To Chasm’s surprise, Varnas succeed in getting another three sotons out of the Dagerstanteens. Their new alien owner, Rhylent, bought the energy rope and secured the band around his wrists. The whole time Rhylent tied his hands together, a muscle in his jaw twitched with annoyance. Even though the alien was clearly irritated, his tentacles never pushed or shoved. He was gentle as he made the bindings tight but not so rough as to dig into Chasm’s skin.

That was a first.

When Rhylent was finished, Peltratria then drew the rope around Norwell’s wrists before Chasm and Norwell were let out of their cage. Both Rhylent and Peltratria were more patient than any alien Chasm had ever served. As Chasm stood in front of Rhylent, he tried to figure out why. He’d learned from a young age that the faster he could figure out what an alien wanted, the fewer beatings he had to endure.
