บท 14: Braggart

I felt the ring connect to my consciousness. The magic circle faded into glitters in the air afterwards. After seeing this spectacle to its finish, I turned to the Count with question marks all over my face.

"Mutated magic circle?" I reiterated my unspoken question. The Count rubbed his chin in pensive thought.

"That is the only explanation for it. Mutated magic circles are quite rare. But in your case, it is a matter of course. Someone afflicted with the Equinox Flower disease is left with the lycoris mark. Be it in their skin or their magic circles. That is why no one is fond of the red spider lily. It signifies death and tragedy."

I pursed my lips at his explanation. Celestine's Equinox Flower disease was already healed but it seems the heaven's wanted to leave a mark on her. And ultimately, on me. Here I thought, I only had the lycoris mark on my chest. Looks like even my magic circle has it.

"I have both. In my skin and in my magic circle. What? Is it some kind of mark of death, huh? My Equinox Flower disease is no more though. So at this point, isn't it just that? A flower." I said flippantly whilst waving my hands.

"I will not argue with you. Take it as a reminder that mortals are not privy to the secrets of heaven. Changing fate is the work of gods. Going against that law merits a backlash, unless you reach divinity." Count Halcyon cautioned in a stern voice. Well, that much was expected. I won't be reckless again. I might suffer an even graver fate than being afflicted with Equinox Flower disease. I have no plans testing the might of divine lightning.

"I know grandpa. You should have a little faith in me though. Maybe I could attain divinity. After all, I'm already a Grand Magister at 18." I grinned cheekily. I have qualifications to be proud, alright. No one has ever attained the level of a Grand Magister at such a young age before.

In order for you to get my point, dear readers, I'd have to explain the levels of magic in this world. By the way, I learned this through Toni's memories so if you got questions refer to her please.

Kidding. Refer to the author.

On average, a person awakens their magic powers at the age of five and becomes an Illusionist. Through studies and practice, one advances into becoming an Enchanter and starts to craft his magic circle. Most Enchanters are at the age of 10 to 12. Once an enchanter is able to complete his magic circle, he becomes a Conjurer.

Conjurers learn about the elements and try to master them. A mastery of the elements is the distinguishing trait of an Elementalist. Being able to utilize the elements into different spells and combinations makes a Mage. Most commoners are at this level.

Great Mages in comparison are masters of spells and combinations along with the ability of creating their own spells. This is the basic requirement for graduation in most magic universities. And it has also become the defining line of potential and talents.

A Magister is basically someone who is able to manipulate a strand of natural law, weaving it into their spells. Being able to manipulate more than three strands would make a Grand Magister.

People who attain this level are renowned personas within the empire. But one must note that these people are mostly in their mid and late-twenties. The youngest holder of the Grand Magister title so far was actually the male lead, Carlisle von Trier, my very own brother. Though, it would be taken by the female lead a few months from now.

Little did they know, there was someone even younger who couldn't be bothered.

Yes. I was referring to myself. I'm a braggart But I'm gonna brag only to significant people. For example, this Magi in front of me with the name of Old Man Hal.

As for someone who is able to create laws within their domains using the strands of natural laws that they are able to manipulate is a true blue Magi. Magis are considered experts among experts. People who have achieved this level are respected at the level of the emperor. After all, anyone who achieves this is a one in a hundred year genius. They hold power capable of dictating the progress of an empire. And Old Man Hal was one of those experts among experts.

As for the level beyond that, it has been thousands of years since someone has attained it. And if there ever was someone who did, their identities have long been hidden in the pages of history. Which was why there was a saying for the last two levels.

[He who is one with nature holds command over it. It is he who shall be the Grand Magi.

He who is one with heaven holds command over fate. It is he who shall be the Divine Magi.]

Poetic? Yeah, I guess. Not that I care. It does sound interesting though. After all, the further one goes with magic the longer the lifespan. Achieving Divine Magi level might just net me an eternal life. So the effort would be totally worth it.

I reveled in the praising look of my Grandfather.

"You are already a Grand Magister? How did this happen? How many strands of law can you manipulate?" Count Halcyon asked with an undeniable pride and excitement. Yep. We both know I was a freaking prodigy.

"The spell paved the way for me to be able to touch upon multitudes of laws. I can manipulate about 30 strands for now." I answered with a grin.
