Halian looked at Sheila and averted his eyes away from her. He took a glance around and spotted the bright blood red exit sign to his right. He turned his sight back and noticed that Sheila had not moved an inch. She was hovering over him with a calm, yet warm smile on her face, wearing a dark burgundy trench coat over her woman suit, her lips covered in a sharp redish purple tone.
“Why?” Halian asked.
“No need to think too much of it”. Sheila began. “Just want to know a few things about you”.
“Like what?”
“For starters, what’s your name?”
“You go first”.
“It’s Sheila”.
“Halian”.
“Nice to meet you Halian. You seem like a nice young man”.
“I mean, I try to be”.
“Then you are effortless”.
“…Why are you following us?”
“The details of this situation are rather complex”.
“Can you explain it to me?”
Sheila gazed upon Halian and studied him a bit. She twisted her face up a bit before she returned back to her normal expression. She dwelled into Halian’s eyes and stood there a few seconds before she decided to open her mouth just to close it back up.
“Well, can you?”
“When you were a little one did you ever play spies?” Sheila asked.
“Yeah, I think so”.
“Remember how you would get briefed on what happened and what you needed to do? Sometimes, you are on a top-secret mission and cannot tell anyone what you are doing”.
“You’re a spy?”
“I’m not saying that. But my reason for being here is confidential”.
“Why is it confidential?”
“Because if you knew then I’d have to kill you”.
Halian paused and could just stare at Sheila. He looked into her eyes as a coldness radiated in the midst of her inherent beauty. Halian found himself lost for but a moment within her vortex before he was able to break free. He then changed his eye contact with her as his facial expression became firmer.
“I want to take the risk”. Halian said.
“Can I help you?” Wiyot asked as he walked up to Halian and Sheila.
“You’re with him?” Sheila asked.
“Yes. Who are you?”
“Sheila Takahashi. And you?”
“Wiyot”.
“Wiyot, I was just curious if you have seen anything out of the ordinary the last few hours?”
“That’s a random a question, isn’t it?”
“Yes, but hence the “out of the ordinary” part of the question”.
“…Nothing comes to mind”.
“I see”. Sheila said as she took her wallet out of her purse. She then pulled out her business card and hand it to Wiyot. “If you do see something out of the ordinary then please, give me a call”.
Sheila looked over at Halian before she stepped away. Wiyot studied her as she fell out of sight. Wiyot stood there and looked to his left and to his right before he looked down to Halian. He then looked out into the distance, Sheila long gone.
“What was she asking you?” Wiyot asked.
“She said she had some questions for me, but she never asked them. I was trying to find out why she was following us”.
“What did she tell you?”
“That if she told me that she would have to kill me”.
Wiyot’s eyebrows raised and his eyes widen over what Halian reported. He then shook himself out of it and turned back to the direction that Sheila walked away in. His fists began to clench as Halian stood beside him to his left with his pu[ipls in the corners of his eyes turned towards Wiyot.
“Are you okay Wiyot?” Halian asked.
“Yeah”. Wiyot said. “I’m fine. Let’s get back to the others”.
Wiyot and Halian walked back outside to Arnold’s pickup truck which was at gas stall number seven. Nobody is at the truck as the two of them approached the vehicle. In the corner of his eye Wiyot could see that Greg was walking towards his car. There was a person in the front seat that turned out to be Sheila. Wiyot leaned against the truck as he stared out into the distance,
“Yo!” Takoda said.
“Where’s Calian?” Halian asked.
“He’s with Arnold in that wannabe convenience store”.
“We got to get out of here”. Wiyot said.
“What’s going on with you Wiyot?” Takoda asked. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost”.
“We just have to leave, okay?”
“Well, I think that’s them right now”. Halian said.
Sure enough it was Calian and Arnold. Arnold had a large fountain drink filled with Cola. Calian had bought a new pack of red cigarette and two packs of orange flavored gum. While those two walked back up to the truck, Wiyot noticed that Greg and Sheila had left where they were parked. He looked around and could not see any traces of them at all.
“You’re on the prowl huh?” Calian commented.
“You ready to go?” Wiyot asked.
“Why are you in such a hurry? I thought I you were the stop and smell the roses type?”
“There aren’t many roses here right now, so I think it’s best that we get going”.
“He’s right, we won’t make good time otherwise”. Arnold said.
“Whatever”. Calian said. “I’m just along for the ride”.
“Shotgun”. Wiyot said.
“C’om!” Takoda cried out. “No fair!”
Wiyot got in the front passenger’s seat as Calian, Takoda, and Halian all cramped in the back seat. Arnold was of course in the driver’s seat as he started the car and began to take off. Wiyot took in all that was around the perimeter and saw nothing but the cars that were stopped at the rest stations and the cars that were driving by on the outside.
They all continued to drive off with no other cars on the road. Wiyot saw the green hills that swallowed all of them as Arnold continued to drive on. Wiyot checked the back of the car where he was able to see that Halian was asleep, Takoda was half asleep, and Calian was wide awake, sitting in the middle. Wiyot nodded his head at him. Calian returned the favor.
Once he turned back, Wiyot relaxed his muscles and sank into his seat. He looked out of the front windshield and saw nothing but a bright, blue, and radiant sky. He took one long deep breath before letting it out and closing his eyes.
“Oh shit”. Arnold said, looking up at his review mirror which was filled with a grey car tailgating them”. Looks like we have company.
