บท 46: 46

Perhaps Pyrrha had read one too many manga for her own good.

When she'd found herself about to face Hu ChoRok again for the Victor's Match as the winner of the Winners Brackets, versus ChoRok (obviously) the winner of the Losers Brackets for the Champion's Laurels, she'd expected some sort of… fated battle.

She knew that the final confrontation between the Winner's Bracket Champion and the Losers Bracket Champion was often called a 'victory lap' and that it rarely ended in an upset with the Losers Bracket Champion taking it back, but she'd still expected… more.

Something extraordinary to change the flow of battle. Something heartstopping and pulse pounding or…

Something.

But aside from him getting a good punch in against her nose (which hurt) and the match pausing twice, once from a false foul call and she'd been even flagged once for a foul (which she hadn't) that forced her to evade for thirty seconds without attacking back, she'd won the match surprisingly easily.

Ok, evading shotgun shots wasn't easy. It was awful. She had to brace and shield herself with Akouo plenty. Actually it had gotten a bit dicey as he tried to pin her into a corner.

But her Aura had fallen into the yellow while his had landed in the red, ending the match.

It was… empty and anticlimactic.

The moves that Pyrrha had gleaned from Hyana had given her the edge she'd needed to solidly win the fight despite the oddness of this match.

Honestly she was sure that Hyana would have won against ChuRok if she'd had more time to recover her Aura after her fight against Pyrrha. That was a shame. It honestly would have been much more fun to fight Hyana again. But with the weird calls today she might not have won if she'd fought the older girl from Argus.

But her opponent had lost and she had won.

Cameras flashed again and again as she held up her heavy, golden trophy made of polished brass. She now wore a wreath of fresh green laurels placed upon her brow, the green clashing against her crimson hair, but she couldn't help but to smile victoriously.

"Do you have any last words, Miss Nikkos? Any celebratory plans, a message to your new fans, or even a message from your sponsors?"

She blinked owlishly at a mic that was shoved into her face.

"Oh. I…" Her victory speech. Oh no. She'd forgotten it all in the heat of victory and the frustration of her final, oh so disappointing battle. Oops? "I'm overjoyed. Today… feels sort of like a dream." She admitted honestly. "I think… I think I'm just going to just have a small celebration with a friend. Something quiet to let all the excitement wind down with."

The flash of cameras and the shouting of reporters were all drowned out by the pounding of blood rushing up into her ears.

Sneaking away for a Sunday evening was easy enough with Team STRQ lending a hand, Raven helping cover him as she 'dragged him away' for some help with something as she promised to watch over him while shoving that actual responsibility on Qrow who would be in the neighborhood.

Raven had been paid in some fancy chocolate dipped fruits alongside some large dinner bentos to share with Summer and Taiyang while Qrow would be accompanying him as a chaperone. Honestly he was kind of the only choice as Taiyang would likely crack dad jokes all night, Raven was a NO, and Summer would get all overbearing aunt mode. Plus he was plenty happy to be getting to dig into some of the victory feast that Jaune was planning for his new friend and her family that was currently keeping her.

Juniper seemed plenty pleased with himself, humming as he closed his eyes and 'slept' as he rested the day away.

His brother was less and less active than when he'd been a younger child. He could tell that lingering with Jaune the way he did was taxing somehow for his Big Brother, but Jaune didn't have the courage or heart to let Juniper go. Nor did Juniper seem to wish to leave him, instead entering more hibernation-like states to maintain himself.

Years ago when Jaune had entered Sanctum his brother promised that he'd meet someone that would end up being a friend, only for his brother to add the addendum that it would take a few more years.

Then suddenly his brother who rarely asked anything of Jaune nowadays had recommended that Jaune come by and see a tournament where a girl his age from Argus was competing?

Yeah, Jaune was a bit of a moron, but even he could see the obvious hints his brother left for him.

He was just glad that when his Big Brother Juniper trailed after Hyouka Kamasaka to listen in on the aftermath of her battle with Pyrrha he'd properly overheard the conversation between the girl and her sponsor.

It seemed Copper-Webb Real Estate was a front for the Spiders, but that there was currently too much attention from the Circuit to act on any sense of revenge without attracting the wrong kind of attention.

