I shared the general SF dreams as a child, over 40 years ago. I never expected to play any significant part in it.
It wasn't too hard to say "good bye" to stars, but...
I never wished for a lot more, than I had - as a child. Moscow's a part (was a capital) of the Third World. So, you'd call us really poor. But I was better off than some 90% of children around - and that's what's matters, really.
The funny thing is, when you are really poor, but relatively reach - you don't have a lot of personal dreams. Some more gadgets? Right. But we do have 'em all around the world now. Dirt cheap - for the most part, too. No problem here.

The problem is... there are things I didn't dream about. I took 'em for granted. I just expected to see more freedom and less violence around every year. It isn't the loss of dreams, it's the loss of this reality of 70-s that was painful...
