บท 54: Chapter 54

☆ ☆ Beta Darius ☆ ☆

The figure I saw was my mate. She practically ran to the car when she left the building, werewolves were strong in our human form but not strong enough to overthrow a vampire, even a young one. We thrived in our wolf form where our saliva was venomous to them, and our powerful jaws could decapitate them easily.

"We need to leave now; I heard him call for reinforcements.", she said as she slammed the door. I rushed to the front seat and cranked the SUV. The engine roared to life, and I sped away. Vampires were fast; depending on their age, they could travel anywhere from 80 to140 miles per hour. We had to leave, and leave fast, I would call Alpha Draven once we were on the road and far away from here.

We stopped at our hotel room briefly to grab our belongings before we left for our safety; who knew how many they would send? We went upstairs and locked our door. There was an old wives' tale that vampires could not enter the dwelling unless invited, but I wasn't sure if that was true of hotels as they were public. Either way, I wasn't going to risk it.

Morgana started throwing all the research we had gathered into her bag, along with our clothes. Since my suitcase was still in the car, I decided to carry my belongings that wouldn't fit in her bag out in my hands. Morgana froze and whispered, "They're here and watching us."

We pulled the curtains and dimmed the lights in our room as though we were going to bed. We would have to fight; it was our only chance of survival. We stripped and shifted, heightening our senses and becoming our strongest forms. We waited, crouched for them to attack. Twenty minutes had passed, but we didn't move from our positions.

I was by the side of the bed closest to the window, and Morgana had snuck behind the table for two in the kitchenette. I could hear her breathing start to settle she was calm and primed. I thought for a moment that maybe they couldn't enter. That idea was shattered as easily as one of the massive window panes from the living room area.

I leaped up and chomped down on the first vampire's head, killing him quickly, but more flooded in, attacking me viciously. They bit and clawed at my back and hind legs. Had Morgana not been present, I would have surely died. Morgana lept over the table, grabbing one of their arms in her teeth, and flung him so forcefully she ripped his arm off.

That one was a coward, and he immediately fled back out the window. She knocked another vampire off of me, which freed me enough to start defending myself. I turned around and crushed the neck of one who was attempting to drain me from my hind leg, decapitating him swiftly. After I killed that one, the one that Morgana was tussling with turned to ash almost instantly.

She was confused but righted herself to kill the remaining two vampires with me. I was feeling weak due to the blood loss; It didn't take them long to drain a substantial amount of my blood in that short amount of time. Morgana rushed to my side, pinning one of the remaining two up against a wall.

The other vampire released his bite on me and attempted to help his clan member, but I bit onto his leg just in time and dragged him away from her. She let out a primal growl before killing the vampire. She turned to assist me, but I was already finished killing it. She stayed in her form and looked out into the parking lot, inhaling deeply.

She shifted and said, "They're gone." She had two bite marks and several scratches on her body, and I whimpered seeing her injured. She got some towels from the bathroom to help me stop the bleeding. When vampires drink, they release some form of anticoagulant, making the blood flow more easily and preventing the body's natural clotting properties from working.

She instructed me to shift back so she could assess my wounds, and I did as she ordered. I had several bites around my femoral arteries on both legs, one on the brachial artery of my right arm, and one at the carotid artery of my neck. She applied tunicate-like pressure with the towels on the bites on my extremities and had me hold pressure to the bite on my neck.

Morg said, "Give it some time, and you should start clotting soon. I'm going to call my sister to see if she has any advice." She grabbed her cell phone and heard her talking with her sister. When she got off the phone, she said, "We need to get you some vitamin K1 and K2. It will help with clotting." I nodded, "Can we pick some up at a Walgreens or CVS?"

She checked her phone, "The Wall Street Market is the only place open now; they close at midnight, but they might have what we need." She put her clothes on and then helped me get my clothes over her makeshift bandages. She asked, "Can you walk on your own, or do you need me to help you?"

I responded, "I can make it if you grab the bags." She nodded and grabbed all of our belongings. I went to open the door for her, and we were met by a front desk clerk at our door. They asked, "Is everything okay in here?" Your neighbors called and said they heard a loud crashing sound.

Morgana apologized and said we would cover all the damages; just charge the card on file. We'll be back soon, she said as she pushed her way through, her suitcase in one hand, a few of my clothes under her arm, dragging me behind her with the other. I shut the door and nodded at the employee.

I could only imagine what they would think if they opened the door and saw the scene we left in there for them. Furniture turned about, and the massive bay window completely shattered. My blood was everywhere, and tufts of our fur were yanked out during the tussle, along with four decapitated bodies, a random arm, and a pile of ash.

The sunlight would take care of the bodies in the morning, that, or the vampires might send in a clean-up crew to prevent their own exposure. We didn't have time to worry about it right now. We needed to leave the area immediately, or the next group we ran into would definitely accomplish their assignment.

Morgana threw the items in the back and got in the driver's seat. I crawled into the passenger side, and she drove to the Wall Street Market. When we arrived, she got out and ordered me to wait in the car as she rushed into the store. She was in there for all of four minutes before she came back out waving a bag of medical supplies.

"You need to take 400 milligrams every 12 hours.", she said as she closed the door behind her. It looked like she had bought out the store. She added, "They only had vitamin K2." I looked at the bottles, 90 tablets, 100 micrograms each. "How much did you say I needed to take again?, I asked. She turned to me, "You weigh like 175 pounds, right?" I nodded. She said, "Then you need 400 milligrams every 12 hours."

I looked back down at the bottles. "You realize that I'd have to ingest about 45 of these bottles, right?" She had managed to get eight bottles of vitamin K2 and some water. She huffed, "That's everything that they had." I could tell that she was worried about me, so I started shoveling handfuls of the vitamins in my mouth, swallowing them down with the water.

She started driving again, heading north, and I took the opportunity to contact Alpha Draven. He was on the car's hands-free speaker. His voice boomed through the speaker, "What's the update, brother?" I responded, "We've been compromised; we were attacked, five confirmed dead, and one ran, but he was bitten, and his arm was torn off, so he should die within the hour."

My brother's voice was solemn, "Are you both okay?" Morgana spoke, "We're both alive, but we can't stay here; we won't survive if they get ahold of us again." She paused, "Beta Darius took the worst of it, but I called my sister, and we're following her medical advice." Alpha Draven paused momentarily, "I'm glad you're both okay. Where are you now?"

Morgana looked at the road signs as we passed them, "Still in Asheville, heading north." "I'd also expect to see a large charge on your credit card for the damages in the hotel room." She paused, and I took a moment to interject, "Can you let the car rental company know we had to make some changes to the reservation and that we'll drop it off when we get back in Michigan?"

Alpha Draven responded, "Of course, brother; keep me updated, and let me know if you need anything else." I said, "You've got it." Then, I ended the call. I turned to Morgana, "That was a close one, Morg. I don't want you to join us during the battle. I'll be too distracted with you there in harm's way." She scoffed at my request, "You're crazy if you think you're going and I'm not." We sat in silent disagreement for the next chunk of the drive.