Frankly, while there had been some money lost from his and Qrow's outlandish bet that Pyrrha would be the champion, pretty much nobody had bet on her winning against Hyouka (banking on a small but easy payout) and, so the Crime Families in charge of bookkeeping recouped enough that they weren't immediately going to be an issue either.

Simply put, taking revenge at the moment wasn't cost effective and thus currently of no consequence. Especially when it seemed nobody was allowed to interfere too harshly with the Circuits themselves, otherwise inviting other factions to use it as Casus Belli to engage in escalated conflict and nobody seemed to want that.

The Houses and Crime Families were apparently somewhat ruthless, but they abided by some rules.

It especially helped when Pyrrha wasn't even a representative of any of the Houses or Crime Families. Plus they seemed to blame the Hyouka girl far more than they did Pyrrha, which had left the girl pleading and promising that she'd do better.

It all left Jaune with an uncomfortable feeling. There wasn't anything he could act on without trying to take on the whole gang, but that wasn't exactly something he could reasonably pull off right now. All he could do was keep an eye on what little he could. It didn't feel like anybody was going to kill her off, even if it was clear she'd be punished in some manner, so he held himself back.

He swore that once he was older he wouldn't let himself be held back like this. He'd go out and protect people like a Hero properly should. He'd never let himself forsake anyone like this again. He hated letting bad people like the Spiders run wild like this.

One day, he swore to himself.

Still, tonight was meant for celebration, not his musings.

Jaune slipped on his beanie, pulled down to his brows, and kept his tail covered by a black haori coat with soft yellow trimmings. He held a small congratulatory bouquet in his hands as he and Qrow fell back into the feeling of cold tendrils licking at their bodies.

"Kiddo, your way of teleporting feels so weird."

"I didn't choose it, Uncle Qrow." Jaune rolled his eyes, "Or I'd pick something else too."

"H-hello!" A girl's voice squeaked out in the small living room that he appeared into. "A-are you… Jaune?"

Jaune smiled brightly at Pyrrha Nikkos, his newest friend (hopefully). At least she would be if everything went well, right?

"Heya! That's me! Congratulations on your win, Pyrrha!" He presented her with the bouquet. "I, uh…" He stared at the flowers in his hands, feeling suddenly kind of dumb, "well I'm going to be honest, I have no idea why people give flowers as a celebration, but here you are!"

"Oh, uh, thank you!" She smiled a bit shyly, accepting the flowers in her arms before looking down at them awkwardly. "They're… very pretty! I… don't know what to do with these either."

The two of them stared at each other for a few seconds before bursting out into laughter.

"I, uh, thank you for the flowers. It's very kind of you."

"Ah, I'm just sorry that they're just kind of in the way." Jaune rubbed the back of his neck, "Shoot. Uh, hold up."

Jaune looked over to an empty side table by a couch, pulling a SR Rarity Item: Ming Dynasty Vase (it was the only non-normal rarity vase which all looked plastic and tacky, plus what did he need a vase for?) and placing the fine white china (with decorative royal blue paintings of a pair of birds resting on a branch with a multitude of decorative leaves and other accents) on top of it.

"We can put it in this!" He smiled triumphantly, turning to see Pyrrha looking at the vase with wide eyes and Qrow just silently laughing (he thought the vase was way too expensive looking and was a bad move) with a hand over his mouth. "What?"

"I- that looks expensive." Pyrrha looked a smidge uncomfortable. Shoot, Qrow was right, huh?

"Eh. I didn't buy it, I got it for free" Jaune reassured. It was a dumb free daily pull from the Gacha a month or so back that was a scam of an SR Item. "Your uncle can keep it as a gift. Or sell it, or what have you. I don't care about it."

He frowned, realizing that Pyrrha still was very uncomfortable either way before laughing as he read deeper into her shyness.

"And uh, don't worry about maybe thinking I might be a girl, y'know in case you thought that." He remembered all of a sudden that his ability to read people's feelings and intent could sometimes come off as… intrusive. Better to make it sound like a lucky guess. "Cuz I know I'm pretty good at cooking and my sisters say I… look good in a dress? Wait that not-"

Pyrrha couldn't help but let out a snort of laughter before a hand rose to cover her mouth, looking embarrassed.

