In Sunset Palace, much of the events that Winter had surmised were indeed coming to pass. Still clad in courtly attire, one of the most powerful men in the empire paced back and forth in the sitting room of the empress, nearly wearing a hole in the plush, imported carpets.

His daughter the empress lounged elegantly in her chair, vaguely resembling a tiger that was well satiated from its meal. Splatters of blood decorated one corner of the sitting room where Empress Katya frequently received important guests. Gold chains that matched the understated luxury of the queen's tastes strung up a limp man. Earlier, the chains had been made a racket on the hardwood floor, but now they were as still as statues.
