For the first time in a long while, Rochester did not know what to feel, how he should react to the impending situation, and what should or shouldn't be said. Isabelle's agony wasn't exactly unexpected but everyone had hoped that Richard would be a lot more mature following his wedding to such a noblewoman, one of admirable character who was also an heiress. Turns out Richard was always fated to tow the path of the prodigal. 

Rochester, riled to no end by the woman's report over her husband's orgy for promiscuous living, unhooked his fingers which he'd kept over the table. He could not help feeling embarrassed: Richard was a cunt—a bloody sexist at that!
