บท 19: Chapter 17: A Newly Hired Coach
~ Sophie's Point of View ~
"Sophie! Sophie! It's time to get up now and take a quick bath!"
I rubbed my eyes as I heard a loud noise coming from the door. I slowly sit back and have some stretching. "Woooah!"
"Sophie! I'll wait for you in the living room." I heard Dad told me.
I get up from the bed and replied, "I'll be quick, Dad!"
"Your mother cooked breakfast, you can eat first before going to school."
I suddenly remembered last night. The pain, hatred, and bitterness. "I'm fine, Dad! I'll eat at the school's cafeteria, later."
I don't have still the gut to face and talk to Mom. Although I told her what I feel still, I felt guilty for shouting and talking with her with our respect.
Dad didn't reply and so, I took a very quick bath.
As time passes by, I slowly learned how to take a bath, how to brush my teeth despite my disability.
I don't want to be a burden to my parents because I know I can surpass all these obstacles, alone and humble.
"Come on, Sophie! You're getting late with your practice!"
I hurriedly wear my shoes and tied the lace-up and replied, "I'm coming, Dad!"
"Give me your backpack." Dad helped me through the way to the garage and guided me to get into the car.
I am wondering why Dad suddenly volunteered to send me into school. "Dad?"
"Wear your seatbelt, Sophie. We're heading out now." Daddy didn't answer my question.
Perhaps, he doesn't want to talk about what happened last night. Well, I feel the same way too.
I felt so guilty and culpable for doing it. But, I can't bring back the time anymore and choose to be quiet, and that sits back.
I gasped and asks him, "Where's Mom, Dad?"
"Don't mind her anymore. I've talked to her last night, and forget about what I've told you, yesterday."
Daddy looked at me at the side mirror. He seems serious and guilty. I don't know, but Daddy acting odd lately.
I played with my fingers and replied, "Umm. I'm sorry for everything I said, I didn't mean to hurt you and Mom. Please, forg–"
"Ivy and I are the ones who needs to say sorry to you, Sophie. You're right, that we didn't do our responsibility and our best as a parent. I am really sorry for giving you such a miserable and bleak life, Sophie."
I shook my head and smiled bitterly.
How can I tell them that I am still thankful that I have them as my parents? How can I tell that I love them both?
"I lo–" I don't have the chance to say it when Daddy stopped the engine.
"We're here!"
I hurriedly went off, carrying my bag but Dad insisted to carry it. He's acting really strange.
"Soooophie! I thought you will not come to practice!"
Out of nowhere, Kate called me. She was breathing deeply, obviously that she was running. "Tito, I'll accompany Sophie into our room, it is okay with you?"
Daddy burst into a loud laugh and said, "Of course! Also, I want to thank you for treating Sophie yesterday. She was too glad about it."
I'm doomed. I didn't know that Dad will open up about my lies.
"Pardon?" Kate said.
But before they know my lies, I said cheerfully, "Goodbye Dad! Thank you for sending me today!"
"Oh! See you then, Kate and Sophie, please take care of yourself. Alright?"
I shook my head and smiled sweetly to Dad.
"Please Dad, drive slowly and bring the car to the repair shop!"
I sighed of relief and solace. I hope Dad will do what I've told him.
Kate grasps my arm and said, "You lied to your Dad?"
I looked away although I can't see her face and I keep my mouth shut.
She tightens her grasp that makes me stiffened and steps back. "Please, talk to me, Sophie. Please."
"Forget about it, Kate! I don't want to discuss it anymore."
I wanted to be alone. I wanted to walk by my self but, I can be alone seeing nothing but darkness.
Kate clutched her arm around mine and said enthusiastically as if nothing happened.
"Hold on to me, then!"
Since I don't want to argue with her, I let her do everything she wanted to do so. I couldn't bear losing my one and only friend because of Yna's illusions and desperate tactics.
"Sophie, the contest is on the first day of July. Aren't you excited?"
I halted from walking and replied, "I don't know! I felt not doing it anymore and just back out of the competition."
"What? Why? I mean, why would you think to back out, Sophie?! For pete's sake, it's your long time dream!"
In the first place, Dad and Mom are both right. That I don't have the right and the opportunity to reach my dreams.
To be in a popular and promising University. To be a top star and to be one of those outstanding singers in the Philippines or even abroad.
At least I reached one of my goals despite being a blind person.
"I'm just kidding! You are too serious lately, Kate."
"Oh! I thought you will actually not going to participate in the singing contest. Nevertheless, I'm glad that you will not be going to withdraw from it."
Kate acts as a professional artist. When she's with me, she would burst into laugh even in small stuff like watching an ant carrying food.
Most of the time, she can easily appreciate everything that surrounds her. Moon, the starry night, color and vivid sunset, and most of all, the butterfly.
Before I met her, I thought I would be alone for the rest of my high school days. That is no one will dare to be friends with me because I am only an ordinary student.
Not like Yna and her friends, wealthy, popular, gorgeous, and talented. Although she doesn't possess a good and kind heart, still, most of the juniors idolized and admired Yna.
"We're here, Sophie! We just arrived at the right time." She mumbled.
I wonder why, and so I asked Kate what's the matter, "What do you mean by 'we arrived at the right time?"
"Your new coach is here, who's next to us. Wooah! He's handsome, Sophie!"
New coach? How come that I didn't know about it.
"Shut up, Kate."
I tried to reach into my sit when Kate mumbled, "Good morning, I'm Kate and you are Mr...–"
I know that she wants and interest to know his name. Such a stubborn high school girl.
"Good morning too! Oh! I'm Max and nice to meet you, Kate."
At that moment, I was startled and stumbled when I hear his voice.
