Arianell was sensitive to mana, so she recognized the energy right away, but the butler had no affinity and couldn't tell the source of the creepy feeling around.

Taranis were the family gifted with exceptional mages, and Seth was the best of them all. They focused on research, rather than business and most enchanters were able to study just thanks to the Duchess' generous sponsorship program. 

The supported individuals naturally stayed loyal to the house, and Taranis was unofficially called the clan of mages, even though their family had very few descendants, just like the royals.
