"Can you still hear her cries? First for her friend, begging for her Rei to be freed from her captor?" Kai flared his Quirk even further, pushing out with his rage. He walked up to All Might until he was right in his face. "Do you remember her years later, asking for help for her son? The first time, you just did nothing. The second time, you said she was crazy. Maybe she was, but she was also right. Was I not proof enough then? Am I not proof enough now?"
"I never said she was-"
"SHE WAS A TELEPATH! YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO! DON'T TELL ME YOU NEVER EVEN BOTHERED TO KNOW WHO SHE WAS! DON'T TELL ME YOU NEVER-" Kai cut himself off, finally losing control for a moment. He raised one palm toward the ceiling and closed his eyes, taking deep breaths to calm down. He had to be calm.
"No, I can't blame you for wanting to dismiss her. If I had been in your shoes and been told that the antichrist was born, and that he was your best bet at staving off an apocalypse, I wouldn't have wanted to believe either."
Kai paused, letting the light fade from his eyes.
"It's absolutely batsh*t insane. But that's also reality. I make for greater possibilities. I just can't do it alone. And time and time again, you have continued to disappoint. So I can only look to the next generation, my generation, for help. But if you are the best teacher, they will all be dead before I can ask them for help with so much as a papercut. I need help. I need soldiers. I need heroes, and you are not someone I can trust with that job.
"'Symbol of Peace?' Don't flatter yourself. You have caused far more suffering than you are worth. I count at least fifty innocents whose blood is directly on your hands for your carelessness.
"Do you remember Carrie Hunter, who you orphaned by trying to lift a whole pile of rubble from the top? You may have heard four voices crying for help, but out of the collapse you caused, only that little girl survived. Because your raw strength is all you have."
Kai looked closely at All Might and could see that his words had even more effect than he was going for. If his eyes didn't deceive him, All Might was not only shrinking back in the figurative, but the literal too. Some things about Carrie Hunter were just conjecture, but Kai's accusation still hit home. So, he pressed his advantage.
"Do you remember Keitaro Nakamura, who committed suicide three years ago? I don't know what you said to him, but I know it didn't help at all. You didn't even refer him to anyone for the help he needed, thinking that since you had been there, things were better.
"Do you at least know how many times you punched a villain across town and into somebody's house?
"Do you think about the Quirkless, or those who are nearly so, who are ridiculed for being so far from the great All Might? People in this world have forgotten to honor heroes. They just enjoy the spectacle of the powerful fighting each other."
"That's not-"
"Isn't it, though? How many heroes are famous for not fighting? For protecting? For finding? For healing? Too few. And those that are, are generally famous for always being close to the one who punched out the villain of the day. You only get known by being part of the spectacle. When my mom was known as Relay, was she known? Then when she went freelance and gave tips to the police, did they get to know and trust her? No. They largely ignored her, or at least waited too long to act on what she said.
"That's why she made sure that I would protect those that they would not. She made sure that of all the things that I am, I am one that will act to save. Sure, I became a monster. I have killed a lot of people. I've dabbled in torture. But I never caused a death by negligence. I am not like you. And thank goodness for that."
After a moment of thought, Kai reached into his pocket and pulled out one of the remotes he had stuck in his pocket before the trials started.
"Do you know what this is?" he asked in a much calmer tone. "This was supposed to be your insurance against me. How to use it was supposed to be in that packet, but I guess I'll tell you now. If you hold this button for three seconds, then this one, you can send a cocktail of neurotoxin directly into my spine." Kai pulled his coat to better show the collar around his neck. "Theoretically, it knocks me out. Or it could kill me. Or it might not be enough. This button sends another dose to finish the job either way."
Kai tossed the remote to All Might. Everyone watched it go across the room, wide-eyed. Then back to Kai as Bob was dismissed, vanishing into the floor.
"If you want to stop me from talking, you may use it any time. If something like this happens again, I hope you will not hesitate. I figure you wouldn't have the guts to pop my head like a grape, so here is a better solution. After all, to stop me from talking, you will have to kill me. You will not be able to stop what I have to say.
