บท 10: The Grotto's Keeper

The water ahead shimmered with an otherworldly light, casting streaks of blue and silver across the rocky walls. Mira swam with purpose, her movements precise, as if she knew every crevice of this hidden domain.

Daniel followed closely, his body still aching from the ordeal in the Abyssal Pass. His mind raced with thoughts of the strange whispers and the menacing Phantoms. Yet, he couldn't help but feel a twinge of curiosity about the grotto Mira spoke so highly of.

"Is this it?" Daniel asked as they approached an ornate archway of coral, glowing faintly. Strange runes etched into the stone pulsated softly, like a heartbeat.

"Yes," Mira replied. Her tone was reverent, her usual sharp demeanor softened. "The Grotto of Echoes."

As they passed through the archway, Daniel was struck by the sheer beauty of the place. The grotto was a vast, open cavern, its ceiling adorned with shimmering stalactites that reflected light from bioluminescent plants scattered across the floor. Pools of crystal-clear water dotted the area, each glowing with a faint hue of green or blue.

"What is this place?" Daniel asked, his voice filled with awe.

"It's sacred ground," Mira explained. "A sanctuary for those seeking strength, wisdom, or refuge."

"And what are we seeking?"

Mira's expression darkened. "Answers."

As they ventured deeper into the grotto, a low rumble echoed through the chamber. Daniel's fins tensed, and his eyes darted around for the source of the noise.

"Stay calm," Mira said, though even she seemed on edge. "The keeper doesn't take kindly to intruders."

"The keeper?" Daniel repeated, his voice rising an octave. "You didn't mention a keeper!"

Before Mira could respond, the ground beneath them trembled. From the largest pool at the center of the grotto, a massive figure began to rise.

It was a serpent, its scales glimmering like polished obsidian. Its eyes were a piercing gold, and its body coiled endlessly, disappearing into the depths of the pool. The creature's presence was overwhelming, its gaze alone enough to make Daniel feel like a minnow in the face of a leviathan.

[New Entity Detected: Orivath, Keeper of the Grotto.]

[Threat Level: Extreme.]

The serpent's voice resonated through the cavern, deep and commanding. "Who dares disturb the sanctity of my domain?"

Mira stepped forward, her head held high despite the immense pressure of Orivath's gaze. "We come seeking guidance, Keeper. This one," she gestured to Daniel, "is marked by a system not of this world. He needs answers."

Orivath's golden eyes fixed on Daniel, and he felt an unbearable weight press down on him. "A system-bearer," the serpent hissed. "Rare, and often troublesome. What makes you worthy of my aid?"

Daniel struggled to speak, his voice faltering. "I—I didn't choose this. I just… woke up like this. I'm trying to survive, to understand what's happening to me."

The serpent let out a low, rumbling laugh. "Survival is not a reason. It is instinct. If you wish to earn my guidance, you must prove your strength."

[Challenge Issued: Survive Orivath's Trial.]

The serpent's body uncoiled, and the water around them surged violently. Mira shouted something, but Daniel couldn't hear her over the roar of the waves. Before he could react, Orivath's massive tail lashed out, creating a powerful current that threw him backward.

Daniel's system chimed in, cold and clinical:

[Warning: Combat Trial Initiated. Escape is not an option.]

"Great," Daniel muttered, righting himself just in time to see Orivath lunging toward him.

[Combat Engaged: Orivath, Keeper of the Grotto.]

The serpent's fangs gleamed as it struck, and Daniel barely managed to dodge, his body moving on instinct. His system activated Surge Strike, propelling him forward in a burst of speed. He aimed for Orivath's exposed side, but his attack barely scratched the creature's obsidian scales.

"Is that all?" Orivath taunted, its voice like thunder. "You'll need more than that to impress me."

Daniel's mind raced. He activated Shadow Veil, hoping to disappear from the serpent's sight. But Orivath seemed unfazed, its golden eyes cutting through the veil like sunlight through mist.

"You cannot hide from me, little fish," the serpent said, swiping at Daniel with its tail.

The impact sent Daniel crashing into a rocky outcropping. Pain shot through his body, and his system flashed red warnings in his vision:

[Critical Damage Sustained. Vitality at 45%.]

"Daniel!" Mira's voice cut through the chaos. She darted around Orivath, drawing its attention. "You need to think, not just react! Use your surroundings!"

Use my surroundings? Daniel thought, glancing around the cavern. The glowing pools, the jagged stalactites… an idea sparked in his mind.

As Orivath lunged again, Daniel propelled himself upward, toward the ceiling. The serpent followed, its massive body creating waves that rocked the cavern. Daniel positioned himself near a particularly large stalactite and baited Orivath into striking.

At the last moment, he dodged, and the serpent's momentum carried it forward. Orivath's head collided with the stalactite, sending shards of rock cascading into the water.

The serpent roared in anger, its movements growing more erratic.

[Critical Hit Delivered. Orivath's Vitality Reduced by 15%.]

It wasn't much, but it was something. Daniel's confidence grew as he realized that Orivath, for all its power, wasn't invincible.

"Keep going!" Mira shouted.

But before Daniel could plan his next move, Orivath let out a deafening roar. The water around them surged with energy, and the glowing pools began to pulse erratically.

"You've earned my attention, system-bearer," the serpent growled. "Now, let us see if you can withstand the Abyssal Wrath."