She just wordlessly handed her bouquet back over to him, allowing him to unwrap the decorative paper wrapping and place the flowers inside, pulling out a small jug of drinking water and pouring it into the vase. She did stare a bit curiously at his ability to seemingly pull out objects from his Inventory, which he'd seen in a self recording just looked as if he was snatching out matter from thin air.

"Well… that solves that!" Jaune paused awkwardly. Gosh what was wrong? It was easy talking over the post-its and he was fine with his own friends… actually when was… the last time he'd tried to proactively make a friend?

Hmm. Actually… had he ever proactively made- no there was Ren. He'd definitely proactively made a friend with Ren, but the rest just kind of suddenly had come out of nowhere.

…actually did that count when Ren pretty much got adopted into his family immediately afterwards? He… hmmm. Emerald! He'd actually chosen to become her friend even though it had started as him just wanting someone he could practice teaching so he could feel more confident lecturing at Atlas! So he wasn't hopeless, just… super inexperienced! That… he shouldn't be proud of that. That was kinda bad, right?

"So I'm going to be completely honest, I have, uh, next to no idea how to make new friends." Jaune puckered his lip, twisting it to the right side of his face as he chewed on it. "I… kinda just realized that I've just always mostly kinda stumbled into it at best. Is… is that ok?"

"Oh, no that's fine! I don't have any friends at all-I MEAN UH- no it's more like I don't have any friends that I'm close to, or rather, that they're all more akin to acquaintances from my father's company but, their children to be-"

"Ok, ok, sheesh. This cute kiddie stuff is funny, but you two met up because you want to be friends right? Just stop dancing around it and fully introduce yourself properly and shake hands or somethin." Qrow grumbled as he sipped from his rose marked hip flask, looking both amused and tired at the same time. "I'm just here to chaperone ya and mooch off Jaune's food, don't make me play counselor like I'm back teachin' at Beacon."

Jaune flushed in embarrassment as Pyrrha on the other hand looked surprised.

"Are you a Professor at Beacon Academy?"

"Uncle Qrow acts as one of the Combat Instructors at Beacon. He's really strong." Jaune bragged with his chest puffed, "He's a graduate from one of their best teams too!"

"That's impressive! Wow!" Pyrrha looked at Qrow with some stars in her eyes, "I've heard that Beacon is the best of the four Huntsmen Colleges!"

"Pft. Ok, really. Stop avoiding the issue, weird little brats." Qrow laughed, leaning over to ruffle his head again.

"Ah, Qrow my beanie!"

"Oops."

One of his long rabbit ears flopped out from Qrows rough tussling as Jaune quickly pulled the black beanie back over his head, tucking the ear under quickly.

Pyrrha stared at him, thoughts flooding through her head as she made sense of what she'd seen. He always struggled to understand people when they flashed through a bunch of ideas all at once.

"Jaune? Wh-what's your full name?" "Sorry I didn't say-"

"Hmm?" "Hmm?"

"Oh, uh." Jaune scratched his cheek. "My name is Jaune Arc. I-I go to Sanctum. So most of the year I'm in Argus, just like you. It's one of the reasons I tried to reach out to you and all. But, uhm, I'm a Faunus and I hope that doesn't make you uncomfortable and all…"

Which was true. Honestly if it wasn't for being guided towards her by his brother, he would have at least tried to say hi as she wasn't one of the other Sanctum kids that either pretended to like him but looked down on him for being a Faunus or only wanted to be friends because they wanted something from him.

And Hyana Athenol was out because Jaune already knew that she didn't like Faunus from seeing her at Sanctum. She wasn't directly malicious, but she thought they were barely above animals. She also didn't get along very well with Clarent as a result.

It was why he didn't actually hang out with his upperclassman Kamina much even if they got along well. That guy kept thinking everything Jaune said and did had more meaning than it did and it got exhausting. Still he was the closest thing Jaune had to a casual friend at Sanctum.

"Oh, that doesn't bother me at all! I-I just tried searching up your name the other day and found your music, which was amazing, I just didn't… well…"

"You thought I was a girl and I couldn't be the same person? Ha ha." Jaune giggled, knowing his existence was definitely abnormal, "Don't worry, I know I'm a bit all over the place. But once again, I'm Jaune Arc and it's nice to finally meet you!"

He held out his right hand, finding Pyrrha's hand quickly (slightly desperately) grasping his own as the girl gave him a brilliant smile.

