The drive to Vincenzo's house was a struggle for Maria. Many times throughout the drive, she had contemplated turning the car around and going back home. Maybe because her position in Vincenzo's life was hanging by a thread. 

Yes, they were more cordial recently even to the extent of flirting, but they were yet to discuss what they were. She wasn't quite sure if they were friends or just two people who happened to be tied by some thread of fate.