"Class, here is my final lesson. Quirk Synergy. Look at Yagi now. Can you see how he is different from the beginning of class? He is shorter. Less buff. Weaker. His Quirk is an Emitter type, and I hit the power down button. There is one state in which all Quirks become powerless: depression. In this case, a combination of guilt and grief. If I kept going, I could carve out his heart with a paper clip.
"As far as I can tell, he has never talked with anyone about the innocent blood on his hands. Never went through the therapy that most heroes go through after their first loss. He never addressed his faults and the criminal negligence of his career because that would have shown the Symbol of Peace as just a man, when he wanted to be seen as more. As a god, even. And how do you kill a god? You turn him mortal.
"Everyone has a weakness. Every Quirk, every hero has a flaw. If they are human, they can be defeated. Nobody is too powerful. So be ready to strengthen your hearts and minds, and talk things out with someone," he finished wearily.
Kai reached into his pocket and pulled out the second remote with a rueful smile.
"I'm so sorry you had to see this side of me," he said, bowing deeply to the class. "I will try to regain your trust, but I understand if you don't want to be near a monster. I will do whatever it takes to be sure all of you will survive, even if I must be hated. You are under my protection.
"I do hope that we will be able to work together, such that I don't have to kill anyone for power. Ayako would hate it if I started that again. If you have any further questions, ask her. She knows my lessons as well as I do. Now, since I've been a villain, I think it is about time that evil is defeated," Kai said, straightening and pressing the first button on the remote. "And Bakago, I will deal with you later."
Kai hit the activation button on the remote. For a second, nothing happened. Even Kai thought that the remote, or perhaps the collar, was faulty. He was getting ready to hit the double dose button when all of a sudden, his vision blurred. Then, he lost his sense of balance. As he leaned against the wall again, he felt the urge to wipe his nose. In doing so, he looked at his hand, and realized it was blood.
"Damn, that's some good stuff. Arachne, pick me up."
With that he collapsed, unconscious.
Nobody even had time to react before a pair of long claws reached down through the hole in the ceiling that had been made by Bob before. As they hooked onto Kai's clothes, a voice resounded in everyone's minds, along with a pressure they all could feel on their souls. The voice sounded like a raspy old woman's, but at the same time, it felt inhuman.
"Insolent Terrans, my lord has given you leave to return to the class room. I shall not harm you. Even unconscious, my lord's will is unbreakable, even for the stupid loud one. Large one, you lead. I shall remain and awaken my lord. I trust we have shown our intentions. Now, go."
Kai's body was lifted through the hole and the voice faded away. Scraping sounds could be heard as something large walked out of the building.
Do you think Hades would be proud? Maybe Joker, Green Goblin and Lex Luthor, too, as Kai would directly attribute his decision to go for the heart to learning from them.
While the direct evidence is made up by me, I find it very likely. The idea about the suicidal kid came up after reading a Deadpool comic where he saved a suicidal kid. Don't remember the title, really should have kept that tabbed. Good read, though. A case where the hero recognized he was grossly unqualified and passed her on to trained professional doctors.
Meanwhile, I don't see All Might as doing that as he has basically zero intelligence based feats. I almost want to say he has low enough stats to roll a critical fail with a 20, but I don't actually play DnD to know if that's even possible. But he doesn't even know how his Quirk works. He's had it for upwards of 25 years, and doesn't know half of what it does, or how to teach Deku how to use it.
Oh, and the moment where he acknowledges Bakugo is going for the kill, and then allows the fight to continue.
And as for why Kai would compare Bakugo's attack with Hitler: man obsessively hateful against a specific race of humans uses it to rise to power, and then decides to turn on his allies and do it at the worst time with an audience of enemies watching everything. Basically Hitler against Russia. I mean, there is a Wikipedia page about "General Winter" about how bad it is to invade Russia in the winter, at least in the past when travel wasn't so easy.
Lastly, this isn't putting much more darkness into the world. Todoroki's backstory shows that this isn't much further than what is already canon.
Well, that's all for today.
