70% Stepmother to the Third Protagonist / Chapter 21: Hug

บท 21: Hug

Han Wei frowned as he felt something heavy pressing down on him. Waking up earlier than usual, he discovered that it was his father, Han Chen, who was squishing him. Startled at first, Han Wei quickly gathered his bearings, carefully slipping out from beneath Han Chen's arms without waking him. He quietly made his way to his own room, already excited to start playing with his toys. Neither Han Chen nor Yang Liu noticed the little boy's departure from their bed.

Moments later, as Han Chen subconsciously sensed the absence of the small, warm body in his arms, he furrowed his brow, his hands reaching out in search of that comforting warmth. As if instinctively, he found something soft to hold once more, pulling it close as the sweet, familiar scent filled his nose. It wasn't long before he drifted back into a deep sleep.

Yang Liu, however, began to stir. A wave of heat surrounded her, making her feel as though she were trapped in the embrace of a human furnace. She wrinkled her nose and slowly blinked her eyes open, only to find Han Chen's face inches from her own, his breath soft against her cheek. Instantly, a flush of warmth spread across her face, her thoughts racing. Since when did he come back from his trip? Why am I in his arms?

Her heart pounded in her chest, her gaze darting around the room as she tried to locate Han Wei. Not seeing him anywhere, a new wave of questions flooded her mind. Where's Han Wei? But before she could process her thoughts, she felt Han Chen shift slightly, his body moving closer. Panic set in, and Yang Liu squeezed her eyes shut, pretending to still be asleep.

Han Chen, still half-asleep himself, unconsciously tightened his grip on Yang Liu, pulling her closer, his face pressing against her neck as he inhaled her scent. For a moment, it felt peaceful. But as his mind began to clear, something felt off. His eyes slowly fluttered open, and to his surprise, Yang Liu was peacefully nestled in his arms. Startled, he bolted upright, his heart racing. Where's Han Wei? What is going on? His mind spiraled with questions, each one more confusing than the last.

Beside him, Yang Liu lay frozen, her thoughts racing just as quickly. Why does he keep holding me? Her heart thumped loudly in her chest, but she didn't dare move.

Han Chen glanced down at Yang Liu again, his mind struggling to process the situation. She looked peaceful, soft tendrils of hair framing her face, and for a moment, he found himself lost in how beautiful she looked. Quickly shaking his head, he cleared his thoughts. No, he told himself. Focus. He carefully released her from his hold and climbed out of bed, heading to the bathroom to clear his mind.

Once inside, Han Chen glanced at himself in the mirror, a flush rising to his cheeks when he realized the state he was in. His body had reacted to being so close to Yang Liu, and frustration bubbled up within him. Letting out a long sigh, he turned the shower knob, opting for an icy cold rinse to wake himself up and cool down.

The sound of running water filled the bathroom, and in the bedroom, Yang Liu cautiously opened her eyes. She blinked a few times, trying to shake off her grogginess. Sitting up slowly, she thought to herself, This guy is way too handsome to be this close first thing in the morning. Her cheeks burned with embarrassment, but she quickly shook it off, deciding not to dwell on it.

Minutes later, Han Chen emerged from the shower, feeling more refreshed, a towel draped over his neck. As he stepped out of the bathroom, he noticed Yang Liu was now fully awake, sitting up in bed. For a brief moment, their eyes met, and he felt a surge of awkwardness sweep over him. Struggling to keep his composure, he managed a shy, "Good morning," his voice slightly hoarse.

Yang Liu, who had expected some sort of sheepish greeting, smiled to herself. Seeing Han Chen so flustered gave her a small boost of confidence. "Good morning!" she responded brightly. After a beat, she added, "What time did you come back yesterday?"

Han Chen, now standing in front of the wardrobe, began to pull on his clothes. He tied the necktie Yang Liu had given him not long ago, an act that didn't go unnoticed by her. Her heart warmed at the sight, and she couldn't help but smile. He glanced over at her, replying slowly, "I got back around midnight. You and Han Wei were already asleep."

Yang Liu nodded in understanding. She picked up her phone from the nightstand and glanced at the time. "It's already 9:00 A.M.," she said, glancing over at him. "Are you going to have breakfast with us?"

Han Chen froze for a moment, contemplating his response. Usually, he was swamped with work in the mornings, but something inside him shifted. He wanted to stay. "Sure," he replied, his voice softer than usual.

As he finished getting dressed, Yang Liu smiled to herself. Unbeknownst to little Han Wei, his innocent decision to sneak off and play early had unknowingly nudged his parents just a little closer together that morning.