Her Aura was yarrow roots rubbing against his fingers, the scent comparable to damp earth and pine needles. The sound of a fine metal edge, something running along a fine sword, ran up his arm.

"I-I'm happy to meet you too!" Pyrrha bowed as she shook his hand. "I'm Pyrrha Nikkos!"

Jaune just found himself bowing too.

"I'm Jaune Ar- wait. I already said that."

They shared another laugh, this time a lot less awkward and stressed than before.

Pyrrha hummed happily as she had a mouthful of sweet and sour pork with a spoonful of veggie fried rice.

"Gosh, you should just start your own restaurant." She sighed with a satisfied sigh. "It would do amazing."

Her new friend Jaune just chuckled, his hand reaching out to a pair of tongs to pull a few sliced pieces of juicy slow smoked ribs to his plate, lathered in a sweet and smoky sauce that he called barbeque sauce. She wasn't sure why, as the sauce wasn't cooked on a grill, but it was tasty!

"Yeah kid's a wiz at this stuff." Professor Qrow took a bite out of a fluffy meat manjuu. He was… gruffer than she'd expected from an educator. "Gods, it's awful not being able to eat his grub back when I'm at Beacon."

"Mweh he he he." Pyrrha giggled as she saw her friend laugh at his uncle as if his sentence was just what he wanted to hear. "Shows you right he he he."

Something about the way Jaune performed an 'evil laugh' was… kind of adorable. W-was that alright to think about a friend? It wasn't overreaching was it? Were boys ok with being called adorable? Pyrrha liked being told she was adorable by her mom.

"It is very good, Jaune." Her uncle Tullius sounding emotionless (he was a big softy though) complimented as the large construction worker worked through a bowl of savory smelling noodles. They were covered in a strange black sauce that Jaune told them was made from beans, but they were good.

Funnily enough he called it Jjiajangmyun, reminding her of the Sniper-ZhanMadao wielder and making her lose a bit of appetite for them, regardless of how tasty it was. Pyrrha happily let her uncle and her two younger cousins (aged four and five) messily mess around with the sauced noodles.

The sauce splattered against their little faces as they ate and as she saw her uncle reach with a napkin to wipe one of his children's faces with a napkin, Pyrrha saw Jaune lean over with a slightly damp napkin as well for her other cousin.

"The food goes in your mouth, little guy, not on it." She felt warm as she saw her friend wipe her little cousin Jason's mouth, his rabbit ears flicking from side to side, drawing her eyes. Luckily her Uncle Tullius worked alongside plenty of Faunus and had no issues with her friend. "Should I just give you a fork? It'll be less messy."

"He'll never learn how to use chopsticks properly if you let him be coddled, Jaune." Her uncle spoke, his voice a deep monotone rumble. "Thank you for your assistance, though. Jason's the messier one."

"Ah, no biggie. I have a couple of younger siblings myself and they've been worse."

That sparked a glimmer of interest. Jaune had siblings? Pyrrha was an only child, so she was curious.

"How many siblings do you have, Jaune?" She asked curiously, "I'm a single child so I'm curious."

"Seven sisters, four older, three younger, all human. I'm the only one that turned up Faunus in my family. And there's Nora and Ren who are adopted and are both my age."

"What?" Her spoon stopped moving. "S-seven sisters?"

That was a lot.

"Eight with Nora." Her friend laughed as if that wasn't just so many siblings, finishing wiping Jason's cheek. "We're a big crazy family."

That sounded nice. Her parents had struggled to just have her, according to them. She was their little miracle, so she'd grudgingly accepted that she'd never have any siblings, which was sad. Pyrrha would have loved a little brother or sister to spoil.

But the fact that Jaune had THAT many siblings instead of inciting the normal jealousy, rather just made her feel… not pity but… concern? Worry? Ok it was probably closer to pity. That just sounded really busy.

"It's not too bad." Jaune shrugged as if to reassure her, "Just kind of hard to make time for everyone fairly, but we all find ways to make due."

"Kid runs himself ragged to make time for everyone, he means." She heard Professor Qrow snicker, "He just drops everything he's working on if one of his sisters asks for his time. He's absolutely whipped."

"Hey!"

Pyrrha giggled again, watching as Jaune flicked a fried potsticker at his uncle from across the table, only for the older Huntsman to just grin and skillfully snatch the treat out of the air with his mouth.

