Chapter 32
My face turned scarlet and I stuttered, "Beth, don't talk nonsense, I..."
Princess Alaska didn't seem to mind, but smiled at me and started, "Dory, please forgive me for the distress I have caused you. To tell the truth, Theo and I are only pretending to be together, we both have an understanding. I don't want to get married at all right now. I've just graduated from college, and I want to work and travel around the world. I will eventually find someone I would like to marry; I'll not have a marriage arranged by my father, and I'll not be marrying King Theo either."
I swallowed the sandwich that was in my mouth whole when I heard what Princess Alaska had just said, how could this be happening?
Princess Alaska picked gracefully raised her cup to her lips and took a sip of tea, before she continued, "Although King Theo is clearly very charming, there's no chemistry between us, so we made a deal: I pretend to be with him, to ensure the smooth signing of a treaty with my father to help him deal with Paul and those who are opposing him; at the same time he will help me to escape to the human world so that I can live there, where my father can never find me."
Sensing my confusion, Beth explained, "Now that Paul is dead, Theo's worst enemy is gone, so he can now send Alaska to me and pretend that Alaska has run away on her own without his knowledge. You will see the newspaper headlines with a picture of Theo's sad face: 'Unlucky King finds Beloved gone before he's able to Propose'."
The three of us laughed heartily.
"Dory, are you in a much better mood now?" Beth asked me while refilling my teacup with some freshly brewed tea.
I replied with a shy "mm". I now really regretted being angry with Theo, but why didn't he tell me the truth? I wished I could go back right now and ask him.
I turned to Alaska next to me. "Princess Alaska, thank you so much for telling me the truth. So will you be marrying some human later on?" I joked.
"You never know, I find human men quite interesting, or at least I would consider dating them," Alaska replied mischievously.
"It seems that we werewolf women fancy human men," I suggested, giving Beth a teasing glance; I was in such a good mood now that I was joking with Beth.
"No, Sweetie, you should say that human men fancy we werewolf women and they easily fall in love with us." Beth's words made laugh, she was always so funny and optimistic, she was such a lovable woman.
We talked until early evening. As I was going to leave, Beth took my hand and said, "Sweetie, you take care."
I gave her a hug, "I will, you've been so good to me."
Then I addressed Alaska, "Princess Alaska, I'm deeply sorry I misunderstood you before, I really hope we can become friends and I wish you all the very best."
Alaska took my hand and said, "I like you too, and I hope we can meet again in the future. But you know my brother adores you, and I can't imagine the look on his face if he knew you were a pretty girl."
I had almost forgotten about Adrian, and I asked, "Does he know what's really going on with you and Theo?"
Alaska replied, "He knows. He's my closest brother, and he encouraged me to run away. But I didn't know your true identity until Beth told me, so I haven't had a chance to tell him yet. You might want to tell him yourself," and winked at me.
I waved goodbye to them both and drove back to London for the night's activities. Having waited until eleven o'clock, I arrived at the lab that Peter used to visit. The lab was to be found in the typical industrial business park that one would see on the outskirts of the city.
It was very quiet at this time of night, and except for the lights running along the side of the road, it was dark all around. I parked my car in a secluded place a block away from the lab, and then quietly made my way to the front door of the building that contained the lab.
It seemed very strange to me that the neighbouring office buildings had their security lights on that night, but there was not a single light on in this building.
I didn't get hung up about this as I used a special tool to disable the security system on the door with a minimum of fuss, and then I slipped into the lab under the cover of darkness.
I looked around with the help of my flashlight and quickly realized that the lab was in a complete mess, as if the occupants had hurriedly moved out.
"No!" I whispered to myself, "I've been ambushed!"
I hurried to escape, but when I got to the door, I realized that it had been firmly locked and I couldn't get out.
What followed was a barrage of gunfire that was clearly intended for me, and I hastily retreated to an empty room.
I could hear someone shouting, "Capture him alive."
I heard the sound of a door being kicked in, and it was obvious that these people were searching for the rooms one by one.
I did have a gun, but I knew that there were many people outside roaming the corridors and blocking my exit. It was going to be impossible for me to escape alone; what could I do?
Suddenly I heard a voice emerging from the corner of my room, "It must be fate – fancy seeing you again so soon!"
I directed my flashlight towards the source of the voice, only to see a figure with a mask over his face. While I couldn't see his face, his accent reminded me of someone I had met before – it was unmistakably an Australian voice, and it was Alan the street performer.
He was crouching in the corner, holding an Ipad in his hands and focusing on typing, as if nothing were going on outside.
As I heard the footsteps outside the door getting closer and closer, I decided not to talk to him as I needed to rush out and fight my captors.
"You're going to die if you do that. Follow me, and I'll get you out." His voice sounded relaxed as he calmly placed his iPad in his backpack.
Can I trust this guy, I asked myself. He's so calm, can he stop these people from shooting me with his mind control?
He came up next to me, handed me a mask and ordered me, "Put it on quickly!" before he led me by my hand, opened the door to the room and threw a small object outside into the corridor.
The next thing I saw was smoke all around, and one of my would-be captors exclaimed, "What's going on - this stinks!" He and his companions started to cough uncontrollably.
Even with my mask on, I could still smell a little of that sickening smell. There was another hail of bullets, but now it seemed that our adversaries didn't know our exact location and were simply shooting wildly.
Alan pulled me towards the door, pressed his hand against the card scanner beside the door, which opened as if by magic, and we dashed out of the building.
When our adversaries found that we escaped, they rushed after us, but the door had already locked again. I didn't know what kind of magic Alan has used, but they were finally locked inside and unable to get out.
"It was just a coincidence that I met you this time, I didn't predict it. I'll see you later," said Alan, as he mounted his motorcycle and disappeared in a flash.
I didn't have a chance to respond, but I leapt into my car and jammed the key into the ignition. The car's powerful engine roared to life with a mighty growl, and I slammed my foot on the gas pedal, pushing the car to absolute limit as I sped away from the scene.
Once I finally felt I was safe, I had some time to think about Alan, the magician who had just saved my life. Who the hell was he? But he seemed harmless enough.
