-----(Sometime after the exam, in the Underground Observation Room)------
"The scores for the practical exams are out." One of the teaching staff in the room remarked.
"Seriously, what the hell kind of a score is that...?" Another commented.
Everyone in the room had their eyes on the large screen with some names ranked from 1 to 10 listed on it.
At the very top of the list was:
1. Yasuo Kurogami
2. Katsuki Bakugo
3. Eijiro Kirishima
4. Ochaco Uraraka
5. Ibara Shiozaki
6. Itsuka Kendo
7. Iida Tenya
8. Izuku Midoriya
9. Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu
10. Fumikage Tokoyami
"What an uneven ratio between his Villain and Rescue Points." Vlad King pointed out, referring to Kurogami Yasuo's displayed points.
All Might, in his deflated form, who was there as well, smiled when he saw his successor's name on the list as well. Although Young Midoriya had received 0 Villain Points, the Rescue Point system he had deliberately not told him pulled him up to number 8, with a total of 60 points.
But what truly shocked him was the number 1 ranked examinee on the list. Even he himself, when he participated in U.A.'s practical exams, did not have such a high Rescue Point tally. It was a truly inspiring sight to witness.
'Midoriya, you will have to try your hardest to compete with this boy...'
"The difference between number 1 and number 2 is not even comparable!" Vlad King continued.
"Bakugo Katsuki, 77 Villain Points and 0 Rescue Points, huh... Looks like a battle maniac to me." Cementoss added.
"And on the other end of the spectrum, number 8, Midoriya Izuku, with 0 Villain Points and 60 Rescue Points. One of only two examinees this year who has taken down the 'Gimmick'." Snipe remarked.
'He was considerably damaged by his own attack as well, wasn't he?' Aizawa, the Erasure Hero, thought to himself at the back of the room, annoyed at the commotion the other teachers were making. 'Someone like that, who would only injure himself after saving just one person and become a burden to his comrades. He... doesn't have what it takes to become a hero!' Aizawa ruthlessly concluded.
'Compared to number 1 on other hand. Someone who is just like All Might...but at least this kid looks smarter than that reckless idiot.'
-----(Timeskip 1 week)-----
"Yasu-chan! It's here! Your letter from U.A.!" Kurogami Fumiko exclaimed, rushing into her son's room, only to see the odd sight of her son floating cross-legged in mid air with his eyes closed while the air around him blurred like the area above a fire.
What should have been a strange sight for any other parent was ignored by Fumiko, who by now was used to her son doing strange things in his room.
Yasuo opened his eyelids and the air that had been blurry around his figure returned to normal as his levitating body descended.
Before his mother had so rudely barged into his room, Yasuo had been experimenting with layering his barriers on top of one another. After witnessing the terrifying might of the colossal, zero-point faux villain, it had Yasuo wondering if his barrier could hypothetically have stopped the gigantic robot.
A punch coming from that gargantuan construct, with all of its few thousand tons of weight behind it... Yasuo had the feeling that his barrier would have been shattered with ease.
Then he had the thought: if one barrier couldn't stop it, maybe many barriers together could. Apes together strong, after all.
So he started experimenting layering his barriers together. The thickness of the barrier made no difference to its strength, so even if it was paper thin, it would still be as defensively durable as if it was an inch thick. Layering two barriers together was easy; three, four and five similarly effortless. Once he got into the double digits, however, it became more strenuous and requiring more effort to hold them together.
Currently, he had maxed out at 36 layers, with its surface area condensed as much as he could around his body, since the larger the surface area of the barrier, the more energy he would need to sustain it.
"The letter from U.A.? About time." Yasuo commented, taking it from my mother.
"Let's read it together, Yasu-chan!" Fumiko excitedly suggested. She had mentioned to Yasuo before that when she was his age, she applied to U.A. as well. However, her written test scores were not high enough to meet U.A.'s strict criteria, so she settled for another Hero Academy instead. Seeing her son was going to enter U.A. now made her proud and happy on his behalf.
Yasuo shrugged, "Sure."
He telekinetically opened the envelope and to his surprise, there was no letter. Instead, there was a circular device in its place.
"Oh, that's a holographic projector." Fumiko pointed out and placed the device on Yasuo's desk.
A moment later, a large screen was digitally projected from the device, showing All Might's iconic face.
"I AM HERE! As a projection!"