Her Uncle Tullius gave a slightly disapproving look and both boys (Professor Qrow included) gave a short apology as now they'd set some bad precedent for her little cousins who were now flicking little bits of sauce coated chicken at each other.

That was quickly put to an end by her own uncle as well. Uncle Tullius was kind and fair, but stern, which meant his sons quickly went back to eating messily like the little devils they were.

It was a liveliness that reminded her of the little affectionate ribbing and banter between her own parents, even if it definitely was much more energetic than what she'd been used to. It definitely made Pyrrha feel a little homesick.

"Oh, Pyrrha, you should try these!" Jaune leaned over to her side, his shoulder brushing against her own, filling her senses with the scent of spiced pine and fruit, the taste of juniper berries clashing oddly against the lingering taste of sweet and spicy pork and fried rice in her mouth. "This one, this one, this is good too."

His hands quickly piled a small platter of various little dim sum of all kinds from a bamboo box to her plate.

"Made 'em myself so they're all tasty!" He grinned.

"When did you even find the time for it all?" Pyrrha asked curiously, "This is a lot."

"Oh, well, time doesn't pass when I put items in my Semblance. So I just make super big batches whenever I'm in the mood to make something, and try to keep things organized. That last bit is harder than doing the actual cooking for me, ha ha." She could feel his right foot tap at the ground, his leg bouncing a little, "So technically this is more like the fruit of months of effort."

Pyrrha felt her face flush faintly.

She knew that it wasn't like Jaune had been preparing months ahead of time for her specifically, but somehow right now, it sort of felt exactly like that. It made her feel sort of… floaty. Special.

"It's amazing. You have a really good Semblance." She complimented, "It's so useful."

"I get to carry a full buffet and wardrobe with me wherever I go, yeah, ha ha." Jaune smiled, "It's handy. I can even use it in a fight if I'm willing to be tricky. Nobody expects the surprise boulder."

Pyrrha laughed.

"Surprise boulder?"

"I mean, it's an instant portable cover from attacks or even a giant hammer to drop if I'm feeling really vindictive. Never underestimate the power of a good ol' rock!"

"That does sound really handy." Pyrrha reached out with her chopsticks, taking a steamed bit of diced, seasoned shrimp wrapped in some glistening white wrapping. It was chewy and added a pleasant texture without interfering with the taste of seasoned shrimp. Maybe rice based? She wasn't sure, but it was good. "I've never had the opportunity to fight someone that can change the environment like that before."

"Neither have I. It's pretty uncommon and my style isn't very much suited for it, even if I can do it. Still it's pretty handy either way. Oh, I'm also a spearman, by the way. No fancy mecha-shift though, just a traditional first-gen type of fighter."

"W-would you like to spar sometime then, Jaune? I-I'd love to see how you fight as well. You've gotten to see my fighting style all week, after all."

"Sure! Anytime!"

"Ah." Pyrrha blushed, suddenly remembering a bit of an excitement-dampening fact. "It'll have to be once I get to start Sanctum in the fall, though. I'm currently… very grounded once I get back home tomorrow."

"Oof." Jaune grinned and gave her a pat on her shoulder. "We'll figure it out, miss champion. Besides, you'll get to meet my sisters Clarent, Robin, Nora, and my brother Ren then! Oh and there's also Em! Err, Emerald, that is. She's practically family too, but officially I'm her Sponsor. She can be a little odd, but she's a good girl. If she says anything weird, just, uh. Let it be. She doesn't mean any harm, really."

"I would love to meet your siblings." Pyrrha smiled, what was the issue with Emerald though?

Hmm? Now that she thought of it, hadn't she seen Jaune in the stands on the first day of the Circuit? There was a green haired girl next to him then, right? The butler suit girl? Oh. Oh. She must have had a particular sort of hobby. Her mother once talked about her dark history and it seemed, perhaps, Emerald was in the middle of her own.

"I hope I can be friends with them too." Pyrrha wanted to make more friends regardless.

Still, Jaune was Sponsoring someone? She'd heard of the Huntsman Sponsor System, but wasn't sure of what the details were. When she'd asked if she could get into Sanctum that way they'd just told her that she shouldn't get herself involved in such things.

She supposed it must have been different than a company sponsorship in the Circuit, though, as that was more just monetary support from what she understood.

