Truly, it was surprising that even Dumbledore had not luxuriously employed a phoenix as a mail carrier, yet a young wizard was willing to do so.
"What did you buy this time?" Cedric asked curiously from two seats away.
"Just a few books," Wayne replied casually.
As he opened the package, it confirmed his words—there were indeed only three books inside.
"An In-depth Explanation of Ancient Runes"
"Ancient Runes Comparative Dictionary"
"How to Use a Dictionary"
"Runes?" A senior student exclaimed in surprise. "Wayne, you can't take that elective until your third year! It's too early for you to be buying those now."
Runes, also known as Ancient Magical Scripts, was a type of character with magical properties. Before spells had definite forms and standards, many wizards used runes to cast spells, and some Muggles obtained information about runes to deceive others as charlatans.
After the third year at Hogwarts, students could choose this elective. However, very few people pursued it. Even if one took the elective on Ancient Runes, they would likely abandon it after the OWLs in their fifth year because it was too challenging and not often applicable.
"I have a bit of interest in this area," Wayne replied simply. "I can check it out in the History of Magic class; at least it'll keep me awake."
Laughter erupted around him, and the senior who had asked earlier looked somewhat speechless, saying, "The Sorting Hat must have malfunctioned; you should have been placed in Ravenclaw."
"Nonsense!" Wayne replied earnestly, glaring at the three sandwiches on his plate. "No one is more deserving of being in Hufflepuff than I am."
The senior stopped speaking and simply gave a thumbs up.
Wayne put the books away, then suddenly felt someone was watching him.
He looked up to see Professor Sprout, Professor Flitwick, and even Quirrell at the main table all staring at him.
Noticing that Wayne had caught on, Quirrell quickly turned his gaze downward to focus on his breakfast, while the other two professors showed no signs of discretion; they even smiled kindly at Wayne.
But Wayne felt a shiver run down his spine.
What was going on with those two…?
It wasn't until after the Charms class that Wayne was once again kept behind by the professor, that he understood the source of the issue.
"Lawrence," Flitwick said kindly, looking up at him. "I heard from Minerva that you performed six transformations yesterday."
"Today, I'd like to get a better sense of your abilities as well…"
"Such conditions."
"As long as you satisfy me, you won't need to do any assignments for this year's magic course."
