From a strictly geographical point of view, Montserrat Mountain is a Natural Park in Catalonia, Spain, located 18 miles northwest of Barcelona. It has a perimeter contour of 16 miles and is a rocky set of calcareous composition, in which the action of the waters over the millennia has pierced an infinity of tunnels and enclosures in the bowels of the mountain. The site has enjoyed the status of a Natural Park since 1987. This simple geological description does not allow the mystical significance that has been assigned to it over the centuries to be assumed in advance. For many within Christianity, Montserrat is a sacred mountain charged with history, and as we will see later, outside of Christianity there have also been those who have assigned it a strong esoteric character.
