Chapter 49: Emergence of the Zerg!

Tom's death was completely unexpected or Alex. Although, to be honest, Alex didn't have much affection for this world.

But after all, Tom played the role of a hero, so Alex planned to have a proper talk with him. However, unexpectedly, as soon as Tom heard Alex mention the word "ability," he decisively shot himself. He probably feared that Alex would dissect him... Sigh, this shows that being too accustomed to certain things isn't always good.

The protagonist was dead. For this, Alex could only offer three seconds of silence. What else could he do? The guy wanted to die, and he couldn't stop him.

With Tom's death, the entire plot of "Edge of Tomorrow" was undoubtedly ruined. But Alex didn't care; he never planned to follow the protagonist's path anyway, so whether Tom lived or died didn't matter much to him. In fact, it didn't matter much to humanity either, because right now... things were already as bad as they could get.

The beach landing troops were once again annihilated by alien monsters. Without the protagonist's ability to reset the timeline, the aliens directly crossed the channel and destroyed all of London.

Through live-streaming on his phone, Alex could see that the entire city was engulfed in flames, and then the screen cut off.

Although he couldn't see what was happening firsthand, Alex could already predict the outcome.

In the following days, these mimic aliens could be said to be launching attacks everywhere, with full-scale invasions.

Europe had essentially fallen, and humanity was retreating step by step. After wiping out the remaining resistance forces in Europe, these alien monsters began advancing eastward, towards Alex's location.

It was almost time.

Through the internet, Alex had grasped the situation on Earth quite well. Europe had fallen, and other places were also engulfed in war. The United States was too busy with its own troubles, and Asia and Europe were struggling to hold on. Humanity was at the brink of life and death. According to the usual script, this was when the savior should appear.

However, this savior didn't look much like one.

"Master."

Just as Alex was observing the battlefield on his phone and daydreaming, Miruune approached him.

"The enemy is about to reach the front lines and is currently engaging with human forces."

"What's the situation?"

Alex wasn't surprised by Miruune's report. He had known for days that a joint force from Russia and China had arrived here and established a defensive line to fend off the approaching mimic army.

Alex had observed this but hadn't made contact with them. He even ordered his massive Zerg army to burrow underground to avoid scaring the humans with their presence.

"Humans are retreating step by step. It's only a matter of time before they are completely annihilated."

"Good."

Hearing Miruune's report, Alex nodded in satisfaction. Then he turned off his phone and stood up.

"Miruune, do you know why humans like superheroes?"

"Superheroes? Are those the beings from the stories you told before, Master? I think it's because of their immense power, and humans must desire such power greatly."

That was a very Zerg-like answer... but it was also true for many humans. Perhaps the similarities between Zerg and humans were more than Alex had imagined.

"That's part of it, but more importantly, superheroes always appear at the most desperate and helpless moments, giving people something more precious than life—hope."

"Praying for the assistance of powerful individuals is a sign of weakness, Master."

However, Miruune was clearly indifferent to this concept. Although she looked like a human girl, she was still a Zerg at heart.

"Weaklings only need to obey; they have no right to pray."

"That's the difference between Zerg and humans."

Alex didn't intend to convince Miruune otherwise. For the Zerg, the only value of a powerful being was to kill it, devour its genetic sequence, and merge its power into their own bodies to become stronger.

This was a characteristic of Zerg civilization. Trying to convince them otherwise was as futile as trying to persuade a tiger to eat vegetables. So, Alex didn't dwell on Miruune's response.

"But in any case, less trouble is always better. It's time for us to act, Miruune. Prepare for the attack!"

"As you wish, Master."

At the front lines, the situation was already chaotic.

"Captain Wang!"

A soldier in a mechanical exoskeleton trudged through the sand and approached an officer, wiping the blood off his face.

"What are the orders from command?!"

"Command orders us to hold the line! This defense is the most crucial barrier to the east and must not fall!"

The officer known as Captain Wang raised his right hand, aiming into the dust ahead, and pulled the trigger.

A stream of bullets shot out from the machine gun attached to his arm, shredding an alien mimic emerging from the sand into pieces.

"We don't have enough men; we can't hold this position. How's the situation on Monkaresky's side?"

"They're still holding on!!"

"Boom!!"

Before Captain Wang could finish his sentence, a violent explosion erupted. Both men quickly turned to look at the source of the blast, only to see a fireball rising into the sky from the ground.

"Damn, that's Position 215. They must have fallen!!"

Seeing this, Captain Wang's face turned ashen. He immediately opened communications and called out loudly.

"This is Position 128. Can anyone hear me? If you can hear me, please respond! Damn it..."

When no response came, Captain Wang angrily ripped off his helmet and threw it aside. He then raised his weapon and looked ahead.

At that moment, mimics started emerging from the sand. Sensing that their enemies were at the end of their rope, the mimics began screeching triumphantly at the soldiers in front of them.

"You monsters! We will never give up or retreat! Everyone, step forward!"

With Captain Wang's roar, the remaining soldiers, their faces set with determination, stepped forward and raised their guns.

"If you want to get past here, you'll have to walk over our corpses, monsters!!"

"———————!"

Hearing Captain Wang's furious shout, the alien creatures also opened their mouths in anger, letting out roars. But in the next moment, contrary to what everyone expected, the aliens did not charge forward. Instead, they started to retreat.

"This... what's going on?"

"What's happening, Captain Wang?"

Seeing this, everyone was stunned. They had been ready to die here. If those mimics had charged just now, they would have surely died.

But to everyone's surprise, the creatures didn't charge. Instead, they retreated? Could their captain be so intimidating that a single roar could scare off the enemy?

"I don't know either."

Raising his gun, Captain Wang was just as confused. He looked at the monsters in front of him, not understanding what was going on. But as he looked closely, he was surprised to find that the creatures seemed very... nervous?

Nervous?

Captain Wang's eyes widened as he looked at the monsters, even rubbing his eyes and looking again.

Sure enough, the creatures appeared agitated, anxious, and tense. They were staring at him, their tentacles almost bristling.

They looked as if they had encountered some terrifying enemy. But there had been no change in their own ranks. They were just regular soldiers. When had these monsters ever been afraid of them?

"Rumble, rumble, rumble..."

It was then that Captain Wang heard a sound coming from behind him. He looked down and was surprised to see the ground trembling slightly. As the sound grew louder, the alien creatures seemed to become more nervous, instinctively retreating and forming a defensive formation.

Defensive? He had fought these creatures his entire life and had never seen them form a defense!

What could be behind them?

"Captain Wang!"

At that moment, a trembling voice called out. Captain Wang turned towards the sound and saw a young soldier nearby, pale-faced and looking back over his shoulder, trembling so much that he seemed about to collapse.

Captain Wang knew him; he was one of the bravest young men under his command, someone who wouldn't flinch even with a gun to his head.

But now, this brave soldier looked like a terrified rookie on his first battlefield, backing away towards the mimics, before his legs gave out and he fell to the ground!

"What's wrong with you? Pull yourself together! What's back there?!"

Shouting loudly, Captain Wang also turned to look behind him.

Then he froze in place.

"My God..."
