บท 21: Message: XX

"Callaghan? Callaghan!" she hollered, seeing her partner at the very end of the corridor, opening the very last door there. She looked at her, but in the moment she saw Toussaint, she just went inside the room and slammed the door behind her.

Her partner frowned, but she knew there was no way for Aria to know she was there when she was talking with her wife. Or, more likely, she was interrogating her.

She knocked to the door, but there was no response. She knocked once more. Nothing.

Without further ado she exhaled, and then opened the door.

"In what moment a person who is so fucked up in terms of knocking, and tries to force others to do it, decides that lack of 'come in' is an actual invitation to do so?" Callaghan greeted her with the snark Chyler was expecting.

"In a moment the one that is not replying is needed for the hecking job." She rolled her eyes. "I got the report from the autopsy, and since you're my partner, well. I kind of need you to..."

"Let's set something straight, Fromage, you don't need me, and we both know that better than well." She scoffed, sitting behind the desk that was, apparently, hers. "But I get it, you need me to work, so I can't fuck around. What do you have?"

Chyler choked at first, seeing how fast Callaghan had changed the topic. The detective cleared her throat and put the folder with reports on the desk that she saw was deprived from anything personal. Maybe because her partner just got it, or maybe because she wasn't particularly a sentimental person.

"Well, as you said yourself, he had been stabbed."

"Shocker." Aria snorted, flipping through the report. "Several traumas of the chest and abdomen, knife with wide blade, yeah, as if I didn't say it right away, whatever." She chanted, looking over the text. "Stabbed from up, straight, so probably someone was sitting on him, toxicology revealing the traces of methamphetamine. Yeah, seriously, I'm shocked I wasn't wrong." She gave Toussaint a side glance. "How do you feel with that, though? You were pretty skeptical when you heard me speaking the words of wisdom."

"Read further." Chyler nodded almost encouragingly, choosing to just dismiss the mockery. At least for the time being.

So Aria did.

"Yeah, the paper in the throat, crumpled but definitely pushed there forcefully." She nodded, since it was nothing new for her. "The mark of Hellblades. SURPRISING."

"You don't need to rub it to my face, Callaghan."

"I'd rather not rub anything into your face, like, at all."

"Unless it's a volcanic stone?" Chyler raised her eyebrow, but then she saw just a tired look from Aria's side. Her partner sighed.

"No, Sauvignon, it would be a shame to destroy that pretty face of yours, since I do not present neither the beauty, nor the propriety." She shrugged, leaning back on the chair and drilling Toussaint with her gaze. "So at least one of us has to be the people's person, and it sure as hell ain't me."

"I never thought I'd say that, but it seems there's actually something we actually agree on." Chyler sighed. "What of Hellblades, though?"

"I'm on it right now. Kinda had other things to take care of on the go." She stated, powering on her computer, but seeing that her partner didn't intend to move, she leaned on her forearms rested on the desktop, and she asked: "Is there anything I can help you with? And there better wouldn't."

"I saw those 'things' you had to take care of." She admitted, looking at her partner, trying to conceal the concern. "You okay? I mean... that was your wife, wasn't it?"

"Yeah, what of it? You don't condone being gay?" Aria raised her eyebrow, not moving her sight from Toussaint's face. "Tell me you are, and bring this misery to an end so I can have an actual valid reason to terminate my contract."

"Well, I'm tremendously sorry to say that, but no, I do not have problem with that." Chyler shrugged dismissingly, making Aria groan internally. "Also, Rogers promised you'd be an asset. I just want to see how that goes."

"Probably as sideways as it could." Aria scoffed. "You know, from your great plan to mold me into a perfect cop."

"You can't make perfect something that is broken." Toussaint squinted her eyes, but Aria just burst into laughter.

"That's something you tell yourself every day when you look into the mirror first thing in the morning, eh?" she chuckled coldly. "Yeah, I can tell. And now shoo, I need to work. And I guess so do you."

And she opened the browser, giving Toussaint a clear hint to leave, since she would not get reply to any question she might have had.
