Ava
I sat at the desk in Caleb's office, surrounded by stacks of financial records and budget reports. The task of sorting through the mess was daunting, but I was determined to get to the bottom of it. I couldn't shake the feeling that something more sinister was at play.
As I flipped through the records, my eyes caught something unusual. Several transactions didn't add up. I traced the funds, my heart sinking as I realized someone had been redistributing money meant for essential
It didn't take long for the discrepancies to jump out at her. There were fake invoices for services never rendered, and she noticed the inflated costs for supplies that should have been much cheaper. Payroll records revealed ghost employees who never existed, their salaries lining Vincent's pockets. Maintenance and repair expenses were exorbitantly high and clearly exaggerated. Event costs were similarly inflated, and the supposed training programs had suspiciously excessive expenses. Travel expenses for trips that seemed unnecessary or even fictitious, medical supplies that were overreported, and construction projects that never materialized—all pointed to a well-orchestrated siphoning of funds. Consultancy fees, equipment rentals, and utility bills were all manipulated, showing inflated or entirely fabricated costs. Ava's frustration grew as she realized the extent of Vincent's betrayal, her determination to bring him to justice solidifying with each fraudulent entry she uncovered.
I sighed unhappily, knowing I'd have to break this news to Caleb.
"Lily!" I called, needing her to confirm my suspicions. She appeared at the door within moments, concern etched on her face as she looked around at the mess I had created.
"What's wrong, Ava?"
"I need you to take a look at these," I said, pointing to the financial records. "I think someone has been siphoning off funds. Can you double-check this?"
Lily's eyes widened, and she quickly moved to my side, scanning the documents. After a few minutes, she nodded grimly.
"You're right. This doesn't look good."
I ran a hand through my hair, frustration boiling inside me.
"I can't believe someone would do this. It's not just neglect; it's deliberate theft. Who could have let this happen?"
Lily frowned, deep in thought.
"It's hard to say. But whoever it is, they've covered their tracks well. We need to bring this to Caleb's attention."
I nodded, feeling a sense of dread.
"He's not going to be happy about this."
"No, he won't," Lily agreed. "But he needs to know. This is serious." I sighed, closing the ledger.
"You're right. I was just hoping that it was a mistake or an oversight." As we walked towards Caleb in the library, my mind raced with questions. Who could be behind this? Why would they do it? And how deep did the corruption go?
I knocked on Caleb's door, and he looked up from the desk, a curious expression on his face.
"Ava, Lily. What's going on?"I took a deep breath, preparing myself for the difficult conversation.
"Caleb, we've found something concerning in the financial records. It looks like someone has been redistributing funds meant for the garden, livestock, and storage." His eyes narrowed, and he motioned for us to sit.
"Tell me everything." I laid out the documents in front of him, pointing to the suspicious transactions.
"These transactions don't make sense. The money isn't being spent how it says, look here it says new tools were bought and I can verify that those tools never got bought, and it's been happening for months, maybe even years. There are similar transactions for other things that just aren't there. I only went back about three months...I was afraid to uncover more bad news" Caleb's expression darkened as he examined the records.
"This is serious. Do you have any idea who's behind this?"
"We're not sure yet," I admitted. "But it's clear someone has been intentionally mismanaging the funds. We need to investigate further." He nodded, his jaw set in determination.
"We'll get to the bottom of this. I'll call a meeting with the council. In the meantime, keep looking through the records. See if you can find any more clues." Lily and I spent the rest of the day poring over the financial documents, searching for any additional evidence. It was tedious work, but we were driven by the need to uncover the truth.
As the hours passed, we began to piece together a clearer picture. The same name kept appearing in connection with the suspicious transactions: Vincent Merrick. My heart sank as the realization hit me. Vincent, the pack's trusted financial advisor, was behind the embezzlement. I looked up at Lily, who had come to the same conclusion.
"Vincent," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "It has to be him."
I nodded, feeling a mix of anger and betrayal.
"We need to confront him. But we'll need to be careful. If he's been doing this for so long, he'll be desperate to cover his tracks." Lily agreed, determination in her eyes.
"We'll catch him, Ava. We just need to be smart about it."
We spent the next few days gathering more evidence, preparing ourselves for the confrontation. When the time came, we called a meeting with Caleb and the council, presenting our findings. Caleb's face was a mask of controlled fury as we laid out the evidence.
"Vincent Merrick," he said, his voice cold. "He will answer for this betrayal."
The council members murmured in agreement, their expressions hardening. Vincent was summoned, and as he entered the room, I saw a flicker of fear in his eyes.
"Ava, Lily, would you care to explain why we're here?" Caleb asked, his gaze never leaving Vincent. I stepped forward, holding the stack of documents.
"Vincent, we have evidence that you've been embezzling funds from the pack. These records show a clear pattern of financial misconduct." Vincent's face paled, but he tried to maintain his composure.
"This is ridiculous. I've done no such thing."
"The evidence is clear," Caleb said, his voice icy. "You've betrayed our trust and endangered the well-being of the pack." Vincent's mask of calm cracked, and he sneered.
"You don't understand. I deserve more than this pack has given me. I was only taking what I was owed."
"Your greed and betrayal have cost us dearly," I said, my voice steady. "You're no longer welcome here." The council members murmured in agreement, their expressions hardening as they looked at Vincent. Caleb stepped forward, his eyes flashing with anger.
"As punishment for your crimes, you will be imprisoned in the fortified cell," Caleb announced. "You will be isolated and deprived of any comforts. Additionally, you will be branded as a traitor, a permanent reminder of your betrayal." Vincent's eyes widened in horror.
"No, please. You can't do this to me."
"You brought this upon yourself," Caleb replied, his voice cold. "This is the consequence of your actions."
The pack watched as Vincent was led away, his pleas for mercy falling on deaf ears. The brand of a traitor would forever mark him, a warning to anyone who dared to betray the pack again. With Vincent imprisoned and the funds restored, the pack began to heal and rebuild.
I implemented stronger financial oversight and transparency to prevent future corruption. The garden, livestock, and storage areas thrived under my new leadership, and the pack moved forward, stronger.
Caleb
I watched the video feed from the security cameras, my eyes fixed on the screen as Vincent was led to the dungeon. The betrayal still stung, but seeing him in chains provided a small measure of satisfaction. The guards escorted him through the dimly lit corridors, their expressions hard and unyielding. As they reached his cell, one of the guards spoke up.
"What's your favorite meal, Vincent?" Vincent, looking wary but trying to maintain a semblance of dignity, replied,
"Steak, medium rare, with mashed potatoes and green beans." The guard nodded and locked Vincent in the cell. A while later, they returned with a tray holding a perfectly cooked steak, creamy mashed potatoes, and crisp green beans. Vincent eyed the meal hungrily, his greed overtaking his caution. He devoured the food, savoring every bite. As he finished, Vincent finally looked up, his curiosity piqued.
"Why are you giving me such good food?" he asked, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. The guards exchanged glances and then burst into laughter.
"We aren't savages, Vincent. You get to have your last meal." Vincent's face paled, and he stared at the empty tray in horror.
"Last meal? What do you mean?" The lead guard stepped closer, his expression serious.
"The Alpha will come by to see you later. You'll find out then." The guards laughed knowing my true orders. I leaned back in my chair, feeling a mix of satisfaction and grim determination. Vincent's fate was sealed, and his actions would serve as a stark warning to anyone else who thought they could betray the Darkmoon Pack. I turned off the video feed and prepared myself for the confrontation to come.
