I walked into my apartment, exhausted from the adventure I had from desolate streets, and collapsed onto the couch, dazzled by the sudden turn of this unreal situation.
I don't know if my mind was playing a prank on me, or it was me, too exhausted, that made me ignore my surroundings.
But as I lifted my head up, I was shocked to see a woman sitting on the dark luxurious couch in my living room, opposite me, seemingly out of place.
'Hmm?? Did I start hallucinating and summon a waifu character to keep my sanity sane??'
Is what my jumbly head thought, when I saw her appearance.
She was dressed in a flowing white gown, her blonde silvery long hair cascading down her back like a river of pale gold. Her skin was porcelain smooth, her features ethereal, and her eyes sparkled like diamonds in the dim light, seemingly containing a universe within.
She was sitting on an antique, beautifully carved luxurious couch, reading a book, as if oblivious to my presence.
I felt like I had stumbled into a dream, a surreal moment that defied logic and explanation.
That's why, those kind of silly thoughts appeared when I saw her for the first time.
As I sat there, frozen in shock, she looked up and caught my eye.
Her gaze was piercing, yet gentle, and for a moment, I felt like she caught a glimpse into my very soul. But I don't know why, something about her gentle gaze was disturbing, seemingly containing a caged chaos that could be unleashed anytime.
'Yeah, it's her aura, I don't know why, but her aura made me somehow unpleasant.... It was the same like how you have seen ghosts, you don't know if they were real or not…'
"Ah, welcome back" she said, her sweet and melodious voice woke me up in my dreamy state.
"I've been waiting for you."
I was taken aback by her nonchalance and calm demeanor in the face of my stunned silence.
'Who was this woman, and how did she end up in my apartment?, and girl, why did you act like you own the house here?'
"Who are you?" I asked, my voice slightly trembling with a hint of confusion in its note.
She smiled, giving a gentle, enigmatic smile that seemed to hint at secrets beyond my understanding.
"My name is Sariel," she said, her voice dripping with an otherworldly quality.
Giving her name shortly, she began moving her judgemental eyes upon me, her gaze piercing, stripping me bare from the castle like personality I always build myself to hide my true weak, and cowardly self.
Sariel's eyes seemed to bore into my soul, as if she could see every thought, every fear, and every desire that lurked within my mind.
As if being gazed by someone who are above the food chain, beyond so many level at that, I felt a shiver run down my spine as I heard her begin to speak.
"Alex, I know you're curious about me," she said, her words dripping with an otherworldly confidence as her voice was like a gentle breeze on a summer's day.
"Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Sariel, and I am the personification of the Tome of Babylon." I felt like I was staring into the abyss, my mind reeling with the implications of her words. Not because I understood anything about the thing she said, but because the words seemed to have a hint of charm in my ears, which confused me for a second.
'The Tome of Babylon? The name of Babylon it's not strange for me, but a tome?,,, hmmm..'
"What do you mean?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. Currently my head is a mess from the strange phenomenon that happened in my city. All living souls vanished without a trace and this dead silence atmosphere makes me think that this has not only happened in my city, probably.
Shaking off the uneasy feeling that encroached me slowly, I began to pay attention to Sariel's uncanny face once again, wanting to get more information about her true identity.
Seemingly reading my emotion and desire at ease, Sariel began to smile.
"The Tome of Babylon is an ancient text, one that has been lost in the sands of time. It contains the secrets of the universe, the knowledge of the gods and demons who shaped the countless world, creating life within." I felt like I was drowning in her words, my mind struggling to comprehend the sheer scale of what she was saying.
"And you're... its personification?" I asked, my voice laced with skepticism.
In turn of my surreal and doubtful words, she laughed amusingly at me. Sariel's laughter was like music, a gentle, ethereal sound that seemed to dance on the wind.
"I am the embodiment of the Tome's power, Alex. I hold its secrets, its knowledge, and it's magic within me." I felt like I was staring into the face of a goddess, a being of immense power and wisdom. But there was something more, something that lurked beneath the surface of her words, something that she wasn't telling me. I know she held some core information about her, keeping it hidden from me.
"What do you want from me?... forget it, by chance, all of this ridiculous situation happened in my city, is that also your doing?" I asked, my voice cracked, seemingly starting to believe that the woman with bewildering appearance opposite me was a true divine being, holding tremendous power who can wipe humanity off within a mere time of hours.
Somehow, her existence itself is already surreal.
The eerily monstrous aura radiated from her makes me feel like I'm just a tiny dust within the vast universe who can be toyed by her whenever she wants.
Ignoring my unsettled feeling, I begin to pay attention to her once again.
I saw her smile gently as she began to move her gaze to the window, seemingly overseeing the whole city with her bright eyes. "Actually, your hunch is right... the humanity in your world is gone. Not only this city, but all over the world." Disbelief, my eyes constrict into a dot, as a tremendous fear grabs me tightly.
"The universe you're currently residing in is decaying, Alex. It's a realm without balance, where chaos threatens to consume everything." Hearing the continuation of her words, a surge of confusion consumed me, as I felt my mind racing with the implications of her words.
"What do you mean?" hearing my question, Sariel's eyes seemed to bore into mine, as if she could see into my very soul.
"In other universes, there are beings known as gods. They're from a higher level of civilization, and they hold the secrets of the universe. They're the ones who keep the balance in most countless universes, by keeping the forces of chaos in check." I felt like all the words coming from her mouth were beyond my understanding..
"God? Chaos? What kind of concept is that? In the first place, all the things she told me only can be found in some fantasy stories?'
But after seeing what happened with the city, for some unknown reason, I can't shrug off her words in my current situation.
And so, my expression turned serious, as I started to believe that she was not trying to tell me a fairy tale to entertain me.
"What about this universe then?" I asked, my voice low, holding the disbelief I had about the seer grave situation I am currently in.
Seeing me start to take her words seriously, Sariel's expression turned nonchalant, her eyes still calmed as she began dropping a nuclear bomb like information to me once again.
"This universe is different, Alex. Have you not realized that you don't have any presence of god here? They called this kind of universe a forgotten land And so The gods from the higher universe moved all of humanity in this world to a new realm. After all, humans are crucial for them, for whatever their power are involved with the existence of mankind, but somehow... they forgot to include you in it."
I felt like I had been punched in the gut, my mind racing with the implications of her words.
'I was the only one left behind? Did the gods take me as a luggage that could be forgotten when they try to go on vacation?'
But I don't know why, when she mentioned these almighty "beings" forgetting about me, she seemed like not telling me the truth.
Still, if that really was the case, it's just too much!
"Why?" I asked, my voice laced with anger and a hint of a little fear.
Sariel's eyes seemed to bore into mine, as if she could see into my very soul and began to disassemble the torrent of my current emotion, a small smile escaped her thin beautiful lips.
"I don't know, Alex. Maybe you're a special being that could hide from their omniscience sense or maybe you just born under the unlucky star, but worry not, meeting me are the biggest luck you never imagine of" giving a gentle but eerie smile, Sariel stood up from her fancy couch, and start pointing her finger into my forehead, her slim and white finger seemingly drilling easily to my brain without resistance.
Seeing this scene, my back suddenly drenched into sweats.
With a disbelieved expression, I began to feel my mind suddenly churned, as an unknown energy started shredding my very existence into shreds.
'I knew it... all the unsettled feeling I felt all this time is because I can't read what this woman's true intention is from the start... damn enigma...'
And so, I began to feel my soul leaving my body slowly, as the darkness painted my vision blind.
