บท 2: Prologue

The village was something like she has never seen before. Well, to be exact, the people of the village and their extraordinary skills. Y/N couldn't process for a week what was happening around her and how she got there. But, she had no one here to help her find them. She wanted to go back. Go back and tell them about everything, about herself - her power. Was it chakra? She was still not used to all of it and couldn't remember every little thing. It felt almost like she was kept hidden from it on purpose.

But let's go back to how she got here in the first place, shall we?

The annoying voice got louder every second. The next thing she heard was the sound of curtains in her room being opened.

"Get up Y/N!"

Oh, right. There it was. Yes, the familiar voice that woke her up every single day early in the morning. She couldn't understand why she had to do this in the first place. No other kid in her village did it. Her mother always said it's for her own good and that she could learn everything early as she was special. Y/N felt 'could' was not the right word in the sentence. It needs to be replaced with 'should'. But she did it anyway. Her parents didn't yell at her and she could have the excuse of being exhausted for the next two hours after she comes back from hunting.

Y/N turned around and spoke while keeping the pillow over her face, "Five more minutes please." It was a lost cause and she already knew the answer, but it wouldn't hurt to try and get just five minutes of sleep right?

"No, come on, get up. Your father's waiting for you outside. Get dressed!"

She sat up yawning, eyes still closed. Y/N pressed her eyes tightly for a moment before opening them lightly and felt the cold breeze brush off her face. Lazily, she moved like a sloth and crawled towards the end of the bed, still taking a minute to get up from bed.

"Y/N!!!!" Her mother's voice rang, finally waking her up as she proceeded to run to the bathroom and wash her face.

Her family moved around the country a lot and so did the people with them. Her father explained it to be something related to business or trade, something she wasn't interested in anyway. She had her friends, family, and well-wishers along with her wherever she went so she didn't have anything to complain about. But, there was still a hollow feeling in her chest. Something changed in the atmosphere as recently the same friends and well-wishers looked at her differently. Some didn't look at all. She wanted to ask out of curiosity but...she couldn't gather up the courage. Oh, she did ask her parents, but they always dodged the question. Maybe she was sick or something, so she decided to leave it for the time being.

Putting on some comfortable clothes, she walked out and sat in front of the table, where her breakfast was neatly served by her mother. She noticed her father sitting outside with a bag, quietly thinking about something. Something about it felt unusual. She wondered and quietly had her food.

"Why is he carrying a bag that big today?" Y/N ate the last piece of bread and said, "Honestly I don't get the point of hunting, I've been learning it since forever."

Usually, Y/N got up around dawn when the few people in the area they lived in were asleep. And her father took her around the forest for hunting and made her learn whatever she needed to know to survive. That was the thing. Something about being "self-dependent", that no other kid had to worry about except for herself.

As she got up to leave, her mother stopped her by the door. Kneeling, she looked at her daughter's face for some time Stroking her cheeks, she said. "Remember, we always want what's best for you." That was something way out of the ordinary. Maybe her mother was coming to realize that hunting was making her different than the other kids and she was trying her best to convince her.

Y/N smiled at her mother and said, "It's just another day mama, I'll be back home before you know it!" It was probably just her overthinking, but she heard her mother sniffling. Was...her mother crying? No, it has to be the cold weather.

Y/N stood in front of her father who handed her the heavy bag. "Why is it so heavy, I mean...it's usually light papa."

Her father kept his eyes on the road, refusing to look at his daughter.

"Did...did something happen?" she asked. She had a habit to ask a lot of questions to her father whenever they were out if there was something she felt confused about. How else was she supposed to learn if she didn't understand what she was doing in the first place? Of course, she didn't get a reply most of the time and figured it out on her own. Y/N sighed knowing today was one of those days.

"Today you get your first mission," he said turning to a route he had never taken before.

"Mission?! Like..the ones you do?!" she asked, eyes gleaming with excitement. She started noticing the new area they were about to explore, as her ears caught the faint sound of water rushing by. A grin covered her face, she ran towards the sound, knowing what it was.

Careful with her steps, she reached the waterfall and looked at the edge of the hill. The sun was just about to rise, the sky looked red and faint chirps of birds were surrounding them. "Papa waterfall!!" she exclaimed and turned back.

Why was he so slow today? She looked around for a sign of her father but there was no one. Not a single trace of a human except for her.

"Papa?" she called again, "Papa is..this part of the mission? I have to figure it out or something?"

She got nothing but silence in response.

She was about to call again, when suddenly she felt a strong hit on the side of her neck, followed by a push leading her to slip and fall, injuring her head. She tried to figure out and turn back towards the direction she was hit from but...her eyes felt heavy. She felt drowsy and light-headed. Sometimes when she overworked herself during the hunting lessons, she used to feel lightheaded and fainted due to the heat at times.

But she wasn't stupid. This was different. Something has happened to her father and he's nowhere nearby. Her neck still stung as if a needle was poked in. She was sure about it. She knew how it felt whenever she had to take shots because of an injury. She tried her hardest to keep her eyes open and crawl near the trees but luck was never by her side, now was it?
