The security door opened, and the woman didn't notice any hostile behavior from Lin Yue. With her rifle pointed downward, Lin Yue addressed her gently, "Is it just you here? Do you have anything you need to gather?"
"If you'd like, I can take you to the Sixth Building, our gathering place. We can provide safety for survivors who aren't capable of self-defense."
"If you don't want to go, that's fine, but I need to make a basic registration first."
Lin Yue was strictly following her task protocols while trying to convey her goodwill.
"You're here to rescue us?" The woman widened her eyes in disbelief, hastily asking, "How many of you are there? Has the main force entered the city yet? How long until we're liberated?"
"There's no main force. Our numbers are limited," Lin Yue answered patiently. "Right now, we can only ensure the safety of survivors in this neighborhood."
"Ah… so it's not the rescue force entering the city…"
The woman's face fell, disappointment clear in her expression. The salvation she had hoped for—the arrival of a grand military force—hadn't come. Instead, it was just a woman in military uniform… Oh, and a male soldier standing beside her.
"So, what if… we don't go with you?"
A boy behind the woman spoke up, his voice timid but direct. "You're not the People's Liberation Army. I don't trust you."
"I'm sorry, but the neighborhood is under military control. All survivors need to be gathered at the Sixth Building for unified management and distribution."
Li Yang spoke in a deep tone, not allowing Lin Yue to explain. "This is an order signed by the Commander. We can offer safety, but to ensure the safety of more survivors and the Commander, we cannot allow instability to threaten that safety!"
Lin Yue remained silent, understanding that Li Yang thought she was being too gentle with this mother and child, potentially hindering the mission's efficiency.
"Will you come with us?"
Li Yang asked again. The woman hesitated but nodded, gritting her teeth. "They're all soldiers. It doesn't matter. I'll go with you!"
"After all, we don't have any food left here… Can you provide us with something to eat? Do you distribute food?"
"We do, but we don't give food for free."
Li Yang nodded. "It's a system of labor distribution—no one gets anything for free. Resources in the shelter are limited."
"Of course, we won't make you do dangerous tasks. The most you'll be asked to do is cleaning or strengthening the wall defenses."
"Okay, okay, I understand."
The woman nodded repeatedly. "The country is in trouble, and you've got it tough too. We'll follow your arrangements, follow the distribution."
"Good."
Li Yang nodded and was about to speak when suddenly, the door next door creaked open.
"Whoosh!"
Li Yang reacted immediately, gun raised and aimed.
"Don't shoot! Don't shoot!"
A shirtless, plump man emerged from the neighboring house, his hands raised in surrender. "Comrades! I'm a survivor too! Don't leave me behind!"
Li Yang frowned. "You've been eavesdropping?"
"What do you mean eavesdropping? What kind of comrade talks like that?"
The fat man rolled his eyes in irritation. "Aren't you here to save me? I'm just cooperating, not making your job difficult. Isn't that good enough?"
Li Yang was momentarily at a loss for words.
"Well, he's not wrong," Li Yang muttered, slightly dumbfounded.
The man was indeed being proactive, saving Li Yang the trouble of knocking on his door.
"Alright, Lin Yue, let's continue with the search," Li Yang said, turning to her. Lin Yue nodded, leading the team to continue their work.
Over the next three hours, Lin Yue found a considerable number of survivors in the neighborhood.
In the first building alone, there were 25 people. At least half of the shelters had opened their doors.
Of course, their situation wasn't much better—most were short on supplies and struggling to get by.
After finishing the first building, Lin Yue led the group back to the shelter.
Jiang Xiaoci had already arranged for Li Jie and her team to wait near the city walls. When Lin Yue returned, Li Jie's eyes lit up, and she waved enthusiastically at the survivors following behind.
"Come, come, line up!"
"Everyone needs to register—family status, members, profession, age, etc. Don't leave anything out!"
"No one can hide their shelter abilities; that will mess up the later arrangements. If anyone's caught hiding something, they'll be expelled immediately!"
Li Jie called out, and a few women in the crowd noticed her.
"Hmm? Isn't that Li Jie?"
"Look! It's really Li Jie! Who would've thought she'd be here too!"
"I told you the army was coming! Li Jie, what's her role? She used to be from the neighborhood committee; of course, she'd be here to handle things."
"Hey, Li Jie, why didn't you say something earlier? We've been starving at home for days!"
It seemed many survivors knew Li Jie, and they greeted her warmly. Li Jie was practically glowing with joy, coordinating and organizing with ease. It seemed as though she had
