He knew the personalities of Corrado Gherardi and Wolfran von Eichenberg because they were in the Vatican intelligence files, to which he had access.

The Colonel had already been wandering incessantly through the passages for hours and was desperate to find any vestige of his prey. Furthermore, the confinement and the stale air, accompanied by loneliness, were causing him a state of agitation due to anxiety.
