บท 1: The Vow of Shadows

"You will marry him, Seraphina. There is no choice."

Princess Seraphina's heart skipped a beat. Her father, King Theron, stood before her with an unreadable expression, his voice cold as steel. The royal chamber felt suffocating, the walls echoing his harsh words. The flickering candlelight danced on the ancient tapestries, but the warmth in the room seemed to vanish.

Seraphina stared at her father, trying to process what he had just said. She had heard the rumors, of course. The whispers in the castle corridors. The hushed voices of servants who dared not speak too loudly in fear of his wrath. But this? This was far beyond what she had ever expected.

"The Shadow Lord?" she whispered, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to remain calm. Her eyes widened in disbelief. "Father, surely you don't mean—"

"I do," King Theron interrupted, his gaze unwavering. "The alliance between our kingdoms depends on this union. The Shadow Lord is a powerful ruler, and this marriage will secure the future of our people."

"But… they say he kills his brides." Seraphina's voice caught in her throat, her hands tightening into fists at her sides. She could hear the rumors in her mind: the cruel, bloodthirsty monster who had murdered his previous wives, leaving nothing but death in his wake. His name alone sent chills down the spines of everyone who heard it.

"He does," her father said bluntly, his eyes darkening. "But he will not harm you, Seraphina. You are different. You are the key to breaking the curse that binds him. That is why this must happen."

The words hit Seraphina like a hammer, the shock of it all making her knees weaken. She had always known that her marriage would be arranged, but she had never imagined it would be to such a man. A man who killed his wives. A man who lived in shadows.

"I don't want this," she said, her voice rising, a surge of defiance filling her chest. "I don't want to marry a monster."

The king's expression hardened, and he took a step forward, his voice lowering to a dangerous whisper. "Do not speak of the Shadow Lord like that. You will marry him, and you will do your duty to the kingdom. You will survive this, Seraphina, because I will not let anything happen to you." He paused, his eyes narrowing as if calculating the weight of his words. "You are the one who must break his curse."

A chill ran through Seraphina's spine. A curse. The Shadow Lord's curse had been spoken of for generations, a darkness that consumed him, making him both invisible and feared by all who dared cross him. He had been a figure of nightmare, a ruler whose very presence was said to command the shadows to bend to his will.

"How can I break his curse?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper, but the king's answer was not what she expected.

"By loving him."

The words hung in the air like a heavy weight, suffocating her.

"Loving him?" Seraphina repeated in disbelief. "But I don't even know him! How can I love a man who has killed countless others, a man who lives in the shadows?"

"Love is the key," King Theron replied, his voice softer now, but still firm. "You will go to him, and you will break the curse. It is the only way for both of you to be free. You are the one chosen for this task."

Seraphina shook her head, tears of frustration stinging her eyes. She didn't want this. She didn't want to be a pawn in some ancient prophecy, to be forced into a marriage with a man who was rumored to be a monster.

But as the king's gaze held hers, she saw the desperation in his eyes. He wasn't asking her. He was commanding her.

"And what if I fail?" she asked, her voice breaking. "What if I can't break the curse? What happens to me then?"

The king's face darkened. "If you fail," he said, his voice grave, "you will become part of the shadows. His bride. His prisoner. Forever."

The words felt like a dagger to her heart. She had no choice. She was bound by duty, by fate, and by the prophecy that had been written long before she was born.

She had to go.

The journey to the Shadow Lord's kingdom felt endless. Seraphina rode through the night, her thoughts a tangled mess of fear and uncertainty. The air around her seemed to grow colder as they crossed the border into the forbidden lands, where the sun's light barely touched the earth. The sky above was thick with dark clouds, casting an eerie gloom over everything.

The land seemed... wrong. A twisted forest stretched for miles, its trees gnarled and barren, as if life itself was afraid to grow here. Seraphina's heart pounded in her chest as she approached the heart of the Shadow Lord's domain.

Her horse slowed as they approached a towering castle, its silhouette barely visible against the stormy sky. The castle was enormous, made of dark stone that seemed to swallow the light, as if daring anyone to enter. Seraphina's breath caught in her throat. She had heard of the castle, but seeing it in person made the rumors seem like nothing compared to the reality.

The gates opened slowly, creaking on their hinges as if reluctant to allow anyone inside. Seraphina felt a chill run through her as she dismounted, her legs shaky beneath her. She was here.

And there was no turning back.

As she walked into the shadowy courtyard, she could feel eyes upon her, though she saw no one. The air was thick with silence, as if the entire world held its breath. She glanced around, expecting to see something, anything, but there was only darkness and the echo of her own footsteps.

"Welcome, Princess Seraphina."

The voice came from nowhere, cold and distant, yet it sent a shiver down her spine. She froze, her heart racing as she looked around, trying to find the source of the voice.

Then, slowly, a figure emerged from the shadows. A tall, cloaked man, his face obscured by a hood, stood before her. His presence was overwhelming, and for a moment, she could hardly breathe.

"You are the Shadow Lord?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper, though she was certain he could hear her.

The man's lips curled into a smile, though it was cold and filled with mystery. "I am Caelan. Your future husband."

And as the words left his mouth, the shadows around them seemed to grow darker, as if they, too, were drawn to his presence.

Seraphina's heart skipped a beat. She took a hesitant step forward, her breath catching in her throat as she finally saw his face—barely visible beneath the cloak. But before she could speak again, the ground beneath her feet trembled, and a low growl echoed through the courtyard. The shadows shifted, swirling around them, as if they had a life of their own.

A loud, crashing sound followed—like something large and dangerous had just been unleashed.

"Something has awakened," Caelan said, his voice now filled with a hint of urgency. "And it's coming for you."

Seraphina's eyes widened. She had no idea what she was about to face, but it was far worse than she could ever have imagined.

And in that moment, she realized: the darkness was not just around her... it was inside her, too.
