Penny had taken Takoda, Wiyot, Calian, and Arnold out to a bar that was nearby called The Inlaws. Takoda surveyed the bar as he tried to take it all in. While it was no high-class venue, it was a great deal better a dive bar with a certain sort of charm to it. There was a moose head that was hung up above the entrance. There was a painting of the cocaine bear with cocaine smudged on his face at the back to the right. The bar itself was built out of oak and embodied an undeniable feeling.
“Not what I was expecting”. Calian said as he took a glance around the bar. He looked at the other patrons who were sitting atop these double high tops that were also made of oak. There was a middle age couple to the right in the middle of the bar and right behind them was a psychedelic sort of painting of the former queen of England with a busted lip.
“It’s the closet bar near the office”. Penny said. “I mean, if you want to call it an office”.
“It’s good enough to heal up Halian”. Takoda said. “So, this should work out too”.
Takoda shot a smile at Penny as Penny returned the affection. Penny took a sip of her drink. It was a glass bottle of Miller lite. Takoda was drinking a glass bottle of Coors lite. Calian had some makers mark on the rocks. Arnold had a gin and tonic. Wiyot drank nothing. Takoda leaned back a bit and cocked a smirk on his face and shot another look to Penny.
“You don’t drink Wiyot?” Penny asked.
“Right now I am looking to find my heart”. Wiyot said. “And it is not in there”.
“…Oh, okay”. Penny said, her eyes a bit wide after that. “So anyway, what brought you all out this way?. Or is that too confidential?”
“What do you think Wiyot?” Takoda asked.
“We have to go to Vancouver”. Wiyot said, which caught Takoda and Calian off guard.
“Vacation time?”
“That would be nice”. Calian said.
“It’s a little more complicated than that”. Takoda said.
“I have time for you to uncomplicate for me”.
“We have to take a trip”. Wiyot said.
“Well, what kind of trip?” Penny asked. “Why are you guys being so mysterious?”
“It’s just kind of a personal journey”. Takoda told Penny. “You know what a mean?”
“I think so. This is some sort of spiritual journey, right?”
“I mean…” Calian began.
“Yeah”. Takoda interjected. “Sure”.
“That’s pretty cool”. Penny said. “I’ve always wanted to do something like that”.
“Why don’t you?” Takoda asked.
“I don’t know. Money, I guess”.
“That’ll do it”. Arnold said.
“Oh c’om, there’s got to be one place you want to go. Pick one!”
“Alright. Probably India. Seems like a place that’s primed for some self-discovery”.
“I’ve been to India before”. Arnold said.
“Really?” Penny asked. “How was it?”
“It was beautiful. The water is a no go. But outside of that, it was great. Why do you want to go?”
“It just looks like I could get into myself there”. Penny said. “You know what I mean? They have over a billion people there, a good number of them are spiritual anyway. Just seems like it would be the right place “.
“I don’t see why not?” Arnold said.
“So, why did you go there Arnold?”
Arnold’s head lowered as she stared into his drink. Takoda looked at Arnold as he stared at his drink before he picked it up his drink and sipped on it. Arnold then put it back down before a sigh left his mouth.
“…I went there after my daughter died”.
Takoda’s mouth dropped as a deft silence fell. Penny held space for Arnold, Wiyot stared at hi, and Calian had to look away. Arnold picked up his drink and began to sip on it. Once he sat it down he looked past the bar top.
“…Halian should be almost done”. Wiyot said.
“Yes!” Penny let out. “So sorry! Didn’t mean to hold you guys up”.
“Don’t worry about it”. Takoda said, putting his right hand on Penny’s left arm. “He’s a big boy, he’ll live”.
“Let’s head back”. Arnold said. “I’ll take care of the bill”.
“Are you sure?” Penny asked.
“Don’t worry about it”. Arnold said. “I don’t mind paying for a good time”.
After Arnold dropped the cash for the drinks Takoda, Penny, Wiyot, Calian, and Arnold all made their way back to the “doctor’s office”. Back inside the examination room Halian sat on the examination table now with a white cloth bandage wrapped around his right arm. Doctor Mitsubishi stood to his left with a clipboard and pen in his hands. His eyes, steered right towards the incoming group.
“Welcome back”. Doctor Mitsubishi said with a sly grin on his face. “So nice of you to join us”.
“Where did you guys go?” Hailan asked.
“Don’t worry about it”. Calian said.
“It’s no big deal”. Takoda interrupted with. “Trust me bro”.
“No big deal”. Doctor Mitsubishi said. “He is good as new. I was able to remove all the little shards of glass that were in his arms. He does not need stiches, so you won’t have to worry about that. I got him all wrapped up, but he should be able to remove that in no time. So as long as he does not get any tattoos on that arm, he should be good to go”.
“Good to hear”. Wiyot said. “Glad you’re alright Halian”.
“Thanks Wiyot”. Halian said.
“Now if you would excuse me”. Doctor Mitsubishi butted in with. “I do have another patient that needs to be attended to. The examination room must be cleared”.
“Sure thing”. Takoda said as he helped Halian get done from the examination table as he, Halian, Wiyot, Calian, and Arnold made their exit. After Takoda was outside the examination room and was about to make a left he felt a tug on his shoulder shoulder.
“Hey”. Penny said as Takoda turned around.
“Hey”. Takoda said, as he regained any lost composure he had back.
“So um, how long are you going to be in town”.
“Probably until tomorrow morning, what’s up?”
“Well, there’s this party at this frat house that a friend of mine lives at and if you want you and your friends can come”.
“That would be cool”. Takoda said with a bright smile on his face.
“I’ll give you my number”. Penny said, her right arm extended for Takoda’s phone”.
“You see, that’s in progress”. Takoda said.
“You don’t have a phone?” Penny asked.
“I prefer to keep a low profile you know what I’m saying?”
“But how do people contact you?”
“They know how to reach me”.
“That’s wild”.
“Why do you think that”.
“I guess I couldn’t imagine life without my cell phone”.
“But what is life?” Takoda asked, leaning in closer towards Penny. “It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset”.
Takods sat there, his left arm extended beside Penny right ear and staring into his left eye with his right eye. Her eyes were a distinct green that twinkled with the right twinge of light. Penny regained herself, kept her focus on Takoda and let out a sly grin.
“Yeah”. Penny said. “I get what you mean”.
