be neutral too much good ruins nature, too sacrifice leaves too many scars which is why hopefully she will be a good initiate to lead as the sorcerer's life entailed loneliness unlike any other.
this was something Cu understood after melding with Geoff's memories, while he doesn't regret the change it still left a lasting fear that haunted him, even when he was killing the other sorcerers, that was something he did carelessly while following the battle instincts of his predecessor.
a necessary evil since the ones he killed had ill intentions against him.
the night fell as he waited for Reonika and his door was finally knocked on, Cu was tense as the girl was going to give him an answer of what would she do should she become a sorcerer.
and the little girl's answer satisfied him, Reonika has no intention of being a hero, nor did she care for riches and fame, all that Reonika wanted was to be stronger to never again cower before her enemies, to never again to be trampled under someone's foot she just wanted power to be able to protect herself and those that she cared about.
Cu was smiling at this as Geoff told him in his mind she'll make a fine sorcerer better than us given the time he agreed strongly before he summoned the initiating ritual circle, mixed with a silencing spell as it will hurt... very badly.
Reonika was determined thus she stepped into the ritual before her blood-curling cries followed.
---about a year later---
Cu opened up a small shop full of usable trinkets and potions as he was researching ways to make offerings that even humans can use it was fun to alter spells to fit the caster's/user's needs.
It was quite a journey to teach a curious child as she was pretty talented with creating weapons as she even copied the altered throwing spell that becomes a bow and arrow capable of releasing charged arrows that could rival late-stage silver ranked offerings.
though she still prefers swords more than anything it was better to have something that can attack from afar when dealing with ranged monsters and flying beasts, the interesting part of this town was none of them shunned Cu after they found out that he was a sorcerer that was willing to live in their town the addition boon was when he started handing out usable offerings for the townspeople.
As he was relaxing he had the sudden urge to sneeze a few times before finally succumbing to it.
*AAACCCCHHHHHHOOOOO*
The munchkin was currently on a mission with two additional offerings armor that was silver ranked sadly due to how hard it was to create a gold-ranked one which Cu still hasn't succeeded in making and the second was an alarm that would alert him should the rascal need his assistance with her current power Reonika should be fine against silver ranked monsters which were the range of strength the monster had at the moment so hopefully she'll retreat when needed.
while it was mostly bronze-ranked offerings and some silver ones they were more than happy to accept his experimental items Cu was trying to make Offerings that could be used without magic in case the time he ever loses his magic.
there was a man that came to his shop every day just recharge the offerings he had the altered homing/explosive spell, the man's name was Branden Mills a caucasian, he had black hair, black eyes, muscular build, standing 5'9" the man always sported a scary look thanks to his scarred up face and body, wearing a leather jacket and tank top underneath, leather pants, metal pauldrons, gauntlets, faulds, the man's choice of weapon was a Greataxe and the alter spell that was being recharged was a tomahawk.
Despite his scary look, the man was a loving father and husband as the kids that come around like to climb his body as they played and fooled around.
Branden often talked to Cu about the situation of the forest and the town, and the information Cu gave of how the monsters they would find helped a lot as there were fewer accidents or deaths thanks to this.
but what was said about the neighboring towns was unnerving there have been reports of a group of hooded people roaming around and one of them stated that they were from Avalon this did not bode well for Cu as when they traveled in groups that meant there was a strong monster around and the larger their numbers the stronger it was.
there were also some reports about the unnatural expansion of the forest that covered some of the nearby villages, the most disturbing one was about a city that became ruins overnight thanks to a dragon that took the form of a human attacking it with a horde of lesser dragons.
Cu's heart sank when not only the alarm offering he gave Reonika went off but also when the additional alarm he had applied a necklace he gave her that told him her overall health suddenly cut off.
He stormed out of his shop destroying the wall all while using the subskill he earned from the fairies Cu could care even less for his shop as now the very girl that he treated like his own daughter was what filled his mind with red streaks of light he quickly disappeared into the forest leaving the dumbfounded Branden staring at the mess he had made.
