บท 2: Chapter 2 “Field of Runes”
The field of runes was not an actual field with ancient runes but it was just an area that's filled with magic, It's an area where the magic energy is thick. It's a training ground that was made by the teachers to help their students become stronger.
The main special property of the 'Field of Runes' is that all spells in the field of Runes get reduced making it harder to cast and easier to dodge.
The other properties are that it's a neutral ground where no matter who enters it the user is not affected by the effects of the field.
For example: If a person has a curse cast on him or her and enters the field, the curse will disappear because the magic is cancelled out.
Also, the field is an area where a user's mana is increased making it easier to cast spells and easier to heal.
In addition, the field is also an area where the user can train his or her body by training in the field of runes.
This means that the user will be able to grow stronger physically and mentally while training in the field of runes.
There is one major drawback to the "field of Runes" it drains mana out of the body and extends it to the field itself, the longer you stay in the field the weaker you will become and the faster the field will drain you.
The reason is simple the field is constantly absorbing mana from the user, and if the user doesn't have enough mana left, then the user will die.
This is why the user has to train his or her body while training in the field of runes.
It also doesn't help that the field isn't a field it's a forest with a set area that is surrounded by magical properties which monsters are attracted to.
I entered the gym and headed towards the changing room. As I walked in I saw a bunch of kids standing around talking.
One kid noticed me and started laughing.
"Look at this loser, he thinks he's tough huh? Well, he's gonna find out soon enough."
He continued to laugh until he realized that I didn't join in on the conversation. Then he stopped abruptly and turned away.
That was weird…why did he suddenly stop? And what does he mean by 'he'll find out'? Is there something else I should know about the field of runes? Maybe I shouldn't go into the field alone.
Well, whatever it is I need to talk to someone about it later.
Right now, I have work to do.
I took off my shirt and pants and threw them into the corner. After putting on my uniform and boots I exited the changing room.
It was now time to enter the Field of Runes.
The first step, find the entrance.
Looking around, I couldn't find a sign anywhere.
Maybe the teachers forgot to post one.
I decided to ask a teacher.
"Excuse me, sir," I said as I approached a tall muscular man with short brown hair.
"Hey there, what's up?"
"Umm..isn't there supposed to be a sign somewhere?"
"Oh yeah, we haven't posted one yet. But don't worry, you won't miss it."
With that, he turned away and left me behind.
Okay well, I guess that answers my question.
A moment passed by as I stood still waiting for more information.
"Ah! Here it is."
I looked around and finally spotted a small wooden door.
Why the hell did they hide it?
Taking a deep breath I opened the door.
Once I stepped through the portal I found myself in a dark cave. There were torches placed every few feet along the walls. They burned bright orange giving the whole area a warm glow.
The ground was covered with gravel and dirt. In the middle of the room was a large circle made from stones. It seemed like there used to be a fire burning within the center of the stone ring. Now it lay cold and dead.
To the side of the circular formation was a giant tree stump. On top of the stump was a massive sword with blood dripping from its tip. The blade was glowing blue with veins of red running throughout it.
At the end of the stump was a pile of bones.
All around the clearing were corpses. Most of them appeared to be children. All except for two.
One child wore a white robe that glowed faintly under the torchlight. His skin was pale and his eyes were closed tight. Next to him lay a girl with long golden hair tied together with ribbons. She had a peaceful look on her face. Her lips moved slightly as she breathed softly.
Um, where did I end up? I don't think this is the field of runes it's supposed to be a forest, not a cave surrounded by dead people Lucian thought confused.
Suddenly, he felt a sharp pain in his head followed by a wave of dizziness.
Lucian collapsed onto the ground as everything went black.

["Welcome to the Fields of Runes."]
I awoke to a loud banging noise.
I groaned and tried to open my eyes but they wouldn't move. My body felt heavy and sore.
"Wakey wakey."
The words echoed in my ears as I forced my eyelids to crack open. When they finally did I saw a woman standing above me.
She had light blond hair and green eyes. A pair of glasses rested on her nose and her outfit consisted of a white lab coat with a pink bow tie.
Her arms were crossed over her chest as she glared down at me with a frown.
"Don't you dare fall asleep during your lessons?"
"Wha-"
"Never mind."
With that, the teacher walked away leaving me alone with my thoughts.
Wait...what happened? Where am I? What time is it? Why does my head hurt?
Questions raced through my mind as I struggled to remember where I was and why I couldn't seem to move properly.
Finally, after a few moments of struggling to make sense of the situation, I managed to sit upright.
I looked around and noticed several other bodies lying next to me.
They all appeared to be unconscious and unmoving.
I started to panic. Who are these people? Did they try to kill me too?!