"Ah they'll love ya." Her friend assured, his chopsticks pulling a bit of tender flesh (it just fell off the bone) from the ribs on his plate and popping it into his mouth. He chewed quickly and swallowed. "Nora will probably want a spar first though, she's kind of a battle junkie at times. Uh, pro tip: watch out for your legs."

Pyrrha laughed.

"Isn't that giving me a bit of an unfair advantage?" She found herself giving a bit of a confident smirk. "I am the new Regional Circuit Champion in our age bracket, you know."

"Pshh, naw. Well. Ok it is, but Nora's got a bad habit of it and it's better to break her out of it anyways. One of those things where she listens but not really because I'm her brother. In one ear and out the other."

"Ah… my mom says the same about me sometimes when it comes to Huntress training." Pyrrha admitted, "So I guess we have that in common?"

She liked making her friend laugh.

"It used to feel like a fairy tale, now it seems we were just pre~tending~ We'd fix our world, then on our way to a ha~ppy ending~"

Jaune enjoyed music. They came to him in dreams, that quiet forest by the campfire, by the girl in the red hood, their shoulders leaning together under the swirling night sky.

He hoped one day he would meet her and thank her, but for some reason he couldn't ever remember her face. Just the sound of her sad, quiet voice, lonely and wanting, and her red, red cloak.

But she was a fragment of his imagination. Maybe even some sort of amalgam of various people he knew and felt safe with smashed together. Dreams of Purpose stated that the things he dreamed of could only be from himself after all.

"Then it turned out life was far less like a bedtime story~ Than a tragedy with no big reveal of the he~ro's glory~"

Pyrrha clapped along to the beat as she sat next to him on the couch, enjoying the music.

She'd asked how he'd managed to sing in harmony by himself, as if he was two voices in one, and his answer had been half a truth. A breathing technique he'd said.

Nothing could explain how ridiculous the Gacha was, but according to the thing it was an ability that technically could be taught and learned, as insane as it was. But honestly there was no point in learning this ability as a normal person.

SSR Rarity Ability: Furinji Style Secret Art - Bi-Vocal

Origin: Martial Type Earth Realm #ANM012

Description: This technique is one of the secret arts of the Furinji Style of Martial Arts, most famous for the Grandmaster Martial Artist Hayato Furinji, the Invincible Superman. This technique allows the practitioner to divide their trachea, lungs, and vocals into their right and left sides, producing a special sound and even allowing one to speak two sentences at once. It can also be manipulated to reduce one's voice so that only one person could hear it regardless of how many others are between them.

With the addition of some weird diaphragm manipulation he could even get the lungs to alternate breaths so that he was always physically intaking oxygen.

"And it seems we weren't pre~pared~ For a game that wasn't fair~"

Using it that way wasn't very practical, though.

Frankly it was a borderline useless technique for combat that had originally felt like a SCAM of an SSR Rarity. At best it could be used to send a whisper in class to Ren, Nora, and Emerald when he didn't feel like passing notes. But that was useless when they couldn't pass it back.

But it was actually Nora who had pointed out with this technique that 'he had accidentally developed' he could harmonize with himself so it wasn't as pointless as he'd complained about.

That made him feel silly. And Nora got triple pancakes for a week. That sort of became Ren's problem, but Jaune found himself not feeling guilty about that for once.

It had shot from an ability he had but didn't bother doing anything with to his favorite non-combat one instantly.

Sure SR Rarity Ability: Two-Star Michellin Chef was pretty darn awesome, but that also required a lot more food prep than one would expect.

And honestly he was more passionate about music than cooking, as much as he'd come to love both.

"Do we just go home?~ Can we follow through?~ When all hope is gone, there is one thing we can do~"

And while it was a little embarrassing how his new friend Pyrrha seemed to be a big fan of his songs after discovering them very recently, it was also a point of pride for him, so that was ok. She didn't gush or do anything weird, just genuinely enjoyed him singing. That was nice.

She didn't really ask him any questions about his status as the Little Professor as that didn't seem to interest her much, which was exciting too.

And he felt his brother float down to pat his head as he and Pyrrha enjoyed his song together.

"I'm glad you're getting along well with Pyrrha. Treat her well, kay?"

His tail wagged.

Of course he would. They were going to become the best of friends!

"Let's just live~"
