บท 9: Mission Complete

Katherine didn't speak neither did she move. Was this man actually sane, or was it all an act? She wondered. She found it really hard to believe that someone would willingly give themself up to be locked up and weaponized, or was he not aware of the witches intention yet. She was supposed to be relieved that this man had actually given himself up instead of fighting her. Yet she didn't feel joy nor relief, why did she feel this way.

The head witch might not have said it while she tasked Katherine with this mission, but Katherine knew quite well that they intended to use Eddie as replacement supposed she fails to complete her task. Although witches were the closest and nicest to the humans, Katherine knew her kind were heartless beings that would go to any extent to get what they want.

She found a way to convince herself that she was doing the right thing before proceeding to cast a binding spell on the naked mad who fell flat to the floor. Katherine pricked her index finger and allowed her blood drop on the petrified man below her. She was already informed to wipe his memory upon capture, the witches didn't want their experiment retaining the intelligence that aided it's escape.

Katherine stared down at the man beneath her, something was wrong somewhere, her binding spell was supposed to suppress his energy and render him unable to move, but why his energy suddenly surging. She repeated the spell, but it had no effect. Instinctively she leapt back just in time to evade a claw attack possibly meant to decapitate her. She knew they said he was still unstable, but being able to break through the spell of a high ranked witch such as herself couldn't be a result of instability, another party was clearly at work.

Her eyes finally caught the red markings that had suddenly become visible on her targets arm. "Mind control" She immediately recognized the spell pattern. Another witch had found this specimen before her, and clearly it wasn't an amateur. Witches operated in covens, and not all of them were at peace with each other.

The creature launched at her once more, but Katherine was quick to dodge. She attempted another binding spell but it had no effect on the now turning beast before her. She knew that once he was fully transformed that she stood no chance. She needed to find whoever was controlling her target and break off their connection.

Instead of trying ineffective spells, Katherine conjured up vines to tie the beast down before rushing towards where she sensed more magical energy. A quick sidestepped to the left prevented her from being burnt to crisps by a fireball. Her eyes finally fell upon an older witch who crouched beside a bush. She was bleeding, but Katherine felt no pity towards the individual before her.

It was clear she had battled the beast and had been wounded by it. She had probably casted a mind control spell on it, and when Katherine had suppressed the creatures energy with her binding spell, this witch had utilized the opportunity to make the beast go berserk.

She raised her hand to kill off the pathetic witch before her, but was interrupted by a kick to the side. The bound up beast had escaped and was probably here to defend it's master. Katherine neglected her injuries and immediately rose to counter yet another fire ball. She used her bleeding mouth to her advantage to further fortify the already weakened barrier she had set up earlier. As long as that barrier was up, nobody could leave this place.

This fight was currently in her favor, it was clear that the other witch was running low on stamina. It was already impressive enough that someone her age was still alive after having their guts almost spilled out. There was no way she would win. Once again, roots erupted from the forest floor and bound the beast up. Katherine had added a little extra ingredient to this spell. They weren't just ordinary roots, they weren't called Hell vines for jokes.

These vines possessed the ability to drain both the life force of its caster and anything caught in it's grasp. Katherine didn't really care, it was Eddie's life against this creature's capture and she would easily lay down her life to protect Eddie. She commanded the vines towards the probably paralyzed lady, and with no means to escape the wanting roots, she had been caught.

It was a shame she won't be able to find out the coven that was against them. Whoever or whatever that expired within the vine's grasps were instant reduced to ashes. She would kill this witch first, and the mind control would be undone once she was dead.

Katherine collapsed to the floor, only managing to hold onto consiousness by a thin strand. Her target was back to it's human form, and it was unconscious, while her opponent was already one with the wind. She dragged her numb body towards the naked man and held onto his hand. Her hesitation to capture the man earlier was the cause of all this. If she'd taken him back immediately he submitted, she probably wouldn't be struggling for her life right now.

Using the remaining reserves of her energy, she teleported the two of them back to the coven's headquarters where she had been informed to bring it. She had succeeded in escaping death this time, as well as saving Eddie. She knew the witches had an eye out for him, and Katherine had no idea when they'll run out of patience.