I quickly scanned their faces looking for anyone familiar.
One of them was a little girl with long blonde hair tied in pigtails.
Next to her was a young boy whose face was hidden behind his bangs.
Another boy was sitting up staring straight ahead with a blank expression.
He didn't appear to have any injuries but his clothes were torn and tattered.
A girl with dark brown hair was curled up tightly hugging herself trying desperately to remain warm.
There was also a tall muscular guy dressed in leather armour with a scar across his cheek.
Lastly, there was a short kid with a bald head and a scruffy beard.
Each of them was breathing steadily and had no visible wounds.
So I guess I've appeared with other people? Lucian thought
Anyway, this is the field of runes feel free to do whatever you want, whenever you want to leave the field of rune, you have to will to leave the field of runes and a translucent screen will pop up and you can exit. But if you die or get captured then you're stuck until someone finds you.
But if you are in a fight or you take any type of damage or you are near a magical beast you will not be able to leave the field of runes
Until you have to kill it.
Thats its feel free to leave now
A young woman who looked to be in her late 20s stood above him. She had dark brown hair pulled back into a ponytail. Her face was smooth and beautiful. Her body was slim and athletic.
I honestly don't care I'll just leave this group and go on my own the more the merrier only applies when you don't have to worry about getting stabbed in the back Lucian thought as the people he just saw started to bicker amongst themselves. As one of them shouted
"Hey I'll be the leader of this group, you all better listen to what I say otherwise I'll cut off your heads and feed them to the dogs!"
He had a muscular build with dirty blonde hair and a bushy mustache. His muscles were covered in scars and tattoos.
Yeah this is exactly why I like to be alone instead of being around idiots like this Lucian thought as he watched the group argue amongst themselves as he began walking away from the group
He didn't bother looking back at the others. He had no interest in making friends or teaming up with anyone. He was a lone wolf, and that's how he intended to remain.
As he walked, the scenery changed drastically. The once peaceful-looking field was replaced by a barren landscape littered with debris. The sky was pitch black and the air was freezing.
The only sound was his footsteps as he trudged forward.
A sudden chill ran through his body causing him to shiver uncontrollably.
It was then that he remembered he didn't bring any food or water.
His stomach rumbled loudly.
"Great, now I'm hungry."
He sighed heavily and continued walking.
The wind picked up blowing fiercely against him. His clothes flapped wildly in the gale.
Snow fell lightly covering his entire body.
It was becoming increasingly difficult to see. The only thing visible was his hands as they clutched tightly to his coat.
Eventually, the snowstorm calmed down and the temperature returned to normal.
He continued onward until he came upon a clearing. In the distance was a large mountain. A single tree grew on top of the peak.
Lucian made his way toward the summit stopping occasionally to rest. As he approached the base of the tree, the ground shook violently knocking him off balance.
Suddenly, the trees around him began to shake as well. They swayed in unison creating a loud roar. Then the shaking stopped abruptly.
All that remained were the remnants of what used to be a forest. Only a small patch of grass and dirt surrounded by dead vegetation.
A flash of light blinded Lucian temporarily. When the vision cleared, he saw a giant figure standing before him. Its arms reached upward towards the heavens. It seemed to glow faintly with a blue hue.
The creature opened its mouth and roared.

"What the hell?!" Lucian exclaimed as the ground below him split open.
An enormous worm slithered out of the crevasse.
It was massive with a head twice the size of Lucian's torso. It had sharp teeth protruding from its jaws.
Its eyes glowed bright yellow emitting an eerie greenish aura.
"Oh shit!"
He jumped backwards barely avoiding being crushed under the monster's weight.
"H-Hey!"
Another worm slithered out of the hole. It was much smaller than the first but still menacing nonetheless.
Both worms charged at Lucian at lightning speed.
He quickly drew his Katana and held it defensively.
One of them lunged at him.
He slashed at the worm with his blade cutting deep into its flesh. The wound bled profusely but did little harm. The creature merely brushed aside the cut leaving behind a thin trail of blood.
The other worm came at him with its claws raised high ready to strike.
Lucian ducked low dodging the attack.
Before he could stand up, both creatures tackled him simultaneously. He struggled to break free but couldn't find any purchase on their slippery skin.
They rolled across the floor until they finally came to a stop.
Their tails wrapped around his legs pinning him down.
Lucian tried desperately to free himself but the two worms were too powerful. Their bodies pressed against him forcing him to breathe shallowly.
Finally, after struggling for several minutes, he managed to slip away from their grasp.
"That hurt..." he muttered.
He took a moment to catch his breath before turning around.
What were those things? What was that sound earlier? Did I hear someone call my name?!
"Wahh!"
Something hit him hard from above causing him to lose consciousness.
