บท 65: Zombie Scout

The subsequent day unfolded in the familiar pattern of Xavier's routine within the secret facility. He commenced the day with the customary morning physical training session, followed by attending theory classes to expand his knowledge. As the evening descended, he dedicated himself to investigation tasks, utilizing his Inspect ability to gather information on fellow military personnel.

With his strength and constitution meeting the prerequisites for learning weapons, Xavier made a conscious decision not to disclose this information to Captain Martin. His choice was driven by a desire to evade suspicion and maintain a low profile within the facility.

As time passed, the days melded into a monotonous stream, with Xavier's existence revolving around his uneventful routine. During this period, he had already employed his Inspect ability on every military individual within the training grounds, revealing that they were all zombies.

One day,

During a leisurely stroll back to his hostel after a theory class, Xavier stumbled upon an intriguing scene. Engrossed in conversation, a guard was accompanying the secretary, Bella. Xavier, being Xavier, decided to employ his unique ability, "Inspect," on this guard . What he found was a revelation that added a new dimension to his understanding of the world he was gradually becoming part of.

Upon inspecting, Xavier learned about a creature he hadn't seen before amidst the usual half devils and zombies—a Zombie Scout.

Swiftly, Xavier discerned a distinction between the regular zombies and the Zombie Scout. The Scout displayed signs of possessing a mind of its own, engaging in conversation with Bella.

In contrast, the zombies functioned like automated machines, mechanically performing their routines.

He didn't came into this conclusion in the current moment. Instead, a memory resurfaced—of a time from many days ago when he had chosen to employ Trajectory Warp trait of the gravity skill on a zombie soldier.

He hurled a small rock toward the zombie soldier from a distance and employed his skill to alter the rock's trajectory

in order to hit the zombie soldier.

The result was illuminating: upon impact with the zombie's head, there was no response. The zombie soldier continued its motion, unaffected and undisturbed. Xavier's observation extended beyond this single incident. He noticed the zombies on the training ground never engaged with one another or exchanged communication. They seemed to adhere to a predefined script.

This series of events led Xavier to a firm conclusion: the zombies lacked personal agency. Instead, they appeared to operate under predetermined programming, void of independent decision-making. This realization, shaped by his experiment and subsequent observations, further emphasized the intrinsic contrast between the mindless behavior of regular zombies and the distinct sentience displayed by the Zombie Scout.
