บท 29: Helping

"Then shouldn't we call the X-Men? They are more suited for that. Why us?"

"Between the two of us, if there is any situation we cannot handle, I don't think any of them would be able to," David replied as he walked forward.

He didn't know if it was due to his overwhelming power or if he was just naturally meant to, but he towered over Jean as they stood close to each other.

"I guess that makes sense. But what if the others ask about us?"

"There's no need to be nervous. You will do well," David said as he held her hand.

He could tell what worried her. She had never joined any of the X-Men missions, even though she would have liked to.

But unlike the original X-Men, David had made a simple rule: if you weren't eighteen, then don't dream of joining the team.

Neither he nor Jean was of that age; they were barely seventeen, and even that wouldn't happen until the end of the year—this was July.

The original X-Men had underage members entering the team to go on missions, some of which led to their deaths.

Even though David had eyes that had seen all and ears that had heard all, he didn't plan to be part of a place where underage children died because of some stupid mission that would never help them achieve their goals.

"Now, how good is your flying? I can't teleport us there," David said.

"Working on it. But can't you just teleport us somewhere close, then we fly the rest of the way?"

"That makes more sense," David replied before grabbing hold of her hand, and immediately they warped out of the area.

Far behind where they had been, a young man could be seen standing and watching with gritted teeth. He looked to be around seventeen or eighteen years of age.

Unlike many, or even the lucky few, there was nothing of note that made him stand out, except for his strange choice of accessory. His goggles glowed as though burning with intense heat beneath them.

Meanwhile, halfway across the world, within a large forest, two people appeared seemingly out of nowhere. They were dressed in simple clothing.

"So, what are we doing here?" Jean asked almost as soon as she appeared.

"Making a small detour. The curse of my power doesn't just end with non-interference, you know," David replied as he gently hovered into the air.

Following him, Jean did the same, but he could clearly see that she wasn't as good at it as he had expected. She still lacked a lot of control.

Looking at her headband, a new number appeared: 30. This meant that the total amount of power she had access to had increased.

This would mess with her control for a while, but it was for the better. It would force her to relearn the basics, and constant practice of the basics would make her an expert.

That way, no matter how much power she gained, she would always be able to master it quickly.

Now in the air, David held her hand to stabilize her before they both suddenly went invisible.

"What if the professor finds out?"

"That wouldn't matter much," David replied with a smile.

They didn't fly high, but they were far enough off the ground. David turned both of them invisible with nothing but a thought as he continued to fly forward.

Soon, they came upon a small house sitting in the middle of nowhere. The house seemed abandoned and dilapidated, but David hovered before it and waited.

"Is this the place?" Jean asked.

"Yes."

"So, what are we doing here?"

"Helping…" David replied before suddenly flying closer.

As soon as he did, they both saw a mirror-like surface. It looked fractured but somehow intact enough to form what looked like a dome around the house.

"What is that?"

"...Not all mutants are blessed with complete control over their abilities. Some are given powers far beyond anything imaginable, but with no way to control them. He is one such person," David said as he waved his hand and a small screen appeared.