"Wow, it's All Might!" Fumiko gasped. Even though she was once a pro-hero herself, seeing one of the most famous heroes in Japan, nay, the world, still made her feel like she returned to the nostalgic time when she was still a hero in training.
"You must be surprised to see me. Let me explain. I am in town for one reason only - I've come to teach at U.A.!"
Yasuo widened his eyes in surprise. All Might, at U.A.? Amazing! Who wouldn't be excited at the prospect of being taught by the Symbol of Peace himself? The number one ranked hero on the Hero Billboard Chart!
"I'll get right to the point. I'm here to congratulate you - Kurogami Yasuo - on passing U.A. High School's Entrance Exam!" All Might's projection announced with a blinding smile.
"Oh my god! Yasu-chan! You passed, you passed! Mom is so proud of you!" Fumiko cheered, while hugging her son from behind.
Yasuo embarrassedly tried to remove himself from his mother's embrace, "Sheesh, of course I did. did you expect anything less from your son?"
"That's right," All Might continued, "Not only did you pass the exam with flying colours, you went Beyond Plus Ultra with the points you received!"
The projection changed from All Might's face to a short clip of Yasuo at the start of the practical exam crushing a few dozen faux villains all at once and then him flying around to help the other examinees. And just as he thought the clip would culminate with Yasuo controlling the zero-point robot's arm to tear open its own chest. It actually ended with Yasuo's look of concern when tending to Kodai Yui which when displayed to his mother nearly cried from pride at the sight.
"Such an incredible performance surely deserves an equally incredible number of points!" All Might's voice resounded in Yasuo's room before the projection changed again to display two sets of numbers.
"You see, we, the teachers at U.A. High School were not just watching for villain based points! A Hero Course that does not consider those who do the right thing, is no Hero Course at all! We also looked at how you examinees treated the people around you, because... rescue points were also a factor!"
On the projection screen the two sets of number read:
Kurogami Yasuo Tally
Villain Points: 112
Rescue Points: 265
"As you can see, Young Yasuo, you have received a total of... 377 points! Although you did not receive the highest points in U.A. history, the record holder being yours truly, what I am truly proud of is the fact that you did receive the highest number of Rescue Points ever recorded! More than double the previous highest Rescue Points record!"
(Not super sure if All Might did the same Entrance Exam as well, can't find anything about it online. Just go with it.)
Yasuo and his mother looked at the numbers displayed dumbfounded.
"Although you obviously could have gotten more villain points after the initial exhibition of your quirk's incredible might, it was apparent to us that you decided not to monopolize the faux villains in your testing location but chose to go around helping your fellow examinees instead! Such consideration is truly worthy of being praised as a heroic act! Needless to say, you have received first place in the entrance exams!"
"Welcome, Kurogami Yasuo, to U.A.! I look forward to teaching you! And to Fumiko-san, or should I say, the Breath Hero: Lady Wind... If you're seeing this as well, I commend you for raising such a fine son!"
With that last statement, the pre-recorded hologram stopped, and the projection device turned lifeless again.
"H-he, All Might, he remembered me..." Fumiko covered her mouth in pleasant surprise. It wasn't everyday a retired hero was praised by the Symbol of Peace himself after all.
"Good grief mom, you look like a schoolgirl who got asked out by her crush. Dad will be so disappointed." Yasuo teased.
"Brat, didn't you know your dad is an even bigger All Might fan than me? He was saved by him once, y'know?" His mom shot back landing a punch on Yasuo's head.
"I know, I know, he has told me that story like a million times already. Sheesh, it's so embarrassing to have fangirl parents." Yasuo rubbed the spot his mom had smacked.
Fumiko crossed her arms and smiled, "Don't pretend you didn't idolize him as well. Did you forget your All Might pajamas? Well, when you get your Hero License and officially become a pro-hero, I promise we will become your biggest fans instead."
Yasuo made an X with his arms and shook his head, "First off, you bought those pajamas for me. And secondly, no thank you. Having my parents be my biggest fans just sounds sad and lame."
Fumiko's eyebrow twitched, "This brat is getting real mouthy after getting first place in the entrance exams huh? Take this, you ingrate!"
She landed another punch on Yasuo's head, the same spot she had hit before.
"AHH! You violent granny! Help, I'm getting abused by an old lady!"
"Oh, so you're asking for another one? Get over here! Don't you dare fly away from me mister!"
