บท 95: Chapter 95: Missions
(Night…)
As we were eating at the dinner table, I said, "I'm going to go on a mission tomorrow. So who's going to accompany me?"
Scarlet gently wiped the paper towel to her mouth, then said, "I'm sorry, but I'm going to be busy tomorrow. My father and grandfather are going to celebrate our victory in the last rank battles. Apparently, they thought that we were going to lose, that's why they prepared so late. Hmph, they underestimate me too much!"
"Hmm? Why haven't you invited us then?" I asked her.
She turned her face away, and said, "Hmph, you think I would've forgotten about that? I'm still making it. The letters just need to be beautifully made!"
I sighed, 'Since when have you been a perfectionist?' I said in my thoughts.
I turned to Randy, "How about you?"
"Ah, me too! I just remembered that I also have to do something tomorrow! I finally scored a date with this girl called Mai Arvento. She confessed to me yesterday, saying that she has liked me since the day we won the rank battles!" Randy said, just after swallowing the food in his mouth.
I deadpanned, "Shouldn't you be getting ready for your date? And did you forget about it?"
He scratched the back of his head, sheepishly, and said, "Ehehehe, I was too focused on my bomb research that I nearly forgot about it."
I turned to Alice, and asked, "How about you, Alice? Can you go with me tomorrow?"
She fidgeted for a little, before saying, "I-I'm s-sorry, A-Auguste. I p-promised a g-girl from t-the l-library that I-I will be g-going to t-tutor her a-about m-math. A-Apparently, h-her little s-sister i-in the c-city a-academy for kids n-needs h-her to l-learn advance m-math b-because t-there will b-be a s-school hero's day t-there."
The academy is located somewhere on the upper right side of the city, but I've never visited it. It's filled with intelligent scholars but they are also cultivators, albeit they've never been in a fight. It's probably just for self-defense once they go out of the city and into the surface. A level 10 Mana Gathering Cultivator is more than enough to battle 100 trained soldiers from the empires, so it's totally understandable for them to train in mana cultivation.
I nodded, I basically got what she meant. The older sister is probably the little sister's hero, meaning she'll have to attend this "School Hero's Day", and have to learn advanced mathematics because it's somehow needed in that. Either way, I'm just happy Alice is making friends with other people. And since her friend is a girl, it's even better! No man shalt ever touch my sweet Alice!
"A-Are y-you m-mad a-at m-me, A-Auguste?" She asked me, a bit teary eyed.
I shook my head, and smiled, "No, I'm just happy you're finally making a friend other than us. Anyway, I could probably ask other people from other teams to team up with me, though it'll be a bit hard since I'm just a toddler and all that," I said.
"Hmm, maybe you could. Like Alice, you don't make any other friends, except for us. As a kid, you should have lots of fun with other kids!" Randy said with enthusiasm.
I sighed, and said, "Those kids would only get hurt. I don't play gently, I play rough."
Looking a bit surprised, Randy said, "Woah there cowboy, I didn't mean it that way!"
I was confused as to why he said that, until I realized what I said implied.
"No, wait, not like that! NOT LIKE THAT! I mean, I don't pla—ah screw it, just finish your plates and wash them on your own. I'm going upstairs to my room!"
(Scene Change)
There are two pavilions in the C-Class district; the Heavenly Pavilion and the Mission Pavilion.
In the Heavenly Pavilion, a disciple can buy many things from the sect if they have sect points and they could sell stuff to earn said points. Each of my teammates has 300 Sect Points, which we received after winning the Rank Battles. A single Mortal Weapon from the Heavenly Pavilion can cost a disciple about 50 sect points, which is a bit too expensive since a normal mission would amount to about the same as the price.
But here is the real kicker; missions that involve killing disciples from enemy sects could earn a single disciple hundreds of Sect Points, depending on how many enemy disciples they've killed.
And in the Mission Pavilion, the missions given there are ranked by their difficulty from E to S. E-Rank missions are simple; it just involves picking up herbs and such. Sometimes it could be about cleaning an old woman's backyard. D-Rank is about the same but with some difficulties, such as hunting animals for pellets and hides.
C-Rank is more difficult than the other two because it involves the disciple going outside of the sect, which is good and all, until the disciple would have to face the unreal unfairness of the outside world and the suffering that goes along with it. These missions are usually about killing some nearby bandits, or protecting the caravan that delivers some food to the sect.
B-Rank, however, involves higher risk missions such as killing the enemy scouts or hunting for enemy disciples. And it could also be about assassinating some higher ranked people in enemy sects. These missions are incredibly dangerous as the disciple could be tortured to spill the secrets of the sect. And female disciples have it worse since they would be used as play toys for the enemy sect.
And it doesn't help that many female cultivators are pretty in some way or another because the mana inside their bodies cleanses their external looks, making them pleasing to the eyes. Male cultivators are the same but their mana focuses more on their physical strength rather than their looks.
Then, there's the A-Rank missions. The missions in this category are usually given out by the sect, however, they are only available to A-Class and S-Class Disciples. These missions are for taking out strong enemies, such as an Adult Drake that has grown too powerful for the sects to control or a Chimera that are only found in the deepest parts of the tall mountain peaks. But most often than not, these missions are about killing enemy elders that are out of their respective sects.
But even then, S-Rank missions are way out of reach for normal disciples because only S-Class Disciples are able to do those missions, and they are classified. To put it simply, these missions were deemed by the sect to be way too dangerous for the majority of the disciples.
And the thing about these missions? No one knows what they are. Except for my master, the elders, and those S-Class Disciples, the majority are kept from finding out what those missions are. Rumors say that if the S-Rank missions were to be revealed, all the dark secrets of the sect would be spilled. And some say that these missions are for things such as genocide or slaughtering a bunch of people.
Anyway, enough about that, I am currently standing in front of the tall red building in front of me, with a large logo that clearly says "Mission Pavilion".
I saw some disciples coming in and out, with many of them holding a piece of paper. Those papers are the missions they've just taken, and I realized that most of them were taking the less dangerous missions, like E-Rank or D-Rank.
I guess they do have common sense.

Miko_Sayaki Some of you may have hated the Rank Battles Arc, but let me tell you... the feelings are mutual.
Anyway, I'm probably not going to update for the rest of the week for work reasons. I'll make up with you guys by posting 2 chapters in monday, if any of you guys are still here with me.
And about the decade time skip... sorry, there's still another arc for Auguste's character development. Just bear with me, it'll end soon.
