บท 8: In My Life Part 4
“What’s going on?” Halian asked as he peeked through the metal bars where he saw a worn out and scratched up Wiyot and Calian.
“Nothing good”. Takoda said. “Hey! You need help?”
“No”. Calian answered from down below in the cell. “Everything is all well and good. We’re fine being behind bars”.
“You think he’s serious?” Halian asked.
“Maybe about the art of sarcasm”. Takoda said.
“Not to disturb the lesson plan”. Calian interrupted. “But as you can see, we could use your assistance”.
“What is this place?” Takoda asked.
“I’d like to know that myself”.
“Gotcha. Sounds like we’re kinda fucked”.
“The building is guarded”. Halian said, walking back from the corner. “Maybe we could try to get in?”
“Hmph”. Takoda said. “I think I know a way to go about that”.
Halian rang the buzzer the door, back in his human form as two men came to answer. Both were tall security guard types with an intimidating no nonsense kind of vibe to them. Nevertheless, Halian held strong and went into playing the role that he needed to play with this plan.
“Hi sir!” Halian greeted the security guards, with an extra dose of innocence.
“What do you want kid?” Security guard #1 asked.
“My older brother is hurt!”. Halian said, moving to left to show Takota down on the ground, favoring his knee. “Can you help him?”
“I don’t know who you think we are kid”. Security guard #2 said. “But a doctor’s office we ain’t”.
“But sir, he can’t walk far enough to get to the doctor’s office, and we don’t have enough money to get a ride there!”
“That sounds like a problem for the two of you two solve”. Security guard #1 said.
“But sir please!” Halian pleaded. “He’s all I got, and I can’t have him hurt! Please sir! You’ve got to help us!”
The security guards turned and looked at each other, Halian standing there with his eyes wide open. They then turned back and looked at Halian and then looked at Takoda. They tried to turn their gaze away again but ended up focusing their eyes back on the two.
Halian and Takoda found themselves inside the building where they began to piece together that this was not just some normal place. They saw all different kinds of animals being held in cages, what appeared to be interrogation rooms. The animals all had a down beaten look and vibe to them as Halian and Takoda took it all in.
“Step inside there kid”. Security guard #1 said. “I think we got some first aid kits there”.
“Thank you so much sir!” Halian said.
“Yeah, yeah”. Security guard #1 said. “Just get in there”.
Halian and Takoda entered the room which was just a blank white room. There was an examination table next to the window, a sink to the right, and a desk to the right of the seat with two green chairs by the door. Halian and Takoda both were cautious in how they appeared and the movements they made. Takoda looked around and saw a vent, which gave him an idea.
“Keep it steady”. Takoda said as he transformed into his owl form.
“Where are you going?”
“To break those guys out”.
“But what am I supposed to do?”
“Just stall! I won’t be too long. Promise!”
Takoda cracked the vent open with his talons and made his way through. Halian sat there on the bench. Takoda began to make progress in the vent. After a dark long crawl, he saw an opening and spotted Wiyot and Calian. Calian was in his human form where Wiyot was still in his owl form. Takoda transformed back into his human form and busted the vent wide open.
“Ayo!” Takoda said. “What it do?”
“Oh shit”. Calian said. “The moon was blue last night”.
“Don’t act like you know me! C’om! Let’s go!”
Calian turned back into an owl and flew up into the vent with Wiyot and tow. The three of them made their way through the vent as they looked for any kind of exit that they could find. After another dark long crawl, they came across a vent that led to the back of the building where the dumpsters were.
“You guys can get out here”. Takoda told Wiyot and Calian. “I’ll go get the kid”.
“Yeah, whatever”. Calian said as he and Wiyot jumped out.
Takoda got back in the vent and went back in the direction of the security guards. Once close by, he could hear Halian stalling. Takoda spotted an empty nest that was in the vent. The nest was a good size and was made up of straw, sticks, and hay. Takoda examined the nest inside and out before looking up towards where Halian’s voice resonated from.
“So um, yeah that’s kind of how I decided to try skateboarding”. Halian said the two security guards whose patience was growing thin.
“Where the hell is your brother?” Security guard #2 demanded to know.
Then the fire alarm and sprinklers went out. The building erupted in chaos as everyone started to freak out as the security guards became confused. Halian ran out, missing one of the security guard’s grabs. Halian then made a mad dash for the door as everyone around him allowed the craziness and uncertainty to take over in the building.
“Hey kid”. Calian said. “Good job not dying”.
